Percy, Vax, and Loki, backdated to 01/04/18
Loki interrupts Percy & Vax's breakfast to introduce himself to Vax. After, Percy and Vax have an important discussion.
Still only half-awake, Percy’s expression was far away as he mechanically spread butter on a slice of wheat toast. It was too early for thinking, and definitely too early for talking, but Vax was beside him, a solid, warm presence, and the companionable silence was nice. He glanced over at Vax at the thought, giving him a small smile.
Covering a yawn with his fist, Percy picked up a little packet of strawberry jelly, and then tore it open. He scooped some onto his knife, then spread it over his toast as well. He took a bite and chewed methodically. God, he really didn’t like mornings. They occurred far too soon in the day, and were unacceptable.
Vax'ildan, on the other hand, was crisply awake, but well aware that Percival didn't have it in him to talk. Instead, he was shoveling Lucky Charms into his mouth while distractedly catching up on Instagram and checking a couple of news sites, out of curiosity's sake. He caught the look and smile from Percy, returning it with a wry smirk at the sleepiness in his eyes, but went back to swallowing down marshmallows faster than they could melt in his milk. "Your shirt's inside out," he lied.
Loki’s internal clock was trained to wake with the first rays of sun and brace for a busy day. Only his schedule wasn’t nearly that full yet, so he dressed meticulously and wandered off to find breakfast. Even with the new hair, it was easy to spot Percy in the cafeteria. Some things never changed. Loki snagged an apple from a fruit bowl and went to plop down next to the two boys. “Good morning, sunshine. Still at odds with dawn father?” Loki leaned back to get a better look at Percy’s companion. He took wild guess. “I have no idea how he’s half asleep if you’re the sight he’s waking up to.”
Percy reflexively checked his clothing--A button down and a vest. Both crisp and neat despite having come from the thrift store. And both right-side out. He flipped Vax off, then returned to his toast. Or, rather, he tried to return to his toast as he was interrupted by Loki's arrival.
Putting his toast down, Percy gave Loki a withering look. "God, I'd forgotten. You're a morning person.”
"An incredibly smart and flattering morning person," Vax agreed, putting down his phone and looking up at the other teen. "Whoever he is."
Loki smiled sweetly. “Learning to deal with mornings is an important defense. They’ll keep creeping up on you.” He extended a hand toward Vax. “Hello. I’m Loki.”
“Vax, Loki. Loki, Vax,” Percy introduced.
Vax cast a brief glance at Percy. So this was the friend from before. The name niggled at the back of Vax's brain - as though he'd heard it before. Something from his father, which he wasn't inclined to remember. "Loki, as in the myth?" he asked instead.
“Named after,” he agreed. “Or descended from, if you’re into that sort of thing.”
“Loki is a prince of Asgard,” Percy explained, then took a much needed sip of coffee.
The Lucky Charms stopped halfway to Vax's lips. "Sorry, what?”
Loki glanced at Percy with amusement. “At some point we should discuss what you’d prefer I say or not say about how we met.” He looked back to Vax. “And yes, resident royalty. We don’t have mutant schools in Asgard.”
Percy smiled some at Vax's reaction. It was fair revenge for the shirt trick. "Vax knows who I am. I'll give you the names of the others. They're fairly hard to miss.”
Vax put the spoon down. Right. Percy was a fancy lord or some such. Which meant he ran around with princes and shit. He swallowed a little, shoving down that echo of intimidation. "Welcome to mutant school, then," and Vax was proud that he didn't sarcastically add, 'your majesty'.
“Thank you,” Loki said with a smile. “It’s a wonder to behold.” He said with a playful glance over Vax.
Percy's slowly waking brain was beginning to realize that having two pieces of his two very different lives in the same room was, to borrow a phrase from Scanlan, weird as fuck. The Percival Loki had known was not the same as the one Vax knew. He'd been kinder back then, less guarded and less jaded. He'd been better.
"Stop flirting with my boyfriend.”
Vax raised his eyebrows, glancing over at Percy again. "I'm missing something important here."
“Spoilsport.” Loki pouted at Percy.
Unmoved by the pout, Percy told Vax, "You're not. Loki's just a brat. I imagine he's still amazed to find I have friends, never mind a boyfriend."
"Well he does," Vax told Loki, and though his tone was easy, there was a crisp, protective edge to it, his eyes sharpening on the other boy.
Loki picked up that edge and narrowly refrained from returning the look. “And lucky him,” he said dryly. “Multiple friends is pretty impressive.”
"Yes, a whole six more than when you knew me. I'm very special," Percy said, his tone a match for Loki's.
He picked up his coffee cup because this was far too early to be doing this much conversing without caffeine, then explained to Vax, "Loki was the only friend I had when I was younger.”
Vax's demeanor softened a little. "Oh? The two of you cavorting through libraries and the pages of a thousand dusty tomes?" he asked, a little amused at the thought. Though, if he was honest with himself, he was relieved more than anything. For some reason, he'd assumed that Percy had been alone most of his life. To know that he'd had some companionship as a child...it was comforting.
