Kitty and Billy Backdated
Kitty and Billy finally sit down to talk after her infiltration of the Brotherhood base.
Billy made his way up to the gazebo, his backpack slung over his shoulder and the contents inside making a weird crackly sound. He squinted against the light, seeing a slim figure already under the shade of the gazebo's roof and he smiled knowing who it was.
"Kitty!" He called as he made his way closer.
Kitty looked up and waved a little, closing her laptop and setting it beside her on the bench. "Hey, Billy."
He moved inside the gazebo and quickly sat in front of her, taking his back pack off to set it aside. He glanced at her for a moment, wanting to ask right away, but instead opened his bag to dig through it.
"Here, I brought offerings." He pulled out a plastic container filled with chocolate chip cookies, a two liter of milk and two plastic solo cups.
“Wow,” she blinked, taking the carton of cookies. “You know the way into my heart.”
"I try." Billy remarked with a small smile and went about getting everything ready so they could eat their cookies with milk. He kept quiet while he poured the milk, handing her one and taking one for himself before sitting back and taking a small sip. "So...what’s going on?"
"You're the one who asked me here, remember?" Kitty pointed out.
"Yeah, fair point." He picked up a cookie, but didn't eat it and instead just stared down at it."I heard about the tracker and you infiltrating the Brotherhood's base...alone."
He paused and glanced up at her. "I guess I'm trying ask if you're okay. Cause that seems like a lot."
Kitty sighed. It was inevitable that people would find out. “It was stupid of me.”
Billy wasn't going to say anything about that, considering she had probably already heard it from others a lot by now. "Did you get anything you were hoping to get from it?"
She huffed a little. "Yes. More than I was hoping too. More than I needed to. More than I ever really needed to know."
"Like what?" He asked quietly, breaking his cookie in half.
Kitty tilted her head to look at him. "I don't really want to put that on you. Especially not if you're not joining the X-Men."
"Ah, so are you joining then?" He had kinda figured she would, but he didn't want to assume.
Kitty nodded a little. “Yeah, I am.”
Billy nodded at that answer, not really surprised. "Can I ask why?"
"Because," she sighed as she dunked a cookie in some milk, "there are a lot of people out there that want to hurt mutants, and I never realized just how bad it was. I want to make sure I can keep other innocent mutants safe. Or as safe as possible."
"And... you aren't worried that Xavier is just doing this, so he can get back at that guy he was talking about?" Billy really tried to ignore the fact that his mind immediately went to the word asshole for the Brotherhood’s leader.
“Of course I am. But we don’t have to follow the Professor’s instructions if we don’t think it’s right,” Kitty told him.
Billy bit at his bottom lip at her answer and nodded. "I guess you're right. So, what, then would you just refuse and leave or would you try to stay and figure it out?"
He shook his head quickly. "I'm sorry. I'm asking a bunch of questions that I know you don't have an answer for right now." He rubbed at his eyes and sighed, then gave her a concerned look. "Besides...all that...are you okay? Anything you can tell me about that bugging you?"
Kitty stared down at her half-eaten cookie. "I found out what happened to Tommy in that mutant experiment lab."
Billy froze mid-chew, then forced himself to finish and swallowed before placing his cookie down in his lap. Well, shit. He thought and glanced out at the scenery for a moment, then turned back to her. "Like medical records and everything?"
"If you can call them that," Kitty agreed softly. "Yes. He was...he was one of the lucky ones, Billy. They killed almost thirty mutants in those labs."
Billy no longer felt hungry in the slightest, the idea that Tommy could have easily been one of those mutants made him feel sick...and angry. He clenched his hand and told himself that he needed to cool it, this wasn't the time or the place to get angry, so he took a deep breath. "Tommy destroyed the lab, right?"
Kitty nodded. "It's gone. But that doesn't mean that the people who did this are. Tommy's lab was the second one. The Brotherhood had already destroyed the first. So they could be setting up shop anywhere. And, oh god, I don't mean to scare you, Billy."
Billy quickly shook his head and reached out to touch her hand to assure her. "No, no. Kitty, don't worry, I'm not scared. I'm more...angry."
