Vex, Vax, and Caleb: Day 5, backdated to 3/29/19
Twinswap Plot, Day 5 With Caleb's help, they fix it!
Vex, Vax, Trinket, and Caleb sat around the work table spending one more afternoon trying to reverse this magic. The original charm was on the table, as well as a stack of paper and various odds and ends.
“I think we were looking at this wrong,” Vex said. “This…” she gestured to Caleb’s notes and the oddities next to them. “This one should work. But… maybe put Trinket away so that neither of us ends up a bear.”
Vax looked down at the cub, then smiled sideways as he reached out to ruffle his fur. "Sorry, buddy. If this works, the next time you come out, it'll be yer mum instead of me toting you about.”
“It will work.” It had to because Caleb was running out of ideas. “And everyone will be in their right bodies.” He felt like that part needed to be stressed. No one would be a bear, and no one would be him except him.
Vex gave Caleb a reassuring smile. She was grateful he’d brainstormed and experimented with them to try and fix this. Nobody wanted another mishap on this scale. Vex waited until Trinket was away before taking Vax’s hand—her hand soon to be. She was sure.
“Okay. Read the last one off.” She glanced at Vax, seeing her brother in the way his expression creased. “Time to go home, brother.”
“Okay.” It was a new, untested spell and that meant it could go horrifically wrong, or it could go incredibly, fantastically right. All the possibilities that went with that made Caleb buzz with a heady mixture of fear and excitement. It was—it always was, if he was being honest—a little addictive.
The spell came effortlessly now that Caleb had it down on paper. He didn’t even need to look at it as he recited the incantation and moved his hands in complex gestures. Immediately, he felt the gathering of magic in the air around him. It prickled across his skin like a build-up of electricity, then it pulsed and rolled out like a wave and it was gone.
Vax blinked. At first, he wasn't sure if it had worked. Then he put his hands to his chest and breathed a sigh of relief. "Fuck. Oh thank fuck." Then he looked at Caleb and wrapped his arms around the other boy, hauling him into a hug and a couple of elated kisses on his head and face. "You beautiful bastard, you did it!"
Vex touched the necklace around her neck, feeling Trinket at the hollow of her throat. She let out a soft sigh. “Vax, please don’t assault our dear wizard. I know he’s fucking amazing but that’s a lot of hugging.”
Caleb’s giddy smile of victory faltered with a surprise gasp, and he just stood there under the onslaught, back straight and arms at his side. He gave Vax an awkward pat on the arm and an equally awkward laugh when it was over and said, “Ah hah, yes, I did. And no one is a bear.”
Vax released him obediently, especially upon feeling Caleb go stiff in his arms, then turned toward his sister with a wicked grin. "Well, at least one of us isn't. I don't know about her..."
Despite Caleb's wide-eyed reaction to physical affection Vex leaned in and brushed a light kiss against his cheek. She stepped out of his bubble and threw her arms around Vax, hugging him fiercely to her side. "Not any kind of bear you need to worry about. Caleb, you're a darling. I'll try my best not to fuck up more charms anytime soon.”
A blush turned Caleb’s cheeks pink at the kiss, and he shifted uncomfortably under all the attention. Vax had been a lot to begin with, but someone he found not objectively attractive was a little more than he could handle. He fought the urge to wipe at his cheek which still felt warm from the kiss.
“It happens,” Caleb said. “Illyana made a frog cloud.”
"I don't even know what that means," Vax answered, though he made careful note of the blush blossoming on Caleb's cheeks. Apparently, someone had a thing for his sister.
"Honestly, frog cloud makes complete sense." Vex grinned. "I love you both. We should give Percy the good news. No new magic from me for at least a week!"
“It means it rained frogs. It was supposed to be a fog cloud,” Caleb told Vax as he started to gather his notes together. He wanted to look into this spell a little more at some point. He had a theory about a modification of it that took his disguise spell into consideration.
Vax looked toward his sister, a small smile on his lips. "You should tell Shinobi."
"He's spoiled," she said wryly. "He can wait." Vex touched her necklace and bamfed Trinket back out of the charm. She lifted him up, hugging him close and burying her face against his fur. "Hello, darling. Uncle Vax and I confused the hell out of you all week, didn't we? How about we have a nice picnic outside and I promise I will make it up to you."
Boys could wait. Her bear came first.
Vex leaned against Vax one last time, nudging him affectionately. She smiled warmly at Caleb. "If you need an assistant for any projects soon, let me know. I owe you lab time. Enjoy the rest of your day, boys.”
Caleb didn’t have a lab, the majority of his work was done out of his room, but he understood, and appreciated, the gesture even if it wasn’t necessary. “Ah, you too.”
Vax kissed his sister's cheek one last time before she headed off, then he winked at Caleb. "I owe you one, Red."
“It was a favor,” Caleb said with a shake of his head. “I learned something interesting. That’s all I need.” And maybe a nap. That spell had taken a lot out of him.
