Kitty and Bobby go on their not-a-date to the Salem Center fireworks!
Kitty had almost decided to hide in her room and pretend she'd come down with a cold or something. What had she been thinking, planning this with Bobby. ALONE. Sure, if it was with Illyana and Speedy-Face, it might have been fine, but now, they're walking down the road to the Salem Center park and Kitty didn't know what the heck to say to him. Let alone how to act. All she kept doing was fiddling with her phone, like it would somehow save her. Siri, what do you say to a boy on a not-date?
Bobby, for his part, wasn't quite sure what he'd gotten himself into. Granted, asking Kitty to the fireworks had sounded like a great idea the night before, but he was getting the definite impression that she was wishing she hadn't agreed to come. Which wasn't surprising - he was still surprise she'd said yes to begin with - but it left them in an uncomfortable silence he wasn't altogether sure how to break.
He was going to have to, though. If only because the uncomfortable silence was starting to drive him nuts. "So, I wonder if your roommate and Shepherd actually made it to Florida?" That was a nice, generic subject, right?
"Illyana," she told him with a little smile. "And honestly? I wouldn't put it past them. With his speed and her ability to teleport, who the heck knows, you know?"
"She teleports? Tommy didn't mention teleporting." Bobby grinned. Talking achieved, mission accomplished. "Of course, I don't think he ever mentioned her name, either, so there's that."
"I'm not sure if she can do it successfully," Kitty admitted. "I've never seen her do it. I mean. She even said that she can time-travel, which, well, is kind of impossible, so."
"Why impossible? I mean, pretty much everything any of us do is impossible, if you look at it that way," Bobby observed.
"Oh, I can explain away a lot of the mutations at Xavier's," Kitty told him, waving a hand. "Even mine. But time-travel? It defies the laws of physics."
Bobby's forehead furrowed. "And passing through solid objects doesn't? Or Tommy's speed?" He shrugged. "I mean, I haven't had Physics yet, but those seem pretty science-defying."
"Certain particles move through solid objects every day - or move at close to the speed of light. It's just a matter of discovering how the X-gene has helped us tap into the way they move," Kitty explained. "But time? The implications to causality...I can't even."
"Maybe she's full of it? Or," Bobby held up a hand to forestall any protests, "maybe she thinks she is, because - I don't know, it takes longer to reappear than she expects or something?"
Kitty pursed her lips. "Maybe. Or maybe physics is about to get rewritten by mutants, and I'm terrified by what comes after."
"Hey, you're genius girl," Bobby said, offering a grin as he nudged her arm with his elbow. "You'll just do the rewriting, and it'll all be fine."
She smiled sideways at him. "Flatterer."
Bobby shook his head. "Just the truth, ma'am." He grinned more brightly. "Just make sure that when you rewrite the laws of Physics, you define them in small words? Think of the future Physics students."
"How about I promise to tutor you instead?" she offered, drifting a little more closely to him. Okay, the not-date was way less awkward now.
"What, do I look like someone who needs tutoring?" Bobby asked. He managed to hold onto his astonished expression for about five seconds, then grinned. "Because I should. I'm totally someone who needs tutoring."
"I bet you have a few good subjects," Kitty grinned. "You don't look like the kind of guy who's failing out of school, anyway."
"If I admit I'm not, do I forfeit the right to tutoring?" Bobby countered.
"Oh, we could find something to tutor you on. Like on decision making when your friend decides to crash a girl's dorm in the middle of the night," she laughed.
"I dunno, I'm thinking that was a pretty decent idea, actually." Bobby laughed, then shrugged crookedly. "I mean, Shepherd got to see your roommate, I got to see you, and we got free snacks. What's to complain about?" Well, near-death by ice collapse, granted, but that hadn't been his fault. Mostly.
Kitty gave him a look, like she knew exactly what he was thinking. Then she shrugged. "At least I got to find out that I can phase other people. That could be really useful in the future."
"Well, if you need a test dummy, I'm your guy," Bobby offered, grinning, then let the grin fade and eyed her with concern. "You were okay, right? I was worried about you going back up - you looked kinda shaky. No offense."
She shook her head. "That happened the first few times I started phasing, too. I think it's just, you know, me stretching my ability. The stronger it gets, that shouldn't happen."
"Hey, I wasn't trying to say there was something wrong," Bobby disavowed. "I mean, it happened to me too. Still does, sometimes." He offered a crooked smile and shrugged. "Just, dizzy and stairs? Not usually a good combination."
"Oh," she smiled. "Yeah, I'm fine. You get it too?"
"Ooooh yeah. A couple of weeks ago? I damn near passed out before Scott showed up," Bobby admitted, then looked awkward. Right. Not a great topic of conversation.
Kitty tilted her head a little. "Scott showed up to get you? Not the Professor?"
Bobby made a face, then shrugged. It was going to come out sooner or later anyway, he might as well get it overwith. "No, definitely Scott. The Prof wouldn't have blown a hole in the wall of Port Jefferson's police station." He grinned a little. "Well, not without a really big gun, anyway. Which is a hell of a mental image, you've gotta admit. Especially if you throw in a Rambo headband."
He was joking, but she wasn't smiling. Not even a little bit. "Police station? Bobby..."
"No, it's okay," he assured her. "I mean..." he sighed and pushed his hand back through his hair, then took a deep breath and exhaled. "An asshole was hassling a girl I knew. I sort of accidentally froze him." He looked over at her awkwardly. "He was okay. They just had to thaw him out."
And that was kind of okay, Kitty thought. She probably would have done the same thing. "But why would Scott break a hole in the wall and get you out? Are you - are you a fugitive now?"
"I don't think so. I mean, they hadn't pressed charges or anything - I was just in protective custody." He kicked at a stone on the road, and followed it with his eyes. "Scott said they needed to get me out of there before they moved me somewhere else. Or, y'know, the mob got through."
"The mob?!" Kitty breathed, turning to put herself in his path, eyes wide.
"Yeah, well, it was a pretty small mob as mobs go." Bobby quirked a trace of a smile. "Port Jefferson's a pretty small place."
Kitty got the feeling that he joked about everything, and that maybe the mob wasn't as small as he made it out to be. She'd had such an easy time of it, manifesting her power and coming to Xavier's...it was painful to realize not everyone had had it so easy. "Yeah? Well, then Salem Center's a step up, right?" she tried.
Relieved, Bobby's smile widened just a little. "Yeah. I mean, if Salem Center wanted to form a mob, I'm pretty sure it would be a lot more respectable. And, y'know, not led by Mrs. Tupperman waving her walker." Which, okay, was an exaggeration, but she'd probably been there. Yappy little dog and all.
She shook her head and smiled, then hooked her arm in his, starting back in the direction of the park. "If any mob came after you, I'd just phase you into the nearest comic book store or something, and we could just wait til they got tired and went home."
"Kitty Pryde, you're my heeero," Bobby quipped, his mouth quirking up as he quoted Cameron in Ferris Bueller. And in a way, she was - he wasn't 100% sure what he'd expected when he told her (outright rejection came to mind as the most likely reaction), but offers of protection definitely weren't it.
In any case, he felt a whole lot...lighter, he guessed, than he had at any time in the past week. Plus hey. Cute girl on his arm. For the first time in the last week, he honestly felt like he could deal with this.
She laughed and tugged him on. "Come on, dork, we're going to miss the show."