His lips thinned as he tried to think of the best way to explain his anger, but then again she would understand. "The fact that they touched him at all, any of them actually makes me just....think bad things."
"Me too," Kitty sighed. And Billy hadn't even seen what they'd done. "Which is why I'm joining the X-Men."
Billy nodded, understanding her drive to join and if it meant bringing the guys who did that to Tommy down, he was half tempted to sign up right now. Billy tapped at the edge of his glass with his finger for a moment, he needed to talk to Tommy and see what his brother felt. "I guess I'm just not sure what we would be doing. Would we actually be fighting people or doing more gathering information and destroying labs?"
He knew Kitty didn't have those answers, that was all on Xavier to figure out.
"Maybe all of it," Kitty told him. "Or maybe you can decide what you want to do personally."
"Maybe. Hmm..." Billy hummed in thought, then he smiled a little as he glanced up at her. "Do you know how to fight? Cause I sure as hell don't."
"No, but I assume there will be training?" Kitty suggested.
"Let's hope so." Billy replied, grabbing his glass and taking a long drink. He set it down and thought for a moment about what he wanted to say. "Tommy told me that he let you in on the big family secret."
Kitty took a deep breath at that. "Yeah. That. I know about that."
"And that we probably shouldn't tell her that we are," He kind of waved his hands in the air at a half-assed attempt to seem mystic. "Her reincarnated kids from the future."
Every time he said it he wanted to check to make sure this was real life.
"Well, that's my thought, anyway," Kitty agreed, quirking a half-smile.
At her small little smile Billy felt a little bit better and laid down on the ground to stare up at the wood ceiling of the gazebo with a sigh. "But what if us telling her make her want to have kids? Okay, I know that sounds like I'm bragging, but what if that's our purpose here?"
That sounded like a lame ass purpose, but you never knew.
Kitty raised an eyebrow. "It sounds like your purpose is making up excuses to be able to talk to your mom."
Billy turned his head so he was facing her and raised an eyebrow. "Hey, I don't call you out on the obvious. But...yeah okay, I would like to talk to her. I mean, she sounds exactly like me power wise and stuff. Wouldn't it be a lost chance at...something if we didn't try?"
Kitty shook her head. “I can’t judge you, Billy. Not after what I did. If you want to talk to her, you should.”
Billy bit at his bottom lip for a second and reached out to tug on her shoelace. "You don't think it will open a time paradox and kill us all?"
He was only half joking.
“Well, Illyana’s lived whole days twice over, so what do I know about time travel?” Kitty quirked a little smile.
"She has?" That was something he hadn't heard, and he sat up on his elbows to look at Kitty better. "Like with her disks and Limbo?"
Kitty nodded. "It's a side effect of her teleportation. Or a side power? Something like that."
"Huh." Billy nodded even though he didn't really understand. "Speaking of Illyana, you guys are doing okay now, right?"
She waggled her hand back and forth. "We're talking, at least. She's still angry at me for going behind her back."
Billy shrugged with a small wince. "I mean, yeah, that's fair. But I glad you guys are talking, you're her best friend. I think she was pretty lost without you."
Kitty frowned. "I think Pyro is the one she leans on now, but if that's what she wants, I'm not going to stand in the way."
"Kitty..." Billy reached out and tugged on one of her hands. "I'll lean on you if you want. I'll lean everything on you until you go insane and phase me to the center of the earth."
She stared at him for a moment, then laughed softly, leaning in to ruffle at his hair. "Thanks. But uh, no thanks?"
Billy narrowed his eyes and playfully batted at her hand in his hair. "Don't mess with my hair like that, I'm older than you. Dumber, but older." He smiled and sat up, reaching out to pick up his cup. "Thank you for talking with me, Kitty. I think I was going to explode if I didn't tell someone other than Tommy."
She smiled softly. “Anytime. You know you can talk to me, right? I mean, I may be younger, but we share Star Wars.”
Billy placed a hand over his heart and tried to be extra serious. "The bond that can never be broken."
Billy made his way up to the gazebo, his backpack slung over his shoulder and the contents inside making a weird crackly sound. He squinted against the light, seeing a slim figure already under the shade of the gazebo's roof and he smiled knowing who it was.
