Kurt talks to his family about, well, family.

The six-hour time difference made it hard for Kurt to keep in touch with his family. They tried to talk every week, they’d even scheduled a day and a time to meet regularly, but it didn’t always work out. That had been the case recently and it was over two weeks now since Kurt had last talked to his mother, or his siblings. He missed them. He always missed them, but when the week of not hearing their voices turned into weeks, the homesickness became almost too much to bear. Fortunately, things had fallen back into place this week and they were going to talk.

Excited, and honestly a little nervous, Kurt settled down in his desk chair and put his headphones on. They were able to Skype now (thanks to a laptop that had been a collective gift from the troupe), which helped ease the missing more when they did get to talk. It was still a few more minutes before his mother was supposed to be signing on, so he opened up his email to pass the time with a distraction.

The sound of a contact coming online buzzed up shortly, followed by the "ringing". When he clicked, his mother's face appeared, smiling and eager. "Kurt! Have you been eating enough? You look thin.

Kurt's happy smile at seeing his mother's face turned into an annoyed sigh. "Yes, mom, I’m eating enough. The kitchen is open 24/7." Eager to change the subject, he quickly followed with, “How're you? How’s everyone?

Margali provided some exposition on Stefan's latest adventures in hurting himself through absurd attempts at danger then reported on Jimaine's exploits. She finished with. “We all miss you. And worry about you.

I miss you too.” Not wanting his mother to worry more because of it, though, Kurt smiled and reassured, “I’m okay. You don’t need to worry. It’s been quiet here.” He felt a twist of guilt for lying. Things hadn’t been quiet, not with how busy he’d been planning on coming out. But, he couldn’t tell his mother that.

Kurt rested his folded arms on the desk, his tail twitching nervously as he worked himself up to say something he’d been thinking about for awhile now. “Can I ask you something? About my parents?

Margali looked surprised, but nodded. "Of course, schatz.

The relief that his mother was okay with Kurt asking helped to ease the knots in his stomach. “One of the boys at school has a mutation that let’s him read your genetics. I…had him look at mine because I wanted to know why I was always blue while everyone else didn’t get their mutations until they were teenagers.” He exhaled shakily. “He said that I’m a second generation mutation and that one, or both, of my parents were mutants. When you found me did…did either of my parents look like me?

Margali bit at her bottom lip and looked down. "No. No, and I think I would've remembered…"

That’s what I told Simon,” Kurt said and he wasn’t sure if what he felt was disappointment or queasy relief. “Seeing a blue person is the kind of thing that’s hard to forget.” He grinned. “Even if it would have been overshadowed by an adorable, blue baby.

Just so.” Margali looked slightly relieved herself. “I understand that you’d like to know. For your sake, I wish I knew more.

Kurt smiled some at the sentiment and was hit with sudden rush of wishing he could hug his mother. “I know.” He chuckled after a moment, his smile becoming amused. “I’ve something else I want to tell you. It’s a little, ah, hard to believe, though. Just a forewarning.

Margali's eyebrows went up, but she nodded slowly. "Thank you, schatz. I think I'm as ready as I will ever be.

Honestly, Kurt doubted there was any being ready for this level of weird. It just happened and you had to adjusted your perceptions accordingly. “There’s a girl here who’s my daughter in another universe. So, not really my daughter, but also sort of my daughter.

Margali blinked slowly. She repeated the words, “In another universe…" as if she'd never heard them. She probably hadn't, in that specific order, anyhow.

My daughter, yes,” Kurt finished. He pulled up a picture of himself and TJ on his phone and turned it toward the computer to show his mother. “Her name’s Talia Josephine Wagner, but everyone calls her TJ. It’s hard being here for her, I think. So far from home. And, I thought, maybe, having family—a grandmother, an aunt, an uncle…—would make things a little easier.

"I... of course, yes, she is family,” Margali replied, realizing she should make that clear first. "I'm just... is it her mutant ability? To travel to different... universes?

Kurt realized he probably should have started there. “No. She said someone sent her here. Her mutation lets her throw little bolts of energy.

Margali took a moment to process this, then asked, "So she knows... a different you?

Older too,” Kurt confirmed with a nod. “I don’t know anything about him? Me? I don’t ask. It feels wrong too.” He made a face. “And really weird.

