Kurt goes to see Simon about belatedly joining the fencing club.
After an excessive amount of indecision, Kurt had finally settled on joining the fencing club. He’d waffled on it for reasons he didn’t even know since Simon’s post had first gone up until it had finally come down to one, vital fact—He missed fencing. It had been enough to banish his nameless reservations. Besides, after Simon’s recent announcement, Kurt thought Simon might be in need of another friend or a listening ear.
The fencing club was meeting today if Kurt remembered correctly, so he made his way down to the gym dressed in work-out clothes similar to what he would have worn for rehearsals at the circus. He pushed the door open and went inside, searching for Simon or anyone else from the club.
It was early enough before the club started that Simon was there alone, setting equipment out and making an inventory of what he had. It was possible with the influx of new students that there might be more people interested. The past few weeks, it had really just been him, Tessa, and Terry, but Warren stopped in every now and again.
When he heard the doors, he looked up, a small smile touching his lips. “Kurt."
Kurt brightened at the sight of Simon. “Hallo, Simon,” he greeted warmly as he crossed the room to him. “I am here for the fencing club. I hope I am not too late?”
"Early, actually. You decided to join us?" Simon asked curiously, setting one of the practice swords down on a bench.
“Yes! I have missed fencing. I hope it is not too late to join? I will understand if it is, though,” Kurt replied.
"Kurt, there are only three of us that show up regularly. Of course you're welcome to join," Simon smiled sideways. "Maybe we'll each have a training partner now.”
Kurt grinned. “Excellent! I am excited to begin.” He gestured to the fencing gear Simon had laid out. “I do not have my own gear. It is too expensive for my family to ship it from Germany.”
"There's plenty of gear here for you. Or, if you like, I can buy you a new set to keep here," Simon told him.
Kurt’s eyes went wide at the offer. “No,” he said quickly. “That is generous of you to offer, but, bitte, I could not ask you to do that. The loaner equipment is more than good enough for me. It is perfect.”
Simon started to argue, then switched gears, nodding. "I don't know what style you're used to.”
“The saber mostly, but I have used a foil too,” Kurt replied. “Before I left home I was trying to learn how to fence with my tail.”
Simon's eyes lit up. "Saber. So am I. Although admittedly not with my tail.”
Kurt laughed at the joke. “I would have been impressed if you were.”
"I'd love to spar with you, though," Simon smiled. "I mean, not right now, but however frequent you might like. It's one of the only ways I've found to relieve stress.”
“I would love to. It has been awhile since I have fenced, though, so I may not prove to be much of a challenge,” Kurt replied.
Simon quirked a smile. "We can work on that.”
Kurt grinned in anticipation. "Want to work on it now?"
The smile grew a bit, and Simon nodded. "Absolutely."
