Tamara goes to confront Billy about what happened with Teddy and things get heated.
Tamara marched towards the boy’s dorm with purpose, backpack in her arms (not like she could wear it with wings). She’d just been talking with Teddy, up until he unceremoniously fled the damn room at the mere suggestion of seeing Billy. What the hell had happened to these two?
Well, technically she knew, but it was still a bunch of bull. And right now, she was like 90% sure it was Billy’s fault.
She knocked sharply on his door, face set in an angry-but-determined expression.
Billy looked up at the sound of the knock on his door, knowing it had to be Tamara because he wasn't expecting anyone else. He glanced for a moment over at the still unmade bed on Teddy's side and frowned at how much it screamed that Teddy hadn't been back.
Stop it.
Billy got up from his chair and crossed the room to open the door, coming face to face with an angry Tamara. "Ahh...Hey Tamara. What's up?"
“We need to talk,” she informed him in no uncertain terms. “Can I come in?” It was barely a question - if he said no, he was gonna find himself having a really awkward conversation in the hallway.
"Umm...sure." Billy stepped aside so she could come in and wondered what exactly she needed to talk to him about that made her look so mad. Oh god, what if something about calling her Tommy's girlfriend and she was here to kill him. Billy closed the door behind her a little warily and watched her. "So, what's up?"
Tamara stepped inside and dropped her bag on the ground, so she could cross her arms over her chest, wings flaring behind her. "Teddy."
Any good feelings or thoughts Billy had about this encounter flew right out the window and he immediately started thinking of ways to escape whatever this was going to be. "Teddy? What about Teddy?"
“He thinks you hate him,” Tamara paraphrased, not wasting any time in getting to her point. “How could you be such a jerk when he came out to you!”
"I don't-" Billy cut himself off when she kept going and sighed as he slumped back down in his computer chair. He resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose, taking a deep breath and meeting her gaze. "So, I'm guessing you talked to Teddy. Look, things...the whole thing was a mess and I said things I shouldn't have, you're right, but he lied to me. Multiple times when I was nothing but honest."
“Yeah. He was scared,” Tamara snapped back, not letting up one bit. “And when he did tell you the truth, you EMP-blasted the school! Way to make him feel safe and accepted. What the hell were you thinking?”
"So, lying is okay now?" Billy snapped, his gaze hardening into a glare as he watched her. He told himself that he needed to calm down, Tamara wasn't even a part of this and was just going on what Teddy had told her, which was apparently that Billy was the villain here. "I know he was scared, Tamara. I know that, but after everything I've told him-"
Billy scowled a little and thought about how he'd told Teddy pretty much everything freely. Being gay, what happened in Limbo, the fear of his powers...
“Ohmygod, Billy, we’re not five years old, it’s more complicated than that!” Tamara was kinda shocked - how could he be so clueless?? “You don’t get to decide when someone else feels safe enough to trust you — that’s kind of a them decision.” She only narrowly avoided adding idiot to the end of that sentence.
There. There it was.
The idea that Teddy hadn't trusted him, didn't trust him until Billy had literally forced him into the corner because of the kiss and that had been the only reason Teddy had come forward. Billy grit his teeth as he tried to forget the pain of that, but Tamara was making it so fucking hard. "God, I get it." He bit out, doing his best to keep his anger in check. "I did bad and hurt Teddy, that what you want me to say right? That he did nothing wrong and it's all on me. Me. Is that it? Is that what you want to hear me say?"
“Christ, no wonder he didn’t want to tell you - quit being such a prick!” Tamara’s hands sparked as they clenched into fists at her side, but she didn’t try to contain it. Billy, of all people, could deal. “Don’t you think this is exactly why he didn’t want to tell you? He’s out there, totally falling apart because he’s so sorry that he hurt you. Don’t you feel even a little bit bad about that?”
"What do you know about anything!" Billy yelled as he stood up quickly and moved towards her, seeing the sparks around her making him feel free to push a little. His hands weren't starting to spark, but he could feel the small tugging sensation in his stomach that also preceded his magic. "You don't know shit about my relationship with him. You think cause you talked with him for a little you know everything? Well, you don't. Of course I feel bad about it! Who wouldn't? But the last thing I need is someone coming into my room to yell at me and tell me how much of a fucking dick head I am! NEWS FLASH Tamara! I already know!"
There was half an instant of fear as Billy came at her, but rage covered it just as quickly. Her wings flared, and she jabbed his chest with one sparking finger, glaring up at him fearlessly. “So fix it,” she snapped, voice quiet in a kill-you-slowly kind of way. “You guys are crazy about each other!! You want him to trust you, give him a damn reason to!”
Billy jerked back as if burned, not by her sparks, but by her words and immediately tried to figure out how to get her out.
"Stop." He whispered roughly trying not to let what she said get to him. Billy was crazy about Teddy, but Teddy had been scared shitless of the kiss and he had tried to sneak out that morning, why would he- why would he- "That's not funny."
Tamara was undaunted. “I’m. Not. Laughing.”
