After he heard that Magneto was shot, Billy finds Wanda outside the infirmary
It hadn’t taken long for news to spread that Magneto had been shot and the Brotherhood were at the school, Billy knew he needed to find Wanda. He felt like his heart was going to bust out of his chest from worry and he ran down the hall of the boy’s dormitory, not for the first time wishing that he had Tommy’s speed instead of his magic. He had no clue where Wanda would have gone or where the school would have taken her, so he decided to say fuck it and closed his eyes shut tight. He tried to think about the color of her hair, the way it curled a little at the ends, how her eyes crinkled a little when she smiled, the way her perfume had smelled when she leaned over to give Billy a hug and how her voice sounded.
“IwanttobewithWanda!IwanttobewithWanda!IwanttobewithWanda!”
In a flash he was gone.
Wanda'd stepped out of the room they'd set up in to wait and into the hall, and leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes. The whole day felt surreal, a series of disconnected images - a flatscan aiming a gun at her, watching in astonishment as it crumbled away, her father on the kitchen floor, apparently bleeding out. Alex, bleeding. The closed off expression on Pyro's face as he'd sat in the waiting room, his zippo in hand but apparently forgotten. Pietro's hand, tangled in hers. None of it seemed as if it could possibly fit together.
A flash of light, visible even through closed eyelids, caught her attention and her eyes popped open. And blinked, as she realized it wasn't Fatale or Illyana, but Billy. "Hey kiddo. New trick?" she asked tiredly, offering a faint smile.
He stumbled a little when his teleportation moved him a foot higher from the floor and he dropped, but he was able to right himself before quickly moving over to her. He gave her a quick once over before letting out a relieved sigh and hugged her tightly, wrapping his arms best he could around her.
“You’re okay...” He whispered, his voice wavering too much to go much louder.
Wanda blinked, surprised, and only belatedly remembered to hug him back. "Yeah, I'm fine," she assured him. "Not a mark on me." Which was bull, considering she was spattered with dirt from the fight, but there weren't any marks that mattered.
He took a few moments, let himself just be in her presence and let his brain catch up on the fact that nothing had happened to her before he pulled away. “Sorry, I just panicked. What happened? I heard...I heard he was shot.”'
Wanda let her smile fade. "Yeah. Fucking flatscan with a gun that shot plastic bullets. They've got him in surgery now."
“Plastic?” Billy asked, surprised that plastic could go through what Magneto was wearing and pierce the skin. Maybe it wasn’t the normal plastic he was thinking, like what nerf guns and such were made of, but something stronger. He watched her face intently and reached out to take her hand, squeezing it tight with his. “He’ll be okay. He’s been through worse, he is stronger than some stupid bullet.”
"He's supposed to be, anyway." Wanda shook her head. "Sorry. I just...I was disarming the fuckers. Apparently, I didn't do it fast enough."
“Don’t apologize.” Billy told her quickly, then frowned. “Wait...fuckers? As in plural? How many people exactly were there that were attacking you?”
"A convention-hall full? We were taking on an FoH rally. Unfortunately, they apparently staged the damn thing expecting we'd show." Wanda squeezed his hand, then let it go. "You mind if we sit down? I'm wiped."
“Yeah, Yeah.” Billy tried to look around for anything for her to sit on, but when he couldn’t find anything, so he slowly helped her slide to the floor. “Do you want me to get a chair? I could try summoning something.”
Though he wasn’t so sure how that would go.
"I'm fine with the floor, honestly." She smiled and rolled her eyes. "Also? Not old and decrepid yet, thanks. It's just - if you want the whole story? I'd rather be sitting for it."
“I didn’t say old, for the record.” Billy stated and slid down next to her. He crossed his legs and turned to towards her, but kept quiet so she could start when she was ready.
"Yeah, I know, I'm fucking with you." Wanda tilted her head into her hand. "Anyway, yeah. We heard the FoH was planning this huge rally in a convention center - too good to pass up, right? So we go in. But after a couple of minutes, we realize there's something weird. Usually they panic and run, which is cool because they're out of the way once they're out the door. But they're not panicking. And then they started pulling out guns."
