Detective Pikachu leads to new career avenues for our two Best Roommates!
Jester and Nott wasted no time getting out to see Detective Pikachu when it came to the movie theaters. Jester had played the games (though she hadn't had many people to play with), and even though Nott hadn't had so many fancy toys and games herself, she did sort of remember the cartoons. It didn't really matter - the trailers had promised them the antics of super cute anime critters brought to live action, the endearing Ryan Reynolds making snarky remarks as Pikachu, and even a detective story! Both Nott and Jester had always enjoyed a good detective story, as it turned out - Nancy Drew, Scooby Doo, the Clue movie... Now that they'd figured out they could get to and from the mall, which conveniently had its own movie theater - how could they not?
Strapping on their image inducers and taking the bus, they babbled happily all the way to the mall about 'hey do you remember that one mystery where?' And after an hour and forty-five minutes of amnesiac, coffee-addicted Pikachu and twenty-one-year-old insurance salesman human Tim Goodman teaming up to find out what REALLY happened to Tim's estranged dad/Pikachu's human partner in Ryme City, they came away not only entertained and high on sugar, but also completely convinced that THEY could have solved the mystery so much faster.
"I can feel it in my jellies," Nott sighed in quote of Pikachu's detective-sense as they stepped off the bus, back on the road just outside the school. "We saw all of that coming from a mile away, right? We could totally be detectives."
"We saw it all coming!" Jester confirmed excitedly. "From miles away! We are the smartest, Nott. It is true." She nodded enthusiastically along with her own words. "We could be the smartest detectives. We could solve cases! It wouldn't take us very long at all, I'm sure." She dropped her voice to sound rougher and tougher, like a proper Hollywood action movie star. "No case could resist us."
Nott-under-hologram grinned at Jester's Action Star voice and the maybe slight exaggeration of their detecting capabilities. Still, they both really did love a good whodunit or plot-twisty caper. "Absolutely," she played along. "It's just too bad we're m- AH, I mean, too bad we're completely normal, boring kids who go to a completely normal, boring high school. No cases to solve around here."
"There could be and we don't even know!" Jester protested. Mutant school; things were bound to happen there. Things that could be cases! Cases that could be closed! "It's not like they would tell us about their cases. Maybe if we advertised!"
"Do you think so?" Would a bunch of weirdo kids really have reasons to hire detectives? Nott wasn't convinced, but Jester had made a good point that no one would tell them they had a job for a detective unless they realized they had detectives under their very own roof. (...Rooves?)
"I guess we could... Make a post to the blogs, or print flyers or something? But you're the expert at all that," Nott realized with excitement. "You're such a good artist, and you do that kind of thing with your pamphlets for the Traveler already!"
"I can draw and design something for us, too!" Jester agreed, clapping happily. She spread her hands wide as she announced, "Jester and Nott's detective agency! Something quirky and fun but without unicorns and glitter," she added with a glance at her friend. She took Nott's desires very seriously, okay. That was what being friends was about!
"We don't want people to confuse our business with Gilmore's," Nott added as she glanced back, relieved that not everything they shared had to be contaminated with unicorns and glitter. She was very lucky to have her friend, but that was Jester's style more than hers. (...Did she have a style?) "And if people are going to trust us with very serious, important cases, we need to look professional. Do you think I can get one of those, what are they called, like Pikachu was wearing in the movie - the Sherlock Holmes hats?"
"Deerstalker hats," Jester replied sagely. "They might even work with my horns and your ears! But..." Jester trailed off thoughtfully, then nodded. "I think I would rather have a fedora. You know, like the old timey detectives! The private dicks! But I think I might have to talk to Gilmore about that."
"I think the rule is that you can only have one fedora per group before people start rolling their eyes. But it totally works for the detective theme and you would look super cute in one," she hurried to add with a big white grin of her holographically rendered human teeth. "Maybe Gilmore can make a 'deerstalker' in my size while he's at it?" It would be harder to solve crimes if the adult-sized hat kept sliding over her eyes. "I can use some of the money I got for clothes and things from the school." Jester's mom had already paid for her wardrobe, after all. "...Are you sure that's what they're called? That's a weird name for a hat."
"I guess maybe it was a hunting hat? That would make sense," Jester thought out loud. "We can rename it! It really should be called the Sherlock by now. We can talk to Gilmore about a Sherlock for you, and a fedora for me! And then when we wear them, people will know we're on official detecting business!"
"So we'll have hats, and advertising, the cornerstones of any good detective agency," Nott ticked off on her fingers as they made their way along the sidewalk. "You said you can draw us something, like a logo - do we need business cards? What else do you need to be a detective? ...A license, probably, but I don't think a couple of kids in crayon colors are going to get a legitimate certification for that sort of thing."
"Licenses are for normal people," Jester stated carefreely. "We're way cooler than that. We can print business cards with our logo and an e-mail address to get in touch? Like, ummm, thebestdetectiveagency at gmail dot com."
Nott really didn't care if they had a license either. Especially not if their customers were just going to be fellow students. "That's a good idea, a business email address! Very official. And I really like that name, 'Best Detective Agency.' If I needed to hire a detective, I'd stop looking once I saw that and contact those guys right away."
"I know, right!" Jester agreed as they reached the grounds and slipped inside. She sighed happily. "I'm so glad we're roommates, Nott."
"Jester, there is no one I would rather launch an impromptu detective agency with because we saw a cute cartoon rodent do it," Nott agreed. "Let's see a man about some hats."
