Jubilee and Lil - November 23
Lil's self-imposed sulk after her forum blowup meets the force of Jubilee's stubbornness. Lil never had a chance.
Lil's afternoon was pretty much the same as her morning, typing on the new Shaw Industries laptop that now lived on her desk. She was hungry and thought about a quick run to the kitchen, but decided to wait until the big dinner started when surely-to-god she'd have the kitchen to herself. In the meantime, it was the boring work of data entry. That wasn't such a horrible thing, after all, every keystroke meant more money. Plus, it seemed to clear her head. There had been too much mental clutter lately -none of it fun - since that day with Simon, and it had only gotten worse since he and his boyfriends had decided to tell the world who they were. Data entry and knitting: she'd managed to make her world pretty friggin' narrow over the last week.
Okay, enough was enough!
Jubilee stood outside Lil's door, wearing a bright orange sweatshirt that bore the legend 'Gobble, Gobble, Gobble' in white letters and a picture of a panicked looking turkey. She hadn't hardly seen Lil since the whole stupid thing on the forums, and while she got that sometimes people wanted alone time, Thanksgiving was not the time for alone time. It was the time for family, and turkey, and pie, and...right. Knocking now.
"C'mon Lil! They're gonna start dinner!" she called out without waiting for the older girl to reply.
Lil groaned and went over to the door. No point in ignoring Jubilee, that was one thing she'd learned since they'd started talked talking. She opened the door. "Look, thanks for the enthusiasm, but I'm not going. I've got work to do."
"Oh pleeeeaaase. It's Thanksgiving, Lil. NOBODY works on Thanksgiving." Jubilee rolled her eyes, then paused. "Well, except for people in retail, I guess. And, y'know, ones who work in restaurants. Or movie theatres. Or gas stations. But whatever!" She planted her hands on her hips and looked up at Lil in challenge. "NOT people who are doing data entry stuff on computers. It's a HOLIDAY."
"I'm Canadian. I already did Turkey Day weeks ago. Besides, "Lil waved a hand at the sweats and hole-ridden t-shirt she was wearing. "I'm not going out in public in this."
"Who cares if you're Canadian? You're living here, you hafta celebrate here. It's like, a rule or something." Jubilee waved dismissively at her clothes. "And you've got time to change if you're quick. I'll wait."
Well, this wasn't getting her anywhere, so she waved Jubilee in. Better than arguing about it in the hall. "Look, I don't want to go. I'm pretty sure there are people there who don't want to see me, so can we just make everyone happy on this?"
"Nuh uh," Jubilee disputed as she came inside. Score, she was in - it'd be downhill from here! "It's Thanksgiving. That always means having dinner with people who you'd really rather not see and who'd rather not see you. But that doesn't matter, because there are people who do wanta see you, and who you wanta see, and stuff to be thankful about. Plus turkey. And pie."
"Jesus." Pie. God, she was hungry, and pie sounded good. The rest was... confusing. But pie. "Fucking pie. You couldn't just go and bring me some stuff back, could you?"
Jubilee crossed her arms over her chest and fixed Lil with a look. "No how, no way."
She was going to win, Lil was sure of that. If it had been anyone else knocking on her door, there'd be a way to beg them off. Nolan could be given sad eyes, Tamara could be pissed off, Nick could be assured... but she didn't know Jubilee well enough to get around her stubbornness. She certainly didn't know the girl well enough to launch into any of the reasons beyond just plain embarrassment that she'd rather not see certain people today and without that, she simply looked like she was sulking. And maybe she really was sulking to some degree. Whatever. Jubilee didn't look like she was budging, and Lil didn't have the energy to keep saying no. Besides, pie.
"Alright, I'll get changed. And I have to shut down the computer." Lil slipped into her desk chair and began to exit out of programs.
"Awesome." Jubilee grinned and went over to plop down on Lil's roommate's bed, already pulling out her phone. "I'll just wait. Just ignore me," she suggested, waving any objections aside preemptively as she turned her attention to her screen. Because yeeaaah, no way she was leaving without Lil. The other girl would just take it as an opportunity to hole up some more.
Lil shut the laptop. She wasn't sure who would want to sneak onto that laptop here, but she sure as shit didn't want to risk Shinobi's trust, or her paycheque, by leaving it on. She stood up and went to her closet. "Jeans and a sweatshirt is fine, right?"
"Hey, it's what I'm wearing. No one said formal," Jubilee pointed out, looking up from her game.
She pulled jeans from the shelf, but none of her favourite shirts were clean. Well, there was one top, that floaty purple tank she wore for pjs... fuck it, right? She'd been sulking. She'd been hiding out and sulking, and if she was going to get dragged out to some fake Thanksgiving thing and everyone was going to see her, they might sell see her. Lil grabbed her green sequined flats and pulled out the purple top, holding both up for Jubilee to see. "This do?"
"OMG, where'd you get those shoes?" Jubilee sat up and grinned. "Those are seriously amazing. I like the top, too," she decided with a nod, "but I'm seriously in love with the shoes. Except that you need to be wearing them now so we can go eat."
"Jesus you're demanding." Lil mumbled. She stepped behind the wardrobe door to make an impromptu changing room because, well, maybe girls were always stripping down to their bras in front of each other on American TV, but that was not her thing. As she finished, she rethought the whole making-an-entrance thing and grabbed her cardigan. "Done. Oh, and the shoes... I don't know, online somewhere. They were cheap and sparkly so that's the important thing, right?"
"I gotta see if I can find some." Because yep. Cheap and sparkly for the win, definitely. Jubilee got to her feet and tilted her head to review Lil's outfit. "It'd look better without the sweater," she decided. "But it's all good! Ready to go?"
"Nope. I'm ready to sit back down and the time alone, but I'm pretty certain there's no way in hell you're gonna let that happen."
"Nope!" Jubilee agreed cheerfully. "You can't be alone on Thanksgiving. That'd just be sad. Besides," she grinned. "Pie."
"Pie," Lil repeated, "Pretend Thanksgiving." National pride wouldn't let Lil concede that this holiday was the real thing. "But yeah, Pie." Pie. If she kept repeating it, like a mantra, maybe she could keep the embarrassment over the whole forum mess away and enjoy the meal.
"Pie." Hey, whatever worked. Still feeling smug, Jubilee latched onto Lil's arm and half urged, half tugged her towards the door. Mission accomplished! Or, well, it would be once she got her downstairs, anyway.