She rubbed at her forehead and sighed. "And that was when all hell broke loose."
“Fuck.” Billy whispered, covering his mouth with his hands as he tried to think of how he would even handle that situation. He wouldn’t have been able to, not with out his powers going crazy again and he suddenly wondered how much Wanda had done. “What happened?”
"Too much, all at once." Wanda grimaced. "Have you ever been on a dance floor when you're trashed? A crowded one, I mean. And you feel like all you're seeing is snapshots, because there's so much going on that you can't really take it all in? It was like that, kind of. I mean, I know what I was doing - I was trying to get rid of as many of the guns as possible, while keeping an eye on everyone else as best I could. I remember yelling for Alex to drop some scaffolding and try to make a barrier - pretty sure he did. I didn't even realize until later that he'd been hit, and I'm still not sure if it happened then or earlier. I remember hearing Lance yelling to someone, but I didn't pay attention to who or what once I realized it wasn't to me. A lot of people were falling, that would've been Eileen. And then I saw someone aiming up, and I looked just in time to see my father start falling." She shook her head. "It all still seems pretty unreal."
Billy watched her for a moment, then slowly moved his arm around her shoulders and moved so she could rest her head on his shoulder because she looked exhausted. He hadn’t realized the FoH were that organized, enough to stage a rally that could bait the Brotherhood and ambush them. Everything was so messed up and she had said Alex had gotten hurt, which meant Tommy would be a ball of panic.
“I’m sorry, Wanda. I’m sorry you had to go through that.” No one should have to watch their father be shot in front of them, even if he was a crazy guy. “Do you need anything? Have you eaten?”
Wanda leaned back against his arm, appreciating the gesture, but didn't tilt her head in, just back against the wall so she could look up at the ceiling. "Really not hungry," she admitted. "I just needed a break - I should really get back inside." She jerked her head, just a little, towards the door she'd emerged from. "We've got everyone in there waiting, other than Alex and Fatale - he took a hit. The doctor with said she'd come tell us as soon as they knew anything."
“He got hit?” Billy asked quietly, his heart beating a little faster at the idea of the boy he had met being shot. “Is-How bad was he hit?”
"Not bad," Wanda forced a trace of what she hoped was a reassuring smile, despite not feeling it. He shouldn't have been hit, at all, and if she'd been faster, had better control, he wouldn't have been. "From what I saw, his arm might need a few stitches, but nothing serious."
“That’s good.” Billy nodded, not sure where this great sense of relief was coming from, but he figured it was because he didn’t want Tommy losing a close friend. He took a deep breath and looked at the door she had glanced at, hoping not for the first time that Magneto really was that strong. “Sorry if I’m keeping you from going back, just promise me you’ll get some rest?”
"Hey, which of us is supposed to be the parent, here?" Wanda joked, but smiled and nodded. "But yeah, promise." She looked at him, realizing he seemed shaken, too, and said quietly. "You want to come wait with us for a while?"
Billy smiled, watching the door for a moment before looking back at her a little uneasy. “Are you sure? I mean, I’m not part of the Brotherhood so won’t that make people feel weird?”
Wanda shrugged and got to her feet. "You're family. They'll understand." She smiled crookedly. "Illyana's in there with Pyro, if that makes you feel more comfortable about it."
“Yana is in there?” Billy pursed his lips a little in thought at that. Yana and Pyro were dating, where as he was just the reincarnated future kid of Wanda, but it would be nice to be with her during this whole thing and know what was happening with Magneto in real time. Billy gave a small nod and pushed to his feet as well. “Yeah. Yeah, I’d like to go with you.”
"Well, come on then." Despite the casual words, Wanda smiled, reached for his hand, and gave it a squeeze. She maybe wasn't quite as comfortable with him as she was with his brother (it was kind of weird, seeing a male version of herself when she looked at him) but he was a good kid. And family. Which, at the end of the day - especially today - was the important thing.