Margali nodded solemnly. "I can imagine so. But you--you like her? She's a nice girl?

Kurt nodded, but shifted into a crouch to get more comfortable in his seat before answering, “I do, and she is. She’s a little like me.” He chuckled. “If I’d grown up in a world that knew of and wasn’t afraid of mutants. You, Jimaine, and Stefan will love her.

Will you bring her soon?

Yeah, if I can find someone to give us a lift. I don’t want to inconvenience anyone.” It was too bad coming out wouldn’t make travel any easier. He wouldn’t be able to take a plane home; it would be too expensive.

"Promise them a home cooked meal and a good show,," Margali suggested, looking much more comfortable now. "Do you want to tell your brother and sister, or should I mention it?

Kurt glanced past his mom as if he expected to see his siblings there. “If they’re free now, I’ll tell them, but if not, it’s alright if you do.

"Stefan is here. Where's your sister?" Margali asked someone off the screen.

"I'll go get her. Wait for us, Kurt!" Stefan shouted.

Okay!” Kurt shouted back at him, then smiled at his mom. “How’s the rest of the troupe?

Margali animatedly told Kurt a few stories of his friends and family, and then Stefan and Jimaine came crashing into the room shouting: “Kurt!"

Jimaine! Stefan!” Kurt shouted back just as happily.

"Tell us all your news!" Jimaine shoved into the frame with Margali.

"Yes, but tell me, not her! Stefan said, that wicked 'I'm gonna piss off my sister' look all over his face.

Kurt grinned as his siblings vied for center stage in the screen. “I don’t know. What are you going to give me for it?

Uhhhh... kinder surprise!” Stefan tried.

Ten kinder surprises!” Jimaine countered.

And the winner is Jimaine with twelve kinder surprises!” Kurt crowed, lifting his arms in victory.

"Hey, she only said ten!" Stefan complained.

"Twelve it is!" Jimaine said, looking smug. "What's going on in New York?

Kurt rubbed the back of his neck as he let out a chuckle that tapered off into a sigh. “Ahh, okay. I already told mom, but there’s a girl here who’s from another reality annnnd in that reality there’s a grown-up version of me. That’s her dad.

Stefan and Jimaine looked at each other... and burst out laughing. “That’s a good one!” “Oh, that’s new!

It’s not a joke. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m telling the truth.” Kurt took his cellphone back out and brought up a picture of himself and TJ. He held it up to show his siblings. “That’s TJ.

They stopped laughing almost as one. And stared.

I’ll give you guys a minute,” Kurt said, smirking.

"That..."

"But..."

How...???"

Kurt shrugged. “Weird, inter-dimensional travel.

Jimaine looked confused. Stefan just said, "That... is a thing? Oooookay…

It was news to me too.” Jimaine and Stefan were staring at Kurt like he was crazy. He sighed. “Look. I know it’s weird and a lot to take in, but she is stuck here. Alone and away from her family. She needs us.

Jimaine's face went serious immediately as she nodded. Stef's took a little longer, but he got there, looking thoughtful but also kind of amused. He said, "We're with you. And her.

Kurt knew he could count on them. “Thank you both,” he said, smiling at them. “She’s great. You’re going to love her.

"I know we will," Jimaine said with another nod, this one more final. "When can we meet her?

Hopefully soon. Travel is difficult right now, but once I figure that out, we’ll come to see you.” Kurt couldn’t wait. He missed home so much, and it would be great to be able to go back and visit everyone.

"Okay. Hopefully not too long. Can we help somehow?" But even as he asked, Stefan looked like he knew the answer was no.

I’d say not unless you want to steal a plane, but I don’t want to give you any ideas,” Kurt joked, trying to make light of the situation. “Don’t worry. Really. There’re teleporters here who can travel further than I can. I’m thinking about asking for a favor.

Jimaine didn't look amused, but Stefan chuckled and nodded. "Tell them we'll feed them! And give them a show.

Perfect!” Kurt held his hand up to the camera for a pretend, over the internet high-five. “See, Jimaine! I told you there was a reason we kept Stefan around! That’s a great idea. Who could say no to an offer like that?

Jimaine pulled an awful face.

Stefan looked triumphant. "Exactly! Well, we'll expect you soon, then?"

Jimaine cheered up slightly at that.

Kurt grinned. “It’s a promise.