“There were libraries,” Loki agreed. “Not as many as I would have liked.” He leaned his chin on one hand. “Percy honored me by looking up from a book. Or I annoyed him long enough that he talked to me. It went something like that.”
“Something like that,” Percy agreed with a bit of a smile. “It was a short-lived friendship. Our families were vacationing at the same resort. Loki was sent home early for being—How did your father put it? A disturber of the peace. Which, in my limited experience with King Odin, means he can’t take a joke. We fell out of touch after that.” His smile was thin and grimly humorous. “I was rather preoccupied with being dead.”
Vax reached up and mussed Percy's hair, intent on keeping that brooding look off of his face so early in the morning. "Then he found us.”
“I’m still getting used to the idea that this,” he gestured at Percy. “Is flesh and blood. I’ve never had dreams that lasted this long, so signs point to yes.”
Trying to fix his hair, Percy said, “I am sitting right here, you know?”
Glancing between Percy and Loki, Vax frowned. "Dreams?"
Loki took another loud bite out of his apple, taking a moment to chew and delay his response. “You know, the sort subconscious wanderings you have when people you care about are gone. Those happy reunions that turn out to be lies when you wake.” He eyed Percy. “Yes. I am very aware you are sitting right here.”
Percy said nothing about dreams about reunions. His were never happy. “Well, you have Vax to thank for it. If it weren’t for him and the others, I’d either be arrested or dead.”
"Arrested, maybe, but you're smart enough to stay alive, even on the streets," Vax told him, before looking up at Loki. "Happy to hear you got that reunion of yours.”
“It’s very unexpected.” Okay, this was too many feelings for breakfast. Loki pushed himself upright. “Vax, I’m very happy to meet you. Thank you for keeping Percy in relatively one piece. I’ve no doubt I’ll be seeing much of you. Sunshine,” this was ironically directed at Percy. “I’m off before the coffee kicks in and your wit sharpens for the day. Toodles.”
Loki swanned away before either boy could respond. He clearly was well versed in a well timed exit.
“Annnd that was Loki,” Percy said with a bit of a smile.
“Whose boyfriend was he hitting on, again?” Vax murmured, frowning after the other teen.
Percy gave Vax a confused look. “Don’t let him get to you,” he reassured. “He enjoys mischief for the sake of mischief. You would think he believes himself to be the real Loki.”
"You mentioned that," Vax glanced back at Percy, not looking very much comforted. "That doesn't exactly help, you know."
Something was wrong. Percy's brain didn't need to be awake to figure that out. "What would help? What are you worried about?”
Vax looked back at him, then stirred his cereal a bit. "Nothing. He was flirting was all. If you feel the same way...?"
Realization hit Percy like Grog's fist. Vax was afraid Percy might leave him. Had Vax always worried that, or was it something Loki had done? Something Percy had done? He'd thought he'd been obvious in his affection--Too obvious, so he'd tempered it, but it had seemed maybe that he'd been wrong.
Percy put his hand over Vax's. "Vax, dearest, no. I'll admit I had a crush on him when I was younger but certainly not now. I--God, Vax, I love you. I don't want to be with anyone else.”
The spoon rattled in Vax’s cereal bowl as it left his fingertips. He looked up at Percy, eyes a little wide, his heart thumping inside his chest fast enough that it took his breath away.
It didn’t matter that it was early in the morning or smack in the middle of the school mess. The next moment, he had Percy’s face in his hands, kissing him breathless.
Though Percy blushed at the very public display of affection, he didn’t hesitate to return it. He kissed back with fervency, a hand over one of Vax’s, the other cupping his neck. Were he in the place to think, he’d worry that this was the first time he’d told Vax he loved him and he probably tasted like coffee and jam toast, but thinking was beyond him, his brain nothing more than a heady, dizzy buzz of happiness.
When Vax pulled back, he brushed his nose lightly against Percy's ear. His doubts weren't... completely gone. Somewhat alleviated, yes, but Loki was a prince, and an acquaintance from Percy's old life, too. In the long run, he was much better for Percy than a mongrel like Vax, and it was possibly just a matter of time. But for now, he would soak up the attention. Breathing out a soft sigh, still bathing in the warmth of the kiss, Vax murmured, "I love you, too.”
Percy’s heart stumbled. Vax…Vax loved him. The kiss had said as much on its own, but hearing it aloud… He knew he didn’t deserve it, and he certainly didn’t deserve Vax. God, did he not deserve Vax. But, he’d treasure the time that he had. “I adore you, Vax’ildan,” he said, tucking hair behind Vax’s ear. “I’m sorry I gave you any reason to doubt it.”
Vax caught his gaze, then looked over Percy's features for a moment, just soaking him in. He didn't exactly know how to take that, but eventually he took a deep breath. "You didn't. This is all me. Jesus, Percival, do you have to be so fucking perfect?”
“I’m not,” Percy said, though when Vax said it he could almost believe it. “Far be it from me to try to convince you otherwise, though. Yes, I am perfect. It’s a daily struggle.’
That caused Vax to smirk, and he slowly released his boyfriend. "Not that much of one, I think."
“How does that saying go?” Percy asked as he picked his coffee cup back up. “It takes one to know one.”
