Wynonna really needs to stop pulling her gun on her new classmates. Luckily, Billy doesn’t seem to mind too much.
Billy frowned as he sat cross legged on the grass, far enough out that he wouldnt run into too many people while trying to figure out this whole levitating flying thing. "Come on, Kaplan. Just focus."
He closed his eyes again and tried to focus on just floating, trying not to lose his train of thought when he felt his legs and butt lift up off the ground. Okay. Now focus on going a little higher and for longer.
Wynonna meanwhile had decided that she should probably start working on the fact that her gun, for all of its magic abilities, did not seem to shoot straight. She had to go old school, just like her daddy taught...well, not her, but Willa. Wynonna took some cans she had collected and found a piece of land as far from other people as she could find. She set up the cans in a line, walked tens paces away, and took a deep breath.
"C'mon Peacemaker," Wynonna muttered, waiting for the gun to materialize in her hand. It took a second, but once it did she lined up a shot, and pulled her trigger.
"Damn it!"
Billy jerked when he heard a loud bang sound that sounded frighteningly like a gun shot, and immediately lost his concentration and fell to the ground with a dull thud. He glanced around and tried to find the source of the loud sound, the echo making it a bit hard to figure out exactly where it had come from.
He waited and when he heard it again he quickly got up and headed towards the sound, not even thinking that he could possibly be walking right onto a shooting zone. He finally found the source when he noticed a young dark haired girl pointing a gun at some cans.
"Hello?" He called out, making sure to stay a safe distance away and hoping he wouldn't spoil her so she would turn and shoot.
Wynonna jumped, turning around with Peacemaker still in her hand. When the glowing started and she was faced with a teenage boy, Wynonna slowly lowered her weapon. "Jeez kid, anyone ever tell you not to go near someone with a gun?"
Billy immediately held up his hands in defense, not really sure what the would have done against what looked like glowing bullets, but it was instinct and he took a cautionary step back as well. "Uhh, well not in those exact words. Don't touch a gun, yes. Don't fight someone with a gun, sure. But not that other one."
Billy glanced around her to see the cans lined up and smiled as he slowly lowered his arms. "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt target practice."
Quick with responses. Wynonna liked it. Shrugging, Wynonna responded, "Shockingly they don't really have a ready to go shooting range at my disposal. Guns in a school and all that."
Billy huffed a soft laugh and nodded looking down at the gun in her hand. "Yeah. It's kinda a big thing. So, why are the bullets glowing?"
"It's not the bullets, more the...," Wynonna gestured around, blanking on the word barrel for a moment, before settling for, "gun. And I don't know, it's how it came to me."
"It came to you? Are we talking like an Excalibur thing or more like it was given to you?" Billy got a better look at her gun and guessed it looked like a nice gun. He had only ever seen one on TV or Andy had gotten lost and the police were asked to help. "Either way it looks pretty cool."
"Once I got my powers it just kind of shows up when I want it," Wynonna explained with a shrug. "It knows if someones mutant or not."
"So...it's like a metal detector, but for mutants?" He looked at the gun again and wondered how exactly that worked, did she have to shoot someone for it to know?
Huh, Wynonna had never thought about it like that. "Yeah, the glowy thing? Means I'm aiming at a mutant. Watch." Wynonna took aim at a can lined up, no glowing present, and fired.
She was off by about a mile, but hey the point was made.
Billy made an impressed noise and turned to look over at the cans she had tried to shoot at. "So...how long have you had it for?"
He wondered silently and held his hand up in the shape of a gun, squinting to make sure he had a can lined up with his finger. He tried his best to focus on that one can and gathering everything he could into his finger.
A small spark shot out from his finger, but died quickly before it ever reached the can. "Damn."
"Since I manifested--what's up with your finger?" Wynonna answered, distracted by the sparks.
"Oh. It's my thing. I can kind of control electricity, I say kind of cause I'm not too good at really controlling how much or how little I can actually generate." He wiggled his fingers, a few sparks spitting out before dying down completely. "Oh, I'm Billy by the way."
