Vaxildan arrives and Illyana shows him a good time. In Limbo.

Vaxildan opened the door, still casting a weirded out look back at the headmaster - who was weird, right? When a posh telepath came to pick you up at the airport and started going on about learning and talents and something called a 'Danger Room', it got a little weird.

That's why he wasn't looking where he was going as he left the bloke's office and ran right into a girl waiting outside, cursing softly as he grabbed at her shoulders to make sure he didn't hurt her or anything. "Fuck. Fuck, you alright?" he asked with a soft British accent.

The boy was at least half a foot taller than she was, with long, dark hair and sharp cheekbones, giving him an almost ethereal look. He was dressed in ripped black jeans, scuffed boots, and a black t-shirt that had a few too many holes in it (much to his father's dismay), and for all of that, could have fit in just fine in a street gang or behind a diner smoking a joint. There was an indecipherable tattoo on the inside of his right wrist, too - stiff letters in black ink. Instead of a street gang though, he was apparently a mutant, staring at this gorgeous blond with a quiet appreciation.

"Yeah. Y'know, no one warned me that tour guiding was a full impact sp-" Illyana cut off as she looked up (way up) at the guy standing in front of her. Who looked - well, she couldn't say he looked like the typical Xavier's student, even when you threw in the British guy she'd picked up in a warehouse the week before. "Oh. Hey. Umm, yeah, I'm fine," she stammered.

Yes. Yes, you are, he thought, but just cocked a little grin at her. "You're the tour guide, then?"

"Tour guide, new student delivery service...pretty much you name it, I'm doing it this week." She wrinkled her nose, then grinned. Actually, it didn't seem quite so big a punishment as it had earlier that morning. "I'm Illyana, by the way. You're..." she frowned a little, trying to remember what the Professor had told her earlier, but she hadn't really been paying attention. "Vax...something?" she guessed.

"Vax is fine," he smirked softly. "My name is kind of a beast. Yours, on the other hand, is beautiful."

"Pretty much everyone just calls me Yana," she admitted, her face warming. "The whole thing's kind of a tongue-tangler."

"Vaxildan is worse, trust me," he told her. He'd even decided to drop the apostrophe in his name on his admission forms. It was all just very hard for other kids to work out. 'Vax' was always easier.

"It sounds kinda like something out of that movie with the wizards and the hobbits," Illyana admitted. She grinned, a little. "At least it's definitely original?"

"Something like that," Vax agreed. "My asshole of a father is French and apparently thought naming me and my twin sister with fucking odd, long names that mirror each other was a wonderful idea."

"Do I want to ask what your sister's name is?" Illyana grinned a little. "Yeah, I do."

"She got the better end of the deal," he rolled his eyes. "Vex'ahlia. Vax and Vex."

"That's actually kind of cool," she admitted, and grinned. "Anyway, did you want the grand tour? And did you want to dump anything in your room first?"

"Room last," he decided. "And tour, sure, but what I really want to know is whether this place is really what it says, or if it isn't some kind of asshole asylum for powered kids. Because fuck that."

Illyana stared at him for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Okay, that? That was awesome. But no. While I'm pretty sure some of the kids belong in an asylum, it's actually a school. Believe me, I've got the crappy grades on the homework to prove it." She gestured for him to follow her. "Anything you particularly want to see?"

"To be honest, I was kind of hoping the classes were a myth, too," Vax sighed. School. He hadn't been to school in...years. The headmaster had said something about a test, but Vax already knew he was going to fail. He sucked at school even when he was attending. "Dealer's choice? Where's the food? Where do the other kids group? Who should I watch out for?"

"Food first," Illyana confirmed, and started heading there "Two choices, cafeteria and kitchen - I can't cook, so I usually go with the cafeteria, but not everyone does. Plus the kitchen's always open, and the cafeteria isn't. People mostly seem to group in the rec room - I'll point that out. And you should probably watch out for me," she admitted, "though Inu-Yasha's the one who'd be voted most likely to rip out your throat. He's pretty cool, though." She eyed him curiously. "Do you mind if I ask what you do?"

"Right, well, I wanted to let you puff your chest a bit before I went and blew you away with my incredible awesome abilities," Vax winked. "You first."

Illyana's eyebrows rose and she grinned evilly. "Chronospatial teleporter and demon sorceress. You?"

