Bobby takes a break from the pizza party to swing by the infirmary and meet his new roommate.

Kurt stuck a scrap of paper between the pages of the book Professor Xavier had lent him, and closed the book over. Though it was still early and tiredness had already begun to creep up upon him, he was still feeling better than he had in days. He wasn’t nauseous anymore and the headaches were mostly gone. He even had more energy and could make it through most days without needing a nap. It was, he’d been told, a surprisingly quick recovery given the amount of drugs that had been in his system. He honestly didn’t remember much about it, but Dr. MacTaggert and Nurse Friedlander had assured him that he would be out of the infirmary soon, though he’d still have to return weekly for therapy.

Kurt grimaced at the thought. He didn’t love the therapy sessions, but he was beginning to see why they were important. For how little of it he could clearly remember, his time in Jardine’s circus had left its mark. Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair and settled back into his pillows. It was alright. It would be alright. He was safe now, in a school with others like him. Things were going to get better.

Bobby'd waited for a while to see if his as yet unseen roommate was going to appear at the pizza party (because honestly, it was free food, who wouldn't?) then gave in and asked Ms. Friedlander whether or not he was coming.

Apparently, he wasn't, because he hadn't yet been released from the infirmary. Bobby'd pondered that for a while, then went over and grabbed a new plate, loaded it up with a few assorted pieces of pizza (one of them had to be right, right?) and made his way down to the infirmary and slipped inside.

"Hey, I've got a pizza delivery here for..." Bobby made a show of consulting an imaginary receipt, "Kurt Wagner? Is there anyone here by that name?"

Kurt perked at the voice, then even more at the mention of pizza. He leaned forward to peer past the curtain that partially obscured his bed. A boy, cute in a Hollywood boy-neat-door kind of way, stood in the middle of the infirmary with a plate piled high with slices of pizza. “That would be me,” he said.

"Which is good, because if it'd taken much longer to find you? I would have surrendered to temptation and eaten the pizza." Bobby grinned as he came over and extended the plate. "Ms. Friedlander didn't say anything about you being on an all liquid diet or contagious or anything, so I figured you might want some. I'm Bobby, by the way.”

Kurt accepted the plate with one fuzzy hand and extended the other for Bobby to shake. "A pleasure to meet you. You are to be my roommate, yes? Thank you for the pizza."

"Hey, no problem." Bobby took Kurt's hand (three fingers? Tommy hadn't mentioned that. Or the fur. Leave it to the dork to leave out the most interesting parts) and shook it, then plopped down in the guest chair next to the bed and grinned. "And yeah, your roommate. So, y'know, if you're scared off? You can get Ms. Friedlander to give you a medical excuse.”

“And what should I claim?” Kurt asked in amusement. “That I am allergic to skin, perhaps?” He put the plate on his lap and picked up the topmost slice of pizza. It was loaded with green peppers, onions, artichoke hearts, and mushrooms, and there was so much cheese that it oozed off the sides. His mouth watered at the sight of it and his heart did a giddy kick. His first American pizza! When he’d first been told he’d been going to America, it had been one of the things on his list to do.

"Mmm, pretty sure she's not gonna buy that." Bobby pretended to consider it seriously, then grinned. "I'd go with the cold irritating your sinuses or something. My mom always complained about that every winter.”

Kurt shook his head. “She will not believe it. I am from Bavaria. We have very cold winters.” He took a bite of the pizza and—oh, lieber Gott im Himmel—his eyes closed as he savored the taste. It was delicious.

"Yeaah, but that's cold outside. Not inside." Bobby's grin tilted and he held out his hand. A moment later, a snowball appeared. "It happens. Sometimes." Not as often as it had a couple of years earlier, granted, but...disclaimers were probably a good thing.

Kurt’s eyes went wide. “Incredible!” he said once he’d swallowed the food in his mouth. “That is quite the trick, mein Freund.” He poked at the snowball with his free hand. “I call dibs if there is ever a school snowball fight.”

"I think you automatically get dibs by virtue of being my roommate." Bobby tossed the snowball from one hand to the other, then concentrated and made it disappear. Grinning, he shrugged self-consciously. "So, when are you getting out of here?”

"Soon, I am told. I cannot wait." Kurt chuckled. "I am going a little stir-crazy in here to be honest.” He took another big bite of pizza.

