Billy finds a vegan Bird of Prey flying around in the Danger Room and finds out she's pretty cool.
Shen had not exactly been a slacker in terms of training that summer. Her muscle definition was proof, as was what she could now do in the air. There had been very rare days when she hadn't either worked out in the gym, gone flying (with Warren or on her own), or both. Honestly, a day without flying felt wasted by now, because flying was the best. The end.
But with recent events, she'd thrown herself into it even more. That was why she was currently in the Danger Room, in a pair of shorts and a sports bra, wings and talons out, working her way through a flying agility program. It was a bit like those laser security systems you saw in movies - lots of lasers moving through the space, and she had to get from point A, on the ground on one side of the room, to point B, on the ceiling and on the opposite end. The lasers were less close together than in the movies, of course, and whenever she messed up and one of them touched her, she had to start over.
Each time she managed to complete the course, she upped the difficulty level, but she had been stuck on this one for nineteen freaking tries now. She'd drop under a beam, or veer away from another one, and yet another would come out of nowhere. She was beginning to get seriously frustrated.
Attempt number 20. She looked at the laser beams moving probably not so randomly across the room, then flapped her wings as she pushed off. She twirled in midair to avoid one of the lasers, then tucked her wings to her back and let her momentum carry her just between two others. She spread her wings to stop her descent, and barely had time to fly out of the way of another beam. She soared up towards the ceiling, changed direction when a beam swept in front of her, misjudged, let herself drop in a desperate attempt not to hit the beam, and ended up blocking one with her left wing when she stopped her fall.
The lasers all disappeared and she flew back to the ground, looking very, very annoyed. "I am so done for the day," she muttered.
Billy had been avoiding the Danger Room, mainly because he really didn't know how exactly a room was able to hold against so many different kinds of powers and he was nervous that one wrong move from him could destroy it.
He took a deep breath as he walked in, finding himself in a room that had large plexiglass windows in it that showed a huge training area when he moved closer to get a better look. Billy gasped a little when he saw that the room was being used at the moment and he was blown away as he watched the girl dive and twist in the air with her wings.
There were lasers after her! What the hell?!
"So, it's not just Warren with wings." He muttered to himself, watching her with concern as she finished the session looking irritated but no worse for wear. Billy wondered if he should get out of here before she spotted him, not sure if she would appreciate being watched while she trained, but when she looked up right at him all he could offer was a weak wave.
And she had an audience, awesome. Shen frowned as she looked at her observer - new kid, clearly. Wait. What the hell? Her eyesight had grown a lot sharper over the summer but still, in case distance was making her imagine things, a few powerful flaps of her wings brought her up to the observation post, only separated from the kid by the window now.
Nope, he definitely looked like Tommy with a hair dye. We-eird, but not unexpected after that post on the network. She just hadn't expected him to look that much like him.
Shen waved back at the boy, chewing thoughtfully on her bottom lip, then gestured to indicate she was going to come up to meet him. If he wanted to meet her halfway, he could, but otherwise, she flew down to the Danger Room door to head up to the observation post.
Billy watched in amazement as she flew, only last minute catching her signal that she would be coming out, which he took as a positive sign and went to go meet her in the hallways.
"That was really impressive!" He gushed when they finally met without a big sheet of glass between them. "The laser didn't hurt you, did it?"
"They're not that kind of laser," Shen confirmed with a shake of her head. She couldn't help but watch him closely; the features were all Tommy, but the coloring and the expressions were off. So. Weird. She tried not to be obvious about it, though; he must be so sick of hearing about it all the time, and their family business was none of hers. So, she tilted her head to the side and pursed her lips in an amused grimace. "It would've been even more impressive if you hadn't had to ask that, though." She would get through that sim someday, dammit. Just... apparently not today.
Billy felt a little better knowing they weren't the burn your skin off type of lasers, but even if they weren't what she was doing in there looked really fantastic. He glanced at her wings and was once again amazed by how a person could control their wings.
He held out his hand to her with a friendly smile. "My name is Billy. I'm new if you couldn't tell."
