Duo and Kurt meet for the first time at the New Year's party.

Well, Shen's tequila had helped. Just enough to take any nervousness that might have been threatening around the strangeness of the party. Duo counted themself an extrovert but that didn't mean the initial jump into a crowd couldn't cause a little worry. Regardless, they were well over that now and just in time because there was TJ just a short distance away from them.

No, not TJ. The hair was too short, the body shape wrong, and they, he, was wearing too much clothing. That was Kurt, the german student. TJ's father according to her forum post, but not.

He was also cute, which was as important as any of the other things Duo knew about him, so Duo turned and made a beeline for the boy. They waited for a suitable lull then stepped in front of him.

"Hi! I'm Duo. I've seen you around.”

Kurt looked up at the unfamiliar voice. He greeted its owned with the same friendly smile he was being shown, though his was a fanged flash of white against dark, blue fur. “Hallo, Duo! Nice to meet you! I am Kurt. I think I have seen you around too.” He extended a three-fingered hand for his new friend to shake.

Duo held a hand up and smiled apologetically. "No offense intended, but I have a power that works with skin contact. I haven't had an accident yet, but I'd rather you weren't my first.”

“Oh, I sam sorry!” Kurt apologized, taking his hand away. “No offense taken at all. I appreciate the warning.”

"I imagine I can't the only one that has to give the odd warning about things like that, not with all the remarkable things people here can do." Duo's Salvadoran accent got a little thicker as they relaxed in Kurt's company. Kurt's own accent marked him out as from away, and for the moment at least, that was almost as welcoming as if Duo had found someone from home.

“Have you been at the school long?” Kurt didn’t remember seeing Duo post an announcement on the school’s network, but he could have easily missed it, especially as he was still getting used to having the internet readily accessible to him.

"Since December 6, so almost a month. I took my time choosing classes though so I hardly got started with those before the break." That was a blessing considering how much they'd simply wanted to sleep after they arrived. "I haven't met as many people as I should have, but that's what parties are for!"

“That is exactly what parties are for!” Kurt agreed with a grin. “Has this one been successful for you so far?”

Duo nodded. "So far. People here seem to be absurdly easy to talk to. You're a very generous group of people.”

Kurt nodded around a mouthful of his drink, swallowed, and then said, “Ja. Everyone here is very nice and welcoming. I feel mislead by high school dramas.”

Duo cocked their headed slightly at Kurt's use of ja. They found accents a little tricky to sort in English, but that at least was a word they recognized. "German high school dramas?" They guessed.

“High school dramas in German, but not German cinema,” Kurt answered. “Like Mean Girls and The Breakfast Club.”

"I'm not familiar with them." Although from the way Kurt had said the names it seemed he expected him to be. The only TV at the home had been an ancient thing with an equally ancient VCR that was pulled out occasionally for the younger kids to watch a limited selection of Disney movies on. "I'm horribly behind the times in some ways.”

“You are not the only one, I promise you.” Kurt was behind in some ways, too. He was still catching up on all the technology and news and culture he’d missed growing up in his isolated community. “Do you know Jeanne-Marie? We talked about starting a movie night. You could come if you would like.”

"I would like!" Well then, this was welcome news. "Jeanne-Marie, she's the cute girl with the pointy ears?”

Jeanne-Marie was more than that, but Kurt wouldn’t argue that it was a fitting description. “Yes! She is a dear friend.”

Duo nodded. "Someone mentioned you two earlier. Shen? The girl with wings?" Duo puts their arms out and gave them the tiniest flap. "She said you were both very nice and I should should definitely get to know you." Well, she didn't quite sat that, but close enough.

“I am flattered,” Kurt said, putting a hand over his heart. “I do not need to know what was said to know Shen is too kind.”

Duo smiled and dropped their arms to their side where, they remembered, they'd stuffed the two coolers Monica had bribed them off Shen with - one in each of the oversized side pockets of their oversized shirt. They pulled them out and offered one to Kurt. "A drink? I lost out on Shen’s company to a beautiful young lady but got these as a consolation prize.”

With a chuckle, Kurt accepted the offered drink. “Thank you. As far as consolation prizes go, you could have done worse.” He cracked open the top of the bottle and lifted it in cheers at Duo. “To you, ja? And fortuitous meetings.”

"Ditto!" Duo raised their own bottle, then took a drink. Just in time because the light buzz from Shen's tequila was starting to wear off. Really, it was well past the time when they should have been topping themself up. "I need to find more of these though. I have some half-formed plan that involves getting a little drunk tonight.”

“If you did not have my attention already, that would have done the trick.” Kurt playfully leaned in like he and Duo were sharing a secret. “What is this plan? I have a weakness for mischief.”

"Well, up until right this moment it really was mostly just about getting drunk, maybe finding some people to flirt with, but!" Duo took a moment to appreciate the sudden closeness of the handsome boy. "You just said the magic word. Mischief needs to happen.”

Wundebar!” Kurt replied, grinning in roguish humor and anticipation. “Not to undervalue drinking and flirting, but mischief is much better. What do you have in mind?”

"Not a thing yet." Duo took a long sip of their cooler as they looked around the room, hoping for an idea. "Are we looking for a specific target or are we after general chaos?”

Kurt mirrored Duo with a slow sip as he perused the party. “General chaos. Nothing that will embarrass anyone, or hurt their feelings.”

"Agreed. There's no fun to be had in hurting people. We do have midnight coming up... It could have something to do with that. Cut the power? I don't suppose your powers would be useful?”

“I promised to meet someone at midnight,” Kurt replied, his brow furrowed and his mouth turned down in a frown of concentration.

"That girl you were dancing with earlier?" Duo smiled, but could feel the chance for mischief slipped from their grasp. They were no competition for a beautiful girl.

Kurt’s smile was fond. “Yes. Jeanne-Marie.” He’d had so much fun dancing and laughing with her. It had been the best part of his night. “Have you had an opportunity to dance tonight?”

"Not yet, but I'm sure I will soon enough." They took another drink of the cooler. "With enough of these, I'll be asking everyone for a dance!”

Kurt offered a hand. “Would you allow me the honor of being your first dance tonight?”

Oh my. Despite what they'd just said this was entirely unexpected. " With me? Or there on the dance floor? Where everyone can see?"

“That is the idea,” Kurt said with a chuckle.

This school was different from home where this sort of thing was an invitation to violence. Duo'd been here for almost a month and they'd seen enough to feel comfortable flirting with guys and wearing what they choose, but dancing was another step beyond all that. Still, Duo nodded and offered Kurt their hand and if it shook just a touch, that would disappear as soon as Kurt took it.

Kurt closed his hand around Duo’s. “Do not worry. I promise I will not step on your feet,” he joked to try and calm Duo’s nerves, then lead them out onto the dance floor.

"Thank you," Duo said as he followed Kurt. "That's not my worry though. I'm imagining ghosts I think.”

Kurt had thought that might be the case. “You will be alright, but, if you start to feel uncomfortable, let me know and we will stop dancing.”

Duo shook their head and smiled. "I don't think that will be a problem. I think it's time to dismiss those ghosts."