"Wynonna," She answered back, eying him curiously. "So you out here to practice too then?" She was sweating balls and figured most people wouldn't be out if they could help it.
"Yeah. I'm too nervous to practice inside and outside seemed less crowded. Well, mostly." He smiled and then wiped at his forehead, not really prepared for the outdoors in his t-shirt and jeans. "I'm sorry. I'll leave you alone to practice. I just wanted to see what the noise was."
This kid seemed nice. A little too shy and kind for her taste, but nice. "It's all good. Your practicing going any better than mine?"
"Ha!" Billy immediately clamped his mouth shut after the sarcastic laugh broke out, not meaning to let the bitterness out. He winced a little and gave a small shrug. "Sorry. To be honest, I'm really sucking at this."
"Welcome to the suckage club. We have t-shirts," Wynonna told him sarcastically. "Don't worry about it kid. Pretty sure if we were experts we wouldn't be here."
"Well, that's probably true." He grinned glad to know he wasn't the only one in this school who didn't seem to be a complete master of their powers. "When did your powers manifest?"
"A few years ago--when I was 12," Wynonna immediately tried to brush past the subject. “You?"
"Wow. So for a while." He gave a helpless shrug before answering her a little quietly. "About a month? I was with someone and I got upset, then suddenly- woosh - electric powers ahoy."
"Yeah--its not like they give you an instruction manual with this kind of thing," Wynonna joked. This kid was too pure. He was kind of adorable--who even said ahoy?
"Well, that sure would have been handy before I destroyed my parents blender. Even a small little pamphlet would have been nice." He tried to let only the sarcasm and none of the bitterness into his voice when he said that, taking a cleansing deep breath and letting it out.
"So, can I see you shoot it?"
Wynonna chuckled. She pulled out Peacemaker and tried to line up a clean shot.Without the glowing or magic or whatever that happened with a mutant target, it almost seemed like Peacemaker was over it.
When she pulled the trigger, she clipped the tree behind the cans, but didn't make a dent in the line up. "Dammit. Well, its a good thing I'm not a cop, huh?"
"Eh, if we are basing this off movies, cops are pretty bad shots." He suddenly wished that he knew remotely anything about guns so he could maybe help, but all he knew about them was there was something called a barrel and that they made a loud sound when the trigger was pulled.
"Maybe we could attach a tiny laser to the top. You could become the first real sniper pistol user."
"I don't think Peacemaker would like that very much," Wynonna chuckled at the mental image.
"Are you telling me the gun has a mind of its own? Like Kitt from Nightrider?" Billy looked at the gun again a little warily.
"Sort of? Honestly, I try not to think too much on it," Wynonna shrugged. After all, if she thought about it, she'd think about the attack on the Homestead. Nooooo thank youuuuuuu.
She'd rather stick to straight forward ignorance.
"That's probably for the best to be honest." The idea of a gun having a mind of it's own was a little too much for him and he went to school in a mansion with kids who had superpowers. "So, how are you liking it here? Have to be honest, it's taking a little bit of adjusting for me."
"Well, so long as I ignore the whole 'school part'...so far, not too bad," she responded cautiously. She didn't want to jinx herself. It was like her family was cursed, in that aspect. "The humidity makes me feel like I'm living in a sweaty dude's armpit, which I could do without."
"Ha. That's a disgusting image, so thanks for that." Billy looked at the cans again and frowned. "Would it be better to use an actual target? That way you can tell how far from the bulls eyes you are so you can make adjustments?"
"Are you offering yourself up for target practice?" Wynonna joked with a half grin.
"Hey. If you shoot me now, I could at least say I had a good run with this school, short but still good." He grinned widely at her.
"That's the spirit!" Wynonna cheered with a smirk. This kid wasn't too bad.
Billy laughed and decicded to stay and watch her practice for a little while longer, the girl was fun.
