Kitty and Tommy conspire to put a tracker on Pyro in order to discover the location of his base.
Kitty took a deep breath to calm herself as she looked through the crowd. Tommy had the tracker. He knew exactly what to do - and with those smooth pickpocketing fingers of his, Pyro would never see it coming. That is, if she could keep him talking.
She finally spotted the stranger's face near the edge of the crowd of teens and weaved her way in his direction, two regular sodas in hand. As she approached, she waved a little with one, locking eyes with him. "Pyro."
Pyro had been watching Magik dance, because... Well, yes, okay, he should have been watching everybody else to figure out what they could do, come back with as much intel as possible. But there she was, dancing, and she really was hot. And she liked his fire, and was pretty fucking cool. What else was he supposed to do?
So he didn't notice the brunette from that facility walk up to him until she was almost there, and he turned to her, snapping his shark lighter shut but keeping it in his hand. "...Shadowcat, right?" Kitty, he was pretty sure was her human name, if he remembered right.
"What gave me away?" she smiled and offered him a soda. "Not spiked, I promise."
"Sure, I'll take it anyway," Pyro said with a half smile, and did in fact take the soda. "Thanks. What's up?"
"What's not?" she asked, taking a sip of her soda then reaching up to push her hair behind her ear. That was the signal to Tommy. Push her hair behind her ear and he could start working his way over - staying out of Pyro's sight, of course. "I mean, am I not supposed to be curious about you? Or about the others you're working with?"
Tommy'd been hanging out by the speakers, partly because he had a pretty clear line of the sight to the dancing from there because the music controls were there -- and damn, he'd kill to get his hands on an actual mixer. Maybe Warren could be convinced to shell out for one - the basic systems were only a couple hundred bucks.
Oops - there went Kitty, and that meant he was on. Tommy slipped away, heading for the cooler first - the obvious first port of call.
"Well, curiosity goes both ways," Pyro pointed out with an amused purse of his lips. "But go on, ask your questions. Can't promise I'll answer them."
She rolled her eyes. "This isn't an interrogation. I mean, if it was, it'd be about why you left all those people in a burning building when you could have easily held the fire back until you saw them get out."
"Oh, come on, you had plenty of time to get out," Pyro stated dismissively. "You're just pissed we got there first."
"Sure," Kitty shrugged. "And I'm a little annoyed about getting blasted behind a fire line for trying to help your speedster, too."
Kitty wasn't half-bad at the espionage-y stuff. Tommy had a relatively clear line of sight to Pyro's back, and a chance to consider his options. Jeans were a lot less likely to come off and get forgotten at a party in the woods - possible, but less likely. The jacket would be a whole lot easier to get at, though. On the plus side, he'd been wearing the same jacket at the facility (and why the hell had Illyana invited this guy, anyway?) so it was probably one he was attached to. Fine; jacket it was.
Drink in one hand, other one in his pocket, fingertips brushing against the tracker, Tommy aimed himself at the dance floor on the other side of Kitty and Pyro and began his totally casual approach.
"Like you wouldn't have done the same or worse if you thought one of your teammates was in danger," Pyro rolled his eyes. He paused, considered it, but no, seriously. "I'm gonna be worried for Magik if you tell me you wouldn't have."
"I might have asked a question or two before violence. I could get Magik out without hurting anyone, but that's me, and you might not have that avenue open to you, so sure, I get that you were protecting him," Kitty agreed. "On that note - everyone on your team doing okay?"
...yeah, he was worried about Magik if her teammates' instincts in that sort of situation would have been to ask questions before protecting her. And Pyro was a shit actor even when he tried to hide what he was thinking; he wasn't even trying to keep his feelings from his face as she spoke. "Yeah," he answered shortly. Judgmental know-it-all. "We're fucking peachy."
He probably should be making more of an effort since she was Magik's best friend, but she was getting on his nerves perched on her high horse like that.
Whoops; fire-boy was getting testy, which meant Tommy had to do his thing before more than just the polite conversation went up in smoke.
And Tommy's dumb-ass brother's dumber-ass roommate was heading in his direction, which gave Tommy the perfect excuse to veer out of his way. Out of Teddy's way, and brushing just close enough to Pyro to drop the tracker, far enough to be an accidental personal-space invasion.
Kitty frowned, even though inside, she was rejoicing. Tracker placed! Still, she also didn't understand his tone. "You really care about her, right?"
Pyro glanced at the guy that brushed past him - Minimoff, it turned out, but he wasn't sure he wanted to talk to any of them anymore - and looked back at Shadowcat just in time for her question to take the wind right out of his sails. He frowned, irritation making way for confusion. "What?"
She looked at him for a moment, searching his face, then she sighed. "Look, I'm sorry I gave you a hard time. I really care about her too, you know."
What was she looking at him like that for? Pyro shifted his balance slightly, and resisted the urge to flick his zippo open and closed again. Maybe even light it up? Fuck no, he didn't need the comfort of fire to deal with one little mutant.
And then she went and apologized, and this was so far from any kind of conversation Pyro was used to that he stopped trying to figure it out. "Sure you do," he answered, because it was better to focus on her than on him, that much was always, always true, of any conversation that wasn't about fire. "She's great." She'd better care for Magik, anyway. Magik herself would kick her ass if she didn't.
Kitty smiled and tipped her soda at him. "She is. That's why, if you break her heart," and this time, she leveled a look at him that could take out a city block. "No amount of fire will save you."
Then she turned and walked away.
"Don't think she needs you making threats for her!" Pyro called out at her back, then sighed in annoyance. He glanced at Magik dancing, but he ended up turning away to go and sit a little way off, on a rock by the lake, where he could play with his fire a bit.
After snagging a spiked juice from the cooler, Kitty took a few minutes to circle around through the crowd, then finally met up with Tommy. "You got it done, right?"
Tommy'd found himself someone's abandoned camp chair in the meantime, and was sprawled out in it, his fingers tapping a rhythm against the side of his cup. He glanced up when Kitty approached, and spread his arm wide. "You didn't see my magnificence in action? I'm hurt."
"Pft, I saw. Just wanted to make sure it hooked into the lining like it was supposed to," she huffed, kicking playfully at his foot.
He was perfectly placed to grab her and tug her over into his lap, but then either she or Bobby would annihilate him, and he'd deserve it. So he kicked back, relying on her powers to make sure he wouldn't actually make contact. "As far as I can tell," Tommy confirmed. "I'd have to stick my hand all the way in there to really make sure it's seated, but I don't think we're each other's types."
She hopped back a step and stuck her tongue out at him. "Okay, we'll have to hope it sticks until he gets back to their super-secret-wherever that they all live."
"Fingers crossed, kiss a lucky rabbit's foot, and so on." He watched Pyro for a minute, as the guy moved through the crowd. "Worse comes to worst, looks like Illyana knows how to get in touch. We can always try again."
Kitty let herself glance, but then looked back, not wanting to draw attention to herself and Tommy talking about Pyro. "Maybe. I think I kind of burned a bridge there..." she paused. "Pun not intended."
Tommy snickered. "Heh. I'll take it anyway."