Vax opened his mouth...then closed it. He wasn't even sure what that was. Beyond the demon sorceress part, which was, well...strange, but oddly awesome. Well, if she could drop names, he could use the one the headmaster used for him, right? "Umbrakinetic," he told her, flashing a smile.

"That's-" Illyana paused, then laughed and shook her head. "I'm going to just admit I have absolutely no idea what that means?"

"Fuck it, me neither," Vax shrugged. "Old bloke back there just gave me the diagnosis. You ask me, I'm a shadow master."

"Okay, now that's cool." Illyana grinned. "Show me something?"

Vax glanced around. It was a bit early in the day to be playing around with his power - sunlight streaming in and all, but there were some shadows here and there. Like that hallway right there. He nodded at her and walked into the hallway, then seemed to just melt into the dimly lit space, as if he'd never been there at all.

Illyana's eyes widened and she grinned broader. "So, are you there? Or did you just disappear?"

He reappeared, but flipping some kind of dark knife in his hand that seemed to be made entirely from the shadow itself. "I can do a lot of things. Teleport through shadows, travel along them, see in the dark - and make parts of them tangible." He held up the knife as he moved closer, letting her see.

"I like it." Illyana grinned and reached out to touch the knife, pausing before she did and raising her eyebrows to ask permission.

Vax passed it to her - all wisping smoke and darkness with a wicked blade. "Now, demon sorceress?" he asked.

Illyana turned it over in her hand and smiled, with just a glint of mischief in her eyes. "We'd have to go on a field trip for me to demonstrate. And He Who Is Seriously Pissed At Me insists I'm not allowed to do that without asking the person's permission first."

The dagger suddenly rippled away in her fingers, shadows flying to all parts of the hall. Vax tilted his head, his eyes glinting with mischief. "I like field trips."

"I'm taking that as permission." Illyana grinned, made a gesture with her arm (unnecessary, but hey, it looked dramatic) and summoned a stepping disk.

"Welcome to Limbo, home of demons and one seriously pissed off sorcerer who isn't real happy with me these days, so we can't stay long," she offered. Especially since, by total fluke (or maybe her subconscious at work, it was hard to say which) they'd ended up right in the throne room.

"Holy shit," Vax breathed, grinning and looking around him in wonder. "No fucking way. Are we on another plane?"

Illyana blinked and stared at him, surprised. "Different dimension, yeah. You know about those?"

He shook his head, walking around, keeping his eyes out on pretty much everything. "Only from stories. All the mythologies have them. It's where the beings of power - gods and shit - lock themselves away."

"Well, that's one way to look at it," Illyana reflected. Belasco was definitely a being of power, and he was locked away here. "Anyway, it's the stopover point for my teleports."

Vax hummed in agreement. "Like I have to be in shadow for mine. But why demonic?" he asked, looking back at her.

"Because there are demons?" Illyana admitted. She glanced around apprehensively. "And worse - this was really a bad place to 'port into. Do you mind if we go back?"

He glanced back at her, surprised to see a bit of a furtive look on her face. "I would protect you," he promised, but stepped back to her side anyway.

The look he earned was both sad and grateful, but Illyana shook her head. "That's what I'm afraid of." She called up a stepping disk and Limbo's throne room disappeared, to be replaced a moment later by the fortunately empty kitchen.

Vax glanced around, raising an eyebrow at her. "Trusting that this is not an odd, but different plane of existence?"

"This is the normal one," Illyana assured him. She forced a grin. "Welcome to the kitchen. We just kinda bypassed the space in between, but I'll show you how to actually get here on the way out. Did you want something to eat, or did you just want to know where it was?"

"Where," Vax told her, but quirked a little smile. "Except I don't actually know how to cook."

Illyana grinned sheepishly. "Me either. Or not really, anyway - I'll show you were the cafeteria is next. But..." She walked over to the fridge and opened it. "I grab sodas with the best of them. Want anything?"

When was the last time he'd had a fizzy drink? A few months back, Vax thought. He thought he remembered nicking some for Pike and Keyleth. "I won't say no," he agreed, trying not to look as lost as he felt. So much had changed in just a few months. It was all different.

Illyana grabbed a pair of Cokes and brought them over. "You okay?" she asked, noting he looked a little...off, maybe. "Limbo's kinda bizarre, I know."

Vax blinked and looked up at her. "Limbo? The other plane? No, that actually felt fairly homey to me, if you can believe it. It's all of this that's new and strange."

