The girls do some R&R after doing some superheroing.

God, the shower had felt so good. Monica had spent half night lighting up a stretch of highway where a good half-dozen cars had smashed into each other. The rescuers had been able to work in almost daylight conditions thanks to her. That was an important service for sure, but not exactly what she'd anticipated when she'd first come up with this idea. It had been Shen down below, ripping open broken vehicles and later moving them off the road who'd done more like what Monica had hoped to do. Didn't matter. What mattered was that they'd helped saved lives and that feeling was amazing.

She walked into the empty rec room and dropped onto a couch, too wired still to consider going to sleep. Classes were going to suck big time the next day, but right now she just wanted some time with Shen to decompress, relax, and maybe, if she was lucky, cuddle.

Shen was exhausted, but also completely wired. Adrenaline, and the joy of having made a difference tonight, were going to keep her up for a while, so she was glad that Monica had offered they meet up in the rec room. (And if it led to some making out, well, all the better.) Dressed in a pair of shorts and a tank top, she walked over to the couch and dropped on its end, draping her wings over the back of the armrest. "Hey," she said, her eyes glinting with elation. "Did you hear about that kid? He's gonna be all right, and they were able to save his legs."

Monica closed her eyes and sent up a silent prayer of thanks to God. She'd taken some time earlier to say prayers for those who'd survived and it was good to hear that one at least had been answered. "That's the best news of the night. Man, Shen, we did so good."

"I know!" Shen agreed with an excited smile. "You were amazing. How are you feeling? You kept that light up for so long..."

"I was basically a big nightlight." She snorted, then smiled. "So I'm tired. A bit jealous of everything you got to do, but that light saved them time and made things easier so... so I still helped."

"We wouldn't have been there without you," Shen pointed out with raised eyebrows, "and you helped me out, never mind everyone without enhanced sight." She quieted down, and reached out to squeeze Monica's shoulder. "Everybody felt better once there was light, and that involves the people trapped inside their cars. You seriously helped." If they'd kept panicking, the casualties would have been higher. That went beyond helping the EMTs and firefighters see what they were doing in the wreckages.

Monica put her hand on Shen's. "You don't need to worry. I know all that in my head and even if I could do what you did too, providing that light was still really important. It's just that I'm beat and it takes a bit for my heart to catch up to my brain sometimes."

Shen tangled their fingers together, and gave Monica's hand a squeeze. "Hey, in my experience, most stuff we know but can't feel? It's good to hear from somebody else. But if you'd rather I shut up, any time, just say the word." She let a beat go by, then added, "You really were amazing out there." It worked on such a powerfully symbolic level, too, this amazing female mutant of color providing light. Let the alt right try and spin that the wrong way.

"You've already said that." But she smiled anyway. "You were too. There are people alive tonight because of what you did. What we did. I think I'm going to need a lot of time and a lot of ice cream to get my head around that."

Shen had said it before, and she would say it again, and she didn't see the problem there. "We can do something about the ice cream," she replied with a smile, pushing up to her feet. "Let me go check the kitchen."

Monica nodded and let her go. She put an elbow on the back of the couch and lay her chin on it so she could watch for Shen's return. Maybe it was because she was emotional and tired, but right now it was awfully hard not to let her mind wander into pretending that this was a moment between girlfriends. Dangerous territory for certain, but it was tempting. They were good friends, doing important things together, making out often enough... they were 80% there. But the missing 20% was all Shen and there wasn't a damn thing Monica could do right now to change that. She sighed. Friends was enough.

Probably.

Shen came back a couple of minutes later with a pint of non-dairy Cinnamon Buns, and two spoons. "Victory!" She settled back on the end of the couch, for wing reasons, and held one of the spoons out to Monica with a smile.

"That must be stuff you had them bring in." She took her spoon and eyed the bucket, but it was more show than an honest wariness. She'd hung been around Shen long enough to know that her vegan foods were generally pretty damn tasty.

"You know, the school's been seriously awesome with vegan options from the start," Shen answered as she pulled the lid off, and enthusiastically dug in, making a happy noise around her spoon. "I dare you to try this and not find it delicious."

Monica didn't wait for Shen to take her spoon out before digging out some ice cream for herself. "You don't even need to dare me. You've never led me astray yet."

"Ice cream is sacred, anyway," Shen wisely confirmed, before grinning over at Monica. How could she feel so exhausted and so happily, wonderfully wired all at once? She didn't know, but it was an awesome feeling.

"Mmmmm," Monica said, half in agreement, half in appreciation for the ice cream she was tasting. "This is so good. You know how to do the no-milk thing right."

"I know how to do a lot of things right," Shen replied with a grin, because of course she was going to go there.

Monica didn’t look up at Shen and she let a sly smile slip across her face. “Too many things. You are entirely too attractive in too many ways.”

Shen beamed at Monica. "We saved lives, and now I'm getting ice cream and compliments. This is almost the perfect day."

"Almost. What would make it absolutely perfect is if we finished with something more than ice cream." She tried to raise an eyebrow, but giggles got to her first. "Oh boy, that sounded awful."

Shen ruffled her feathers, amused and pleased, and held an inviting hand out to Monica, biting down on a grin. "I can live with that. Come on," she invited her closer, since Shen couldn't really move closer without some wing discomfort. "Let's make it absolutely perfect."

"The ice cream will melt," Monica chided, but she was already moving in to get closer to Shen. Girlfriend or not, whatever this was that they had was definitely worth the loss of ice cream.