Billy ran his hands through his hair a few times, making it look even worse than it had and moved back over to his chair. He didn't want to talk about this anymore. "Tamara, you don't know what you're talking about."
“Says who?” Tamara had no intention of backing down, and kept glaring. No way he was going to just write her out of this conversation. “I just came from talking with Teddy, and I know plenty about being supportive.” As a matter of fact, “If anyone here had treated you that way, they wouldn’t even be getting the courtesy of being yelled at - just a shock they wouldn’t forget.”
"No." Billy sighed. "That's not what I meant. Teddy...doesn't like me. Not like that."
“What? Yes, he does!” Holy crap, these two were hopeless.
"Tamara...I kissed him." Billy gulped as he remembered. "I kissed him and after he looked so scared."
Tamara’s eyebrows shot up. Teddy hadn’t mentioned that part. “But he said— Wait, was this before or after he told you he’s gay?”
"Before." Billy admitted quietly. "Then he tried to sneak out in the morning, but I caught him and then he started talking about how it wasn't boys kissing him that was the problem and ugh..."
Tamara huffed, but tucked her wings to her back. Teddy really was chicken, Jesus... “So he freaked out.” She frowned for a moment, then blinked as the pieces slowly started moving into place. “Wait, you called him on it and then he told you?”
"Called him on sneaking out? Yeah. Except I more just asked where he was going when I knew he didn't have class for another few hours." Since they didn't seem like they were going to fight anymore Billy slipped back into his chair and deflated.
"Look, Billy, he flat-out told me he's not ready to be out. He went through some shit at his last school after he got outed." Even Billy had to get how that'd mess with a person, right? Tamara frowned at him. "He only admitted it to me because I already knew."
Billy froze at her words, staring at the small brunt DS on his desk that he had been trying his hardest to bring back to life because it belonged to Teddy.
"He was outed?" He asked quietly, suddenly feeling the urge to electrocute someone he had never met before.
"Yeah. At one of those creepy Christian schools, like I went to." Tamara knew it wasn't really her story to tell, but, well, Billy finally seemed to be getting it. "I don't know any more than that, but I guess that's why he was so scared of being out here. Know," she added, with an extremely pointed look, "wasn't sure he could trust people."
Billy continued to stare at the DS for a while longer until he pressed his thumbs to his eyes and applied pressure until it started to hurt. Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit. He'd forced him. He'd forced Teddy to admit something personal before he was ready, they fought and Billy had thrown those words at him about courage.
Billy stopped pressing when it the pain become intolerable and dropped his arms to his sides, his cast knocking against the arm rest quietly. "How am I supposed to fix this?"
How did he get his friend back?
Tamara blinked, kind of shocked that he'd ask her advice after all the yelling. "Talking to him?" That was pretty obvious, right? "Without making him feel like shit, if you can manage it." Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh, and she rolled her eyes. "Look, this really shouldn't be too hard - get in the same room, apologize, then get to kissing each other stupid already."
Billy flinched a little at her wording. "I don't think that's something that's going to happen, but I can apologize. Hell, I can grovel if he needs me to."
Billy tried to think of the best way to even get Teddy to talk to him again, since the guy had been hiding out in Nick's room next door for the past two nights. Teddy probably thought Billy didn't know, but he could hear the other through the wall at night.
"How would you like to be said sorry to, Tamara?"
"Huh? I don't know." Honestly, Tamara didn't have much experience with apologies. But she frowned, thinking about it. How would she want her crush to apologize to her? "He's like, terrified of making you angry again, so maybe start by telling him you're not?"
He gave Tamara a look that said 'duh', but quickly stopped when he remembered who exactly he was talking to and knew he'd be hit for it. "Okay, but I shorted out one of his favorite things." He nodded towards Teddy's DS. "I don't think just a sorry is going to cut it."
Tamara gave him a flat look. "I don't think that's the problem. Maybe take back calling him a coward first?"
Billy visibly flinched and tugged on the hem of his shirt. "He told you that? How much exactly did he tell you?"
"Enough," she replied flatly, because actually detailing their conversation felt like too much. She crossed her arms over her chest, giving Billy another glare. "Basically, he wanted to explain to you, but you lost your shit and blew out the power."
He opened his mouth but then immediately closed it, knowing that trying to defend himself to Tamara even the slightest bit would get him nowhere. She had someone she was fighting for and wasn't going to budge on it. "Okay, I'm going to apologize."
How, he wasn't sure, but at least he hoped that satisfied Tamara.
Tamara nodded. “Good. And he thinks he’s ruined any chance with you, so maybe fix that.” Because no way all hope was lost there. They were too damn cute.
Billy frowned a bit. "Yeah...I'll be sure to do that." He thought about everything he knew about Teddy. "Are flowers too much?"
Well that melted Tamara, and suddenly she was grinning at Billy. "Probably not - does he like flowers?"
Tamara marched towards the boy’s dorm with purpose, backpack in her arms (not like she could wear it with wings). She’d just been talking with Teddy, up until he unceremoniously fled the damn room at the mere suggestion of seeing Billy. What the hell had happened to these two?