"I bet. I was stuck in the house for a couple of weeks when I first manifested - everyone thought I'd caught a massive case of the flu, I couldn't get warm. I thought I was going to go nuts, and that was with a game system." Bobby's forehead furrowed. "Speaking of, I've got a DS in the room somewhere. If you want something to do, I can dig it out and bring it down.”

Kurt nodded and swallowed a mouthful of cheese and vegetables. “I would appreciate that, thank you. I have never played on one before.” Stefan had had an old Gameboy Color that he’d found in a flea market. They’d played it until the screen wouldn’t turn on anymore.

"Seriously?" Belatedly realizing how that sounded, Bobby blushed and waved it aside. "Probably not a big thing in Germany, huh? Sorry - I'm a video game addict - I figure everyone else is, too. I'll dig it out.”

Kurt gave Bobby an amused look. “We have video games in Germany. The game systems were just always a little more than we could afford.” He finished the piece of pizza and picked up another, this one pepperoni and just as cheesy.

"Aaaand once again I stick my foot in my mouth." Bobby grinned crookedly and shrugged. "I have a knack. I keep telling people it's one of my best skills, but no one seems impressed.”

“I am very impressed,” Kurt said and made a show of leaning forward so he could glance over the edge of the bed. “It is a very big foot.”

Bobby let out a whoop of laughter, then grinned and nodded. "Definitely. It's a gift, man, I tell you. You can look forward to many more demonstrations, I promise. Anything else you need? Food, clothing - descriptions of the hot girls upstairs at the party? I'll spare you my rendition of the welcome speech.”

Kurt considered the question. “Do you have a computer I can borrow? Professor Xavier gave me a gift card I can use to buy clothes, but I have no way of getting them and this,” he plucked the t-shirt with the school’s logo that he was wearing, “is all I have right now.”

"You mean, you're not just showing school solidarity? I'm crushed. I was going to nominate you for a seat on the Student Council." Bobby grinned, then made a face and shook his head. "All I've got is the desktop up in our room, but I can borrow you a laptop from the library if you want?" After all, it'd be a lot easier than transporting the PC down to the infirmary. And probably a lot more comfortable to use, for that matter.

“That would be great, thank you.” Kurt grinned. “I owe you one. You are saving me from being the smelly kid in class. Or the naked kid. Really, you are doing the whole school a favor.”

"I'm your roommate. It's called self-preservation, man." Bobby grinned back, then shrugged. "I'll see if I can dig up some stuff from the clothing stash they had me raid for Shepherd, too. It's not anything great, but it'll tide you over. Just to avoid the whole naked kid thing, though if you decide to go that route? Let me know so I can take pictures of people's reactions.”

“Ach, I could not do that to you, mein Freund.” Kurt put a hand to his chest as he continued to joke, “One look at me and no one in the school would look at you. That would not be fair.”

Oh, he liked this guy! Bobby snorted and waved that aside. "Pleeaase. I'll have you know no one's looking already." He paused, his forehead furrowing. "Yeeaaah, that maybe didn't come out quite how I'd intended." Except, of course, that it had, so Bobby grinned. "True, but still. Not quite right.”

Kurt laughed. “But true,” he replied, teasing.

"Sadly, yes." Bobby hung his head for a moment, then looked up and grinned. "But hey, on a brighter note? There are two more girls here now than there were a couple of days ago. The odds are improving.”

“You are making an awful lot of assumptions about sexuality, mein Freund,” Kurt noted with amusement. “The odds may very well be improving for someone else.”

Bobby shrugged and offered a crooked smile. "If so, good for them. But I'm holding out hope, anyway.”

Kurt patted Bobby’s hand. “It is good to think positive,” he said with a teasing sincerity, humor making his eyes gleam.

"Especially when you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about?" Bobby countered, quoting...something, he couldn't remember what, offhand.

“That is the most important time,” Kurt replied, grinning.

"So it's good that I'm pretty much always positive." Bobby grinned back, then jerked his head towards the door. "I'm gonna go see if I can get my hands on that laptop, Stinky Boy. Enjoy the pizza.”

Kurt playfully saluted Bobby. “I will see you later.”

Bobby returned the salute, and headed out the door, smiling. Apparently, he hadn't done too badly in the roommate sweepstakes.
