Ororo and Jeanne-Marie, October 12

Ro and JM share an exhilarating flight and are now friends okay.

Jeanne-Marie whizzed past the lake in a blur, then slowed to catch her breath--and her power. If she wanted to maximize her speed, she needed to work on bursts, so that was her idea today. That and enjoying a nice fall flight. The colors were beautiful out here, and seeing them from above made it that much more amazing, like one huge painting that moved and changed with her.

Ororo often went flying for the sake of it, but today she had also been mapping the grounds, trying to find the best place for the wild plants she wanted to introduce on the grounds. It was a personal project she had decided on for no other reason than she missed the connection to nature she had felt every day on the plains of the Kilimanjaro. She was heading back to the mansion - by way of the air, of course - when she spotted a fellow flyer by the lake, and changed her course slightly to head over, the winds she controlled carrying her over.

The first thing Jeanne-Marie noticed about the other student in the air was her hair. It was amazing. of course, it was Jean's roommate, she knew right away--and she'd been dying to talk to her! Jeanne-Marie whizzed in her direction and shouted a "Hello there!" on the breeze, hair flying behind her.

"Hi," Ororo replied with a smile, directing the winds to take her closer, so they wouldn't have to shout so much. "You're - Jeanne-Marie?" She thought that she had pronounced that right; she had met quite a few people with French names before coming here, the remnants of colonization.

Jeanne-Marie was inexplicably pleased that this beautiful girl knew her name. "That's right! And you're Ororo. I've talked to your roommate, but not you." She pulled up to a stop near Ororo, hovering in the air. "I love that we can talk up here!"

"It is nice to meet other flyers," Ororo confirmed. The other girl was so full of enthusiasm that it would have been difficult not to smile as they talked. "How do you do it?"

"I'm not sure exactly," Jeanne-Marie admitted. She held her arms out to the side, a purely mental thing that made her feel like she was steadier when holding still in the air. "Something about kinetic energy and how I charge molecules? I can also move fast and make light.

"What about you?"

"The winds." Ororo's own arms were held a little to the side, a habit she had gotten into as she first learned to fly, and she hadn't yet thought to try and shake. "I can control the weather. This is one of the perks." And it explained why her eyes were currently solid white, as always when actively using her mutation.

"So you... tell the wind to lift you!" That was so. Cool. "And you can--make the clouds move so the sun can shine? Or the rain come?"

"Yes," Ororo confirmed with a small smile. Everyone seemed to be so impressed with her powers, and she could understand why. They were amazing. As were most other students'.

"That must feel amazing," Jeanne-Marie said with a sigh. "I love the rain. And the sun. I can't imagine having a real connection to them."

"It's like a whole other sense, really," Ororo admitted. It would be difficult not to feel connected to nature, even after growing up in a city.

"I can't imagine, but I wish I could." Jeanne-Marie smiled. "Am I interrupting? I was just doing some exercises to control my speed in the air, but I'm done now."

Ororo shook her head. "I was getting back when I saw someone else flying. I wanted to see who it was. Who you were."

"Shall we fly together? To the edge of the woods, fast?" Jeanne-Marie's grin was a little wild.

"From what I saw, my fast won't be nearly as fast as yours," Ororo warned her, although her small smile showed that she did not mind. It was more of a warning to Jeanne-Marie than anything else.

"It will be fast enough!" Jeanne-Marie promised, excited. "I love flying with company!" She kept smiling, forcibly not thinking about why that was a little rarer today than it used to be.

Ororo nodded. "Let's go."

Jeanne-Marie took off at a speed most could keep up with, laughing out loud, hair flying behind her. She tried to feel for the wind especially--she usually cut right through it and enjoyed it, but didn't give it much mind other than that. She wanted to see if she could tell what Ororo was doing with it.

Ororo was smiling as she followed suit, a smile bolstered by Jeanne-Marie's laughter. A few winds were clearly focused on her, keeping her in the air and propelling her forward all at once.

It was strange, now Jeanne-Marie was paying attention, but she could feel the wind moving in odd ways. How remarkable, to have that much power--and Ororo seemed like such a gentle person. Jeanne-Marie sped up, watching the girl next to her and grinning hugely.

That was an infectious grin, and it stretched Ororo's smile into something wider. She pushed the winds harder, faster, and laughed at the sheer joy of pushing herself, and flying with someone.

"I can feel it!" Jeanne-Marie shouted, though now they were moving too fast for conversation to be a thing. There was only the wild feeling of speeding through the air together. The best feeling!

Only a few moments later, they were reaching the edge of the woods, and Ororo slowed down, grinning over at Jeanne-Marie. "Back to the mansion?"

Jeanne-Marie nodded. "I wish we could go on forever, but we should! Ready?"

"Go," Ororo replied, and propelled herself forward with a new grin.

Again, Jeanne-Marie paced herself with her new friend--for that's what they were now, no denying it. This was the kind of flight that could only lead to good things. The best things. It passed in a rush of giddiness, hair in the wind and laughter in the air.

When they touched down again, Jeanne-Marie was breathless with joy. "I wish everyone could feel that good!" she said.

"And that is why I like taking people up with me," Ororo confirmed, her grin wide in the face of Jeanne-Marie's enthusiasm.

"Oh, me too." Jeanne-Marie twisted her hair around in her hand to tame it and settled it over one shoulder. "I love sharing it with my friends. And everyone here is so nice--have you settled in?"

"Very nicely," Ororo confirmed. "I was lucky, with my roommate."

"I love Jean," Jeanne-Marie declared. "She's so gorgeous and smart. When I met her, I instantly wanted to be her friend."

"She has that way about her," Ororo agreed, the warmth of her affection tinting her voice.

"Doesn't she just? There's something so warm about her." Jeanne-Marie sighed happily. "My roommate is wonderful too--and she flies. Do you know Shen?"

"Not very well," Ororo replied with a shake of her head. Not that she knew much of anyone here very well yet, but she had not talked with the winged girl much. "She seems very... intense." The small smile that accompanied that statement made it clear it wasn't a criticism.

Jeanne-Marie giggled. "She is. It suits me though, since I have my moments. Mostly I'm happy, but, well." She tried not to think of her brother. "We all have our days."

"We do," Ororo agreed after a beat. She gave Jeanne-Marie a small smile. "But on those days, flying helps."

"Always!" Jeanne-Marie laughed again. "Now I'm hungry, though. Do you want to go find food with me?"

"Let's do that." Ororo nodded, and headed for the front door, holding it open for Jeanne-Marie.

"I'm so glad I ran into you in the sky today, Ororo." Jeanne-Marie brushed her finger over Ororo's arm as she passed.

"Let's do it more often," Ororo agreed as she followed after Jeanne-Marie.
