A few days after Yorkland, Yana goes to Kitty for advice

Illyana sat on the bed in her workroom, her hand still in her hair where she'd started to push it back and then just...left it, wearing an old t-shirt of Pyro's and her Xavier's gym shorts that she used as pajamas. Which was, at least, appropriate, seeing as she'd been trying to go to sleep.

She hated sleeping alone. Hated it. She'd gotten spoiled since moving in to Asteroid M; she was used to having Pyro there, making her feel warm and wanted. Safe. Normally, she fell asleep quickly.

Normally. But there wasn't anything normal about the past week or so, was there?

She wasn't even sure she'd done the right thing, going off to sleep in her own bed. Pyro'd said he "needed some time" for more than just snuggling, and considering he'd died, she could understand him really not being in the mood for more. At the same time, though, she'd felt rejected. And she couldn't even blame him for that, considering that it had been her fault that he'd died.

Except...it hadn't. Not really. It hadn't been her in the other universe, just like it hadn't been him. They just had the memories of it all, which seemed patently unfair considering the other versions of themselves had done all kinds of stupid shit that they were now paying the price for. Her emotions were all over the place; guilty, relieved, rejected, powerless. She couldn't even imagine how Pyro felt about it, other than fucked up, and she didn't know how to ask.

She didn't feel as if she really knew much of anything at all, considering how many of her beliefs about herself had been turned on end by a non-demonic version of herself who'd nonetheless still gotten the person closest to her killed.

She sighed and called up a stepping disk. Thinking it all through again wasn't going to get her anywhere, and she was tired of it anyway. Hopefully a quick scrying in Limbo would reveal that Kitty was still awake. If not, she'd just go back to before she'd gone to bed. And hope that her former roommate had some idea as to what she should be doing, because she didn't have a clue.

Kitty, for her part, was hiding. She paced the inside of her workroom, a circuit board in her hands and her mind far, far away from anything resembling work. She still couldn't believe what had happened. She had seen... a lot of crazy things since coming to Xavier's, aliens among them, but this? It was... breathtaking. Not to mention really difficult to accept. Okay, sure, she could accept what had happened. Fine. Alternate New York. Okay. But that thing? Those feelings she had had for Pete? She'd thought it was just a crush, but... it was really difficult to shake what her other self had felt.

And that didn't even touch the fact that their rescue mission had completely failed, and Pyro had been killed. Killed. Was he...was he alive now? Did he just... come back? Or was he actually dead? Did she call the Brotherhood? Would they even want her to?

After some deliberation as to whether or not she should knock first, thereby risking being seen at the school without permission, or risk startling Kitty by just showing up, Illyana appeared just inside the door to Kitty's workroom. "Hey," she offered, lips quirking in an approximation of a smile. "How goes?"

Kitty was definitely startled, dropping the circuit board and yelping almost simultaneously. After a beat of catching her breath and realizing who it was, she breathed out, relieved. "God, Yana."

"Sorry?" Illyana offered an apologetic half smile and shrugged. "I shoulda called first, huh?"

"Or even just a text," Kitty agreed wryly, crouching down to scoop up stray pieces of metal.

"I'll remember next time," Illyana promised. She walked over and plopped down in Kitty's lab partner's chair. "Are you busy? Which I should've probably asked first, too."

"Maybe, but I'm not," Kitty told her, then stood and dumped the pieces on her desk before looking over at Illyana. "And I really need to know if Pyro is okay."

"Pyro's...alive?" Illyana answered. She pushed her hand back through her hair and grimaced. "No thanks to me."

Slumping down into her own chair, Kitty let out a shuddering sigh. "Oh thank god. Pete and I were trying to get to you guys, but there was a fire at the orphanage, and then everything else went to hell and by the time we got there..."

"They'd hung him." Illyana swallowed hard and nodded. "I know. I had a front row seat."

"Do I even want to know what happened?" Kitty asked quietly.

Yana shrugged and rubbed at her forehead. "I had a crush on him. For like, years." She frowned and rubbed at her forehead. "I remember that. Like I lived it. I remember telling you, probably until you were sick of hearing it. I still can't figure out how."

"You told me. A lot," Kitty agreed, shaking her head. "And I know what you mean. I remember all of it as if it were...some kind of second life."

"Yeah." Illyana sighed. Yay for a second life that was worse than her first. Except...mostly, it hadn't been. Not until she'd screwed it up, herself. "Anyway, he finally noticed. And we went back to his place, and..." she shrugged and waved the details aside. Kitty could guess. "And then he blew me off." She made an awkward face. "So I went to the hedge witch and had him cursed."

