Vex and Monica befriend each other and decide to put together a last minute Valentines Day party.
This school was so much better than Monica's old school, well, except for the lack of old friends. Otherwise she definitely preferred the teachers, the grounds, the activities... Sure, she didn't have much of a focus these days except for finding out how her mutation worked, but even that was almost welcome, a freedom she hadn't allowed herself in some time. A focus would come. She'd heard talk of a group of kids that did work that sounded something like what superheroes did and maybe that would be good, but she had time.
Right now though she had to study. She propped her textbook on her lap, put her feet up on the sofa in the lounge, and tried not to be distractied by the flow of students in and out of the room.
Vex wandered into the room with her laptop and flopped down on the couch adjacent to Monica. Trinket followed close and climbed up next to Vex. Usually she might ask if she was interrupting, but it was obvious Monica was studying, so Vex assumed the answer was ‘yes’ and tucked herself unobtrusively in the corner of the couch. She flipped the computer around to use like a tablet and pulled up a book.
When Trinket made a questioning rumble she tugged him into her lap and murmured, “Library rules, darling. People are studying.”
Monica eyed the bear out of the corner of her eye. A bear. In school. Maybe there were some things not to love about this place. But then it could be one of the shapeshifters. "Is that... a student?"
Vex looked thoughtfully at Trinket. “No, although he might actually enjoy class lectures more than my brother does. This is Trinket. My spirit companion and manifestation of my powers. Or something like that.” That was at least how Vex would spin it so that teachers wouldn’t complain about how often Trinket was out of the necklace these days.
"Right," Monica said with a smile. "Well, I'll introduce myself since I don't have any spirit companions to tell you about. I'm Monica."
Vex smiled back. “Hi Monica. I’m Vex.”
"Okay, I got to know, how is that-" Monica waved towards the bear- "a manifestation of your powers?"
Vex lifted the empty chain around her neck. “When he isn’t a bear he’s a charm. I kind of gave him life, and then he goes into stasis when he isn’t out like this.”
"But he is alive? And you gave him that?" This didn't sound like the mutant powers she'd been expecting. It sounded like magic and an unsettling magic at that.
“As far as anyone can tell, yes, he’s alive.” Vex rubbed Trinket’s head. “I don’t go around turning all the statues I find into magical creatures, mostly I stick elemental stuff.”
Alive or not, Monica was glad the bear seemed to be sticking in it's own space. She'd likely get used to it in time but right now, it was just a tad creepy to think about. "Very cool power. I don't quite understand it, but it's cool."
Vex pet Trinket. “What’s your magic power?”
"Well, I thought it was shooting energy at things but I had this incident when I was flying awhile back and checked in with Dr. McTaggert and it turns out I actually turn into energy, and then shoot it." It hadn't been exactly a pleasant thing to learn because, what happened to her normal body, but it was what it was and there was no way to change it.
“Oh wow. So it lets you fly?” Flying and blasting things sounded like great powers.
Monica nodded, unable to stop the grin that spread across her face. "That's the best part. Even if I had to give up every other aspect of my powers, if I just had the flying part left, I'd be happy. It's pretty amazing, especially since my control got better."
“Super jealous,” Vex said. “My brother can fly too. I really need to figure out a way to.”
"You do, but if you ever want to just go for a flight before you figure it out, let me know. I can take you up." Probably. Although if she was turning into energy when she flew, that might be a little tricky. Another question to go back to Dr. McTaggert with.
Vex bounced in her seat, jostling Trinket. “Oh, yes! That would fantastic.”
"Awesome. I just have to make sure that's a thing I can do that without roasting you or something. I think the school would frown on that." Monica smiled and closed up her textbook. Studying could come later, after she'd gotten to know Vex a little. "I only got my powers a few months ago so I'll still sorting things out and figuring out how they work."
Vex beamed. “I prefer unroasted. I’ve only had mine a couple months too. I’ve not burned anything down yet, but I did freeze half my room the first day here.”