"I couldn't tell at all," she deadpanned, obviously joking as she shifted her talons back into hands to shake his. "I'm Shen. I've been here for a couple of months, if you need pointers on anything." He had obviously already met Tommy, but the speedster could be a jerk and a half, so she'd throw that out there.
He grinned at her sarcasm and gave her hand a firm shake, pulling away to shove his hands in his jean pockets and glanced out over the obstacle course. "Thanks. I will be holding you to that cause I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing about eighty percent of the time."
He glanced back at her and wondered if maybe she was a shapeshifter like Kurt since she had talons earlier, but he wings were still there. "Your wings are really cool by the way."
Shen glanced back at her wings over her shoulder, then turned her smile on him. "They're the best. You mind if I ask what you do?" He hadn't quite asked about her, so she wasn't a hundred percent certain he'd be cool with her asking, and she didn't want to infringe on his privacy.
"Oh, I can control electricity. Control being a word used very loosely and I can fly...a little. Right now, I'm just a champ at floating." He smiled a little and since she had asked about his, he felt more comfortable asking about hers.
"What about you?"
"What you see is what you get," she replied with a smile. "The wings, the talons..." She shifted one of her hands back, waved it at him, then reverted it back to a hand. "The necessary stuff to fly, and fly fast. I'm your friendly neighborhood bird of prey." She paused, then shrugged, amused. "Except vegan."
Billy chuckled and nodded, watching in fascination as she turned her hands to talons a back. "That is so wickedly sweet. If you can change your talons, do your wings change too or are they a there?"
He hoped that wasn't rude.
"No, I can drop them, but I tend not to, when I can get away with it," Shen explained. "They feel like a part of me already, you know?" She smiled. "We'll have to go flying together some day." Once he could do better than float, but saying so felt like an insult.
"You can drop them?" Maybe that was just weird wording and she meant she could just shift them back like her talons, but already in Billy's mind he was seeing her large wings just drop off with a comical thud.
"Oh! Yeah. That would be cool, though I don't know how long we'll be waiting on that. How long have you been here?"
"Early July," she answered his last question, to get the short answer out of the way. Then she wrinkled her nose, but she was smiling. "But yeah, I can literally drop them. They turn into this odd green goo. It's pretty squicky, I tend to only do it in the showers where it's easy to clean up. Mutations are weird."
"What?" Billy asked dumbly, his mind trying to wrap around the fact that those pretty wings on her back would suddenly turn in to green goo. He glanced at her wings and then her several times before shaking his head with a smile. "Geeze, you're telling me. Did you just one day have wings or did they have to grow? And how on earth did you discover you could goo them?"
"They grew," Shen nodded with a grimace. "It took a while for my body to learn to grow them fast, and the first... took ages. Or so it felt." Tamara had it worse, though, by far, so Shen figured she was pretty lucky. But then she looked awkward. "And, well. I was freaking out at having hurt your not-brother by messing up a landing, in the early days. And they just sort of... fell off."
"Oh geeze. I'm sorry." He wanted to ask what had happened, but he didn't want her to have to think about anything that made her panic or upset so he kept that question to himself to ask Tommy later.
"But that's pretty crazy. Did you freak when they fell off? Or...oozed off? I would be going out of my mind with panic, maybe even cry a little." He said it with a proud voice, like that fact that he was a hot mess was an accomplishment and gave her a smile.
Shen chuckled, because he wasn't wrong. "There would definitely have been tears if I hadn't known that might happen. But I did! So, a minor freak-out on top of the previous one, and a major squick factor. Plus, they started growing back immediately. I've got better control now."
"That's good." He grinned, liking this girl more and more. He glanced out the large windows again into the Danger Room before turning back at Shen with a hopeful look. "Can I ask you a favor?"
"Shoot," she nodded decisively.
"So, the Danger Room look umm...intimidating." That was putting it mildly in Billy's opinion. "I was wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me figure out how to...work it?"
He had just seen lasers and he had no idea how to even start it, even more he hoped they had a super weenie hut junior setting.
"Oh, sure," Shen stated easily, and gestured for him to join her at the interface. "This is where you select your program..."
