Jean and Wanda catch up during the mutant field trip.
Wanda loitered more or less contentedly inside the used bookstore until she caught sight of a familiar redhead accompanied by a bunch of not-so-familiar guys - and Scott, which was both a surprise and not, given that he probably figured it was his responsibility to tag along. Whatever. He wasn't the one who'd invited her shopping, so she stepped out of the shop and joined Jean out on the sidewalk.
"So, I'm still considered a responsible chaperone?" she joked.
"How about acceptable company?" Jean smiled wide and risked a quick hug. Wanda wasn't really a touchy-feels kind of girl and it wasn't as if they were BFFs, but things out in the world had been tense for mutants, and being able to properly vent relief was worth maybe taking a hex bolt.
"Works." Wanda hugged Jean back, then stepped back and smirked. "So, how are classes going without me? I'm guessing the Q&A portion goes faster." What could she say? She'd had questions, and she wasn't likely going to get them answered if she didn't ask.
"That's not necessarily a good thing. We got some good discussions out of those questions." Jean nodded over to where the Xavier's crew had fanned out to browse. "Have you met any of the new arrivals?"
"I met Clint." Wanda grinned as she looked around, trying to catch sight of him. "He pinned my arm to the side of a car, but he was pretty cute, apologizing. None of the others." She turned back to Jean and made a face. "I figured I'd have plenty of time once Spring Break was over. So much for that theory, huh?"
"Best laid plans," Jean said with a grimace. "Want me to introduce you? Cal and Caleb are... around here somewhere. And Goodnight and Billy are just over there."
"Goodnight? Please tell me his parents didn't actually name him that?" Wanda asked, checking out the guy in question. "But sure, I'm up for intros. Any you guys already want to get rid of?"
"That's his given name," Jean assured her. "And if you ask him about it, he'll be happy to regale you all about the Robicheauxs before him who wore it. And no. Nice try, but we're keeping them."
"Hey, you can't blame me for trying." Wanda turned so she could look around, obviously interested. "You get all the good looking ones. You could at least trade us one for Mort."
"I don't think any of them would take well to being to being bartered away," Jean said. She linked her arm with Wanda's. "Come on. Introductions and coffees will have to do."
**** Some time later ****
"So, what've you been up to lately?" Wanda offered a crooked, apologetic smile as she and Jean rummaged through the clothing rack at a second hand store. "I talk to Scott more than I do you, but he never tells anything interesting." Which wasn't true, really - Scott talked about interesting stuff. Just not the kind of people-related stuff she really wanted to hear.
"Me personally, or the school collectively? Even for a telepath, the last is a pretty big order." Jean held a loose crimson top with a gold brocade hem up against Wanda for an opinion. "Personally? Helping to get the new students situated. Offering an ear when it's wanted."
"Playing big sister." Wanda eyed the top, smiled, and held out her arm. "I'll never figure out why you guys don't assign newbies to someone. It shares it all around."
"Hey, I've had sixteen years of being the baby sister. I figure I could learn some new perspective, right?" She gave the tp over. "Also, if you don't get this, I'm getting it for you.
"Mentorship isn't a bad idea either," Jean said, turning her attention back to the racks. "Most of the students who come to the school are a little off-balance, but have their feet more or less under them before long." She dropped her voice a bit. "But then there are the ones that just... kind of drift, you know? Or need a lot more guidance. I mean... you met Billy. The new one, I mean."
"Yeah. He seems kinda...cheerful. Is he always like that?" She pulled out a pale green tank top, held it up and eyed Jean critically, then shook her head and put it back on the rack.
"So far that I've seen. I mean, he gets quiet sometimes, but mostly he just seems happy to be out and with Goodnight. Like the whole thing with The Right was just... a bad weekend away from home." Jean grimaced. "Brilliant analysis from the telepath, right? But anyway. He doesn't know anything about the world. He could definitely use someone to help him normalize." The grimace faded into a genuine smile. "He seems to have latched onto Fatale, actually."
Wanda laughed and shook her head. "I'm not sure that's going to help him normalize," she pointed out. "Alex, maybe. But Fatale's not exactly normal herself." She paused and looked at Jean hopefully. "How's she doing? And Alex?"
"They're doing all right, as far as I can tell. I'm not high on their list of confidants, unfortunately. Fatale seems to be getting along with her new roommate, Alex is attending classes."
"So, better than I'd expected." Wanda paused, then shook her head. "No, that's not fair. I wasn't sure how they'd do, really." She grinned a little. "Of whether or not Fatale'd stab her roommate the first night. Maybe having her own newbie's helping." She hoped so. She might have never much liked her blue teammate, but she was still family. She wished her the best. She pulled out a black mini skirt that had been stuck into the wrong wrap, and held it up to Jean for an opinion. "I'm glad Alex is going to classes, though. He's interested in Geology."
"He's bright," Jean agreed. "I'm hoping he and Scott can connect a little more. I'd like to get to know him better."
"Go introduce yourself?" Wanda suggested. "He's pretty friendly, most of the time." She offered a crooked smile. "I've gotta be honest, I miss him. He's easy going compared to the rest of the guys."
"It's nothing he's done, it's just me being ridiculous." She pasted on a falsely bright smile. "'Hi, I'm Jean! I'm the one who's been taking up so much of Scott's attention lately! Hope you don't mind!'" She sighed. "And I know it's not really like that. I just need get over myself and give him a proper welcome."
"Probably," Wanda admitted, amused. "Though honestly, he'd probably be freaked out if he had all of Scott's attention. And Scott may not even have told him he has a girlfriend, because he seems to think that if he tells anyone, you'll disappear or yell 'Trick!' or something." Or, more likely, he wanted to give Jean plausible deniability, just in case she changed her mind.
Jean shook her head. "If I hadn't gotten an early idea of just how stubborn Scott can be, I would have sworn he just wasn't interested, you know?"
"Oooh yes." Wanda offered a crooked smile. "I had a horrible time just getting him to tell me he'd gone on a date with you. I wonder if he figures that talking about it will jinx it?"
"Or maybe I'll do a double-take and realize I could do better or something." Jean shook her head. "All part of his charm," she said, a wry twist at the end of the words.
"He has charm?" Wanda joked, her eyebrows rising. "I missed that somewhere."