"Oh boy." Monica snickered. "Do you have a roommate? That must have made her happy.”
“Fortunately no roommate then, so only Illyana witnessed the moment. And luckily we have an ice boy so he fixed it for me.”
"Wait a second, you don't have a roommate? I don't either." Monica smiled and lifted an eyebrow. "How did we get away with that when everybody else seems to have to shack up?"
Vex lifted Trinket. “Maybe it was due to showing up with a bear. The room just filled actually—my friend Keyleth finally got her arse here. She’s been on her way since December, but had some loose ends to tie up. How long have you been here, dear?”
There was a hint of disappointment on Monica's face when she heard about the roommate. She should consider it luck that she a room to herself, but that was nothing different from home. Besides, wasn't that supposed to be one of the key experiences of boarding school - getting to know a roommate? "Early December. Just in time to get shipped home for Christmas again."
“So we did show up around the same time.” Vex smiled apologetically. “Well, if you’re missing out on girls nights you’re welcome to hang out with Keyleth and I some night. We’re used to more people piled into a room. Also, our friend Pike isn’t here, and we’re vastly outnumbered by dicks now.”
Monica laughed. "I'd noticed. It's a sad state of affairs for someone who's not into dicks." Might as well toss that in. It wasn't like she'd been all that subtle about who she was into when she was hitting on Shen at New Year's. "But a girl's night might be fun. Maybe a party one of these days."
Vex smiled at Monica. “I would love to have another party. New Years was fantastic. Maybe we should set something up for the next holiday…” She made a face. “Only that’s Valentines Day. There’s already a gross amount of winged cupid in the air. Though, you can’t go wrong with excuses for chocolate. What do you think?”
"I'm in!" Oh god, was she in. "I don't care if it's Valentine's Day, it's an excuse for a party."
“Maybe it’s another one of those stolen pagan holidays. That might make it more fun.” Vex pulled her computer up and did a basic Internet search. “If no one else has started planning, I vote we jump on this. Should we post to the journals or something and let people know? I wonder if the school has a party budget. For the kid friendly parts.”
"Well, first thing first, Valentine was St. Valentine, and reliably Christian. Not that some parts of the holiday weren't nicked from other traditions, but he's definitely ours." But Monica was already moving into party planning. "Second, a little more help would be good. We do need a budget, a place, permission, a way to tell people, etc. and that's going to be a lot for just two of us, especially with regular school work."
“Oooh, you’re a planner.” Vex have Monica an appraising look. “I like you. Let’s ask the faculty what we need to do and then ask for some helpers. If we get a low reception, I can always force Percy to to help us. He’s probably overthinking his romantic plans for the holiday right now, but the boy loves to be overworked if we need extra hands or organizing.”
This was sounding better by the minute. "Awesome. We'll definitely need the extra hands, especially if we're decorating. I'd suggest people but... I really don't know too many yet."
Vex beamed. “Then I’ll have to make some introductions. That just won’t do.”
Monica laughed. "All right, now I know I've met the right person. I'm not anti-social or anything, it's just that there's so much work to do to get up to speed here. You arrived at the same time; how do you have a bunch of people to introduce me to?"
“I come with a twin, and he got here before me. Also, four members of my makeshift family turned out to be mutants and they’re all here now.” She chuckled. “I’m less focused on catching up on classes. This is slightly slower paced than the school I just came from, and my gap before that is so wide there’s no point in killing myself. It’ll level out by the end of the summer. Maybe.”
"Lucky. So I'm free to consider you my social life co-ordinator then?" She grinned and pulled her legs up onto the couch to tuck underneath her. Vex was definitely fun to talk to. Working on the party with her was something Monica was looking forward to.
“Are you willing to put yourself in my hands?” Vex asked with a coy smile.
Oh gosh. Monica found herself wishing that was flirting. "Absolutely. It's time I made a concerted effort to make a few more friends."
Vex winked. “Then after you’re done your studying we’ll get started. Come with me to dinner, I’ll introduce you to my friends.”