Kitty rubbed her face. "I figured it was something like that. I didn't factor in the hedge witch part, though. I mean, good on you? But also wow."

"Not so good," Illyana admitted. "First, the hedge witch was Eileen, so basically, I got Pyro's best friend to curse him. And second? He was supposed to have had a really crappy week. I didn't think-" She shook her head and grimaced. "Yeah. That sums it up, huh? I didn't think."

"We weren't really in the best situation," Kitty pointed out with a sigh.

"Not really, no." Illyana sighed, too. "I really wasn't trying to get him killed, though. And I tried to get him out, and that didn't work, and then it did but everything went wrong anyway, and...yeah." She sighed again. "He cursed me, as they led him off to the gallows. The blessing of Loviatar, goddess of pain. I think it followed me home, because everything kind of sucks."

Kitty frowned. "What happened? I mean, after? I wanted to call, but...I didn't know if I should."

Illyana frowned. "He's been weird." She held up her hand to forestall comments. "I mean, I get that. He remembers being hung; it's gotta be weird. At first he was kinda clingy, and then...well, I think he remembered I'm the one who got him hung, because he went and cleaned the rec room and then hung out with Wanda. But..." She shrugged. "He doesn't want to make out. Or...anything, y'know? Says he needs time." She shrugged and tried to look casual. "I went and slept in my own room last night. Pretty sure he went and slept with Wanda or Eileen, which just goes to show how replaceable I am."

"Oh Yana." Kitty sighed and scooted her chair across the room to her friend, then reached out to take her hand, squeezing it. "I think anyone would need time after that. And I don't think he's replacing you. They're like family to him, you know? Comforting, I'd guess. Like you are with me."

"I guess." Yana quirked a trace of a smile at the comparison and squeezed Kitty's hand back, then dropped it. "And yeah, I kinda get that. I do. I mean, he was Wanda's newbie, and Eileen's his BFF. I go to Pietro when things are fucked up, same thing. Just..." She shook her head. "It's a mess. Not that things with us are ever not. But usually when we can't manage to talk about whatever it is, we've still got...that. Y'know? And I think I maybe screwed that up, which sucks because I wasn't even me."

"And if he's got brains at all, he'll figure that out," Kitty told her quietly. "And if he doesn't? Then I'm here, okay?"

Illyana smiled a bit more, reached for Kitty's hand again and squeezed it. "Yeah, okay." Her smile turned a bit mischievous, and she added, "And in the meantime? You can help me procrastinate going back and tell me about that guy you showed up with."

Kitty felt her cheeks heat and pulled back to spin her chair distractedly. "Pete? He's just this jerk of a student here."

"And...?" Illyana asked leadingly, and leaned forward a little. Distractions were good. And hearing about jerks she didn't know was definitely preferable right now to talking about the one she did.

Taking a deep breath, Kitty ran her hand through her hair. "And nothing. He's just a guy. An obnoxious, egotistical, stuck up jerk of a guy."

"Gotta admit, that sounds more like someone I'd fall for than you," Illyana conceded.

"That's - I am not falling for him," Kitty insisted as she turned back to face her friend.

Illyana grinned Just a little. "Yknow , You're protesting a lot, considering I didn't say you were."

"You implied," Kitty huffed softly.

"Really didn't," Illyana disputed. "I mean, I am now? But I wasn't before."

"You said 'more like someone you'd fall for than me'," Kitty scowled. "That's implying me being part of the equation."

"You were with him," Illyana pointed out. "That automatically makes you part of the equation."

Kitty's head was starting to hurt. "Anyway, he's no one."

"Okay." Illyana shrugged. If Kitty said he was no one, he was no one. At least until her former roomie gave her another opening.

Shoulders relaxing a little, Kitty leaned back in her chair. "So... will you be okay with the Brotherhood while Pyro is figuring things out? I mean. They aren't being hard on you or anything are they?"

Illyana blinked. "No. Why would they be? I mean, Wanda's probably not real fond of me at the moment, but she always takes Pyro's side - which is fair, because Pietro always takes mine. Eileen usually just tells us both to keep her out of it, but she's a mess too so she's busy baking." She paused. "I should ask her to make kolaczkis. She makes awesome kolaczkis."

"Maybe you should bring me some, some time," Kitty offered a small smile.

"I could." Illyana smiled back. "Or, y'know, you could switch teams. I've got a hardly used room I'd be willing to share with the right person. You'd just have to ignore the pentagram on the floor."

Kitty gave her friend a knowing look. "You know I won't do that."

"Yeah, I know. I just feel like I need to make the offer once in a while." Illyana's smile tilted and she shrugged.