"Mmm, I get that." Illyana gestured towards the table, eyebrows raising in inquiry. "Want to sit down? We can put the tour on hold." She made a face. "Trust me, I've got alllll day."

"Yeah? Why's that?" he asked, swinging a chair around to straddle it backwards.

"Grounded." Illyana shrugged. She offered a crooked grin and came over to plop down in a chair of her own. "No big deal, and hey, I get to play tour guide. Could be worse."

"Could be someone more boring than me," Vax pointed out, taking a slow, careful sip of the drink.

"Exactly." Illyana grinned and held up her soda in salute before taking a drink. She set it back down on the table and met his eyes. "So, if Limbo felt homey, I'm guessing this place feels pretty bizarre?" Or not guessing, all things considered. Some days it still felt bizarre to her, too.

"Pretty bizarre," he agreed. "But my life has been that way the last couple of months. I was living on the streets of London back then, figuring out how my power worked. Now I'm here, separated from Vex for the first time in ever."

"That's gotta suck." Not that she had any real basis for comparison, but it sounded as if it would. "She's not a mutant, I'm guessing? I half expected you to say she was a speedster."

"I think she would say she's pretty bummed she's not," Vax agreed. "But no. No powers, at least not yet. As for the sucking? Yeah. Yeah, it does."

"I'm sorry." Because honestly, what else was there to say? "Was she living on the streets of London with you? Or was it a solo powers-related thing?"

"No, she was with me. A few other kids too," Vax told her, taking another sip. "We didn't think we had anyone, until I got nicked by the cops and our absent dad showed up."

Illyana wrinkled her nose. "Awesome timing. Did he bail you out, at least?"

"Oh fuck yeah. Turns out they couldn't arrest me anyway," Vax sighed, then smirked. "The asshole's a foreign diplomat. My sister's now living in a residence at Kensington Palace Gardens."

"No fucking way." Illyana stared, her soda raised halfway to her mouth. "And you didn't know this?"

Vax shrugged. "He hadn't seen us since we were babes. We didn't even know who he was."

"See, now that's bizarre." Illyana grinned. "Also kinda cool. Except now I want to go visit Vex and see a real palace."

He started to say something, then grinned back at her. "You can teleport. I mean, really teleport. Not just my little jumps..."

"I'd have to scry for it," Illyana warned him. "I've never seen Kensington Palace. Though if it's in London, I've been there," she mused. "How far can you go? And can you take passengers?"

"I've never tried. And it's easier to move continuously through shadow, rather than to jump puddles," Vax told her.

Illyana grinned. "Well, if you want to try it, I'm game. But I'm thinking - if it works? I could get us to London easy enough, and you could take it from there?"

"Rain check? I'm still fucking tapped from the flight over," Vax admitted.

"Hey, I didn't mean right now," she assured him. "We've got soda to drink, a cafeteria to find, and a tour to finish." She shrugged. "The offer stands, though. I wouldn't mind a closer look at London anyway, and it'd be cool to see a palace that didn't get decorating ideas from horror movies."

"It's more like a fucking monstrous mansion than something in a fairy tale, but sure. The French ambassador place is a fancy building on the property that rivals the school, all art and old furniture. There's a whole street of posh mansions let out to foreign embassies," Vax told her.

"And you were...not okay with this, for some reason?" Illyana's expression was more curious than surprised - after all, there had to be a reason. "Was your dad that big an asshole?"

"Trust me - he really is," Vax told her, still hearing 'half-breed' echo in his ears. "And he also blackmailed me to come."

"Uggh. Okay, that's definitely an asshole, yeah." Illyana made a face, and wished the whole hugging thing Kitty and Billy managed came easier to her. She wasn't quite sure how you'd initiate that with a table in the way.

Vax shrugged, but he was still hung up on the idea of a transocean road trip. "You know, I'd love to hitch a ride with you sometime - surprise Vex with a visit."

"Anytime." She grinned, just a little evilly. "And y'know, if you want your dad to disappear, we could always send him to Limbo. Free one way vacation?"

He smirked. Fuck, he wished he could. He'd do it too, if Velora weren't in the picture. "Unfortunately, he has another kid has to support, and she doesn't deserve to go the way Vex and I did."

"Mmm, yeah, that complicates things, huh?" Illyana smiled sympathetically and got to her feet. "Maybe I can think of something. In the meantime, did you want to get something to eat from the cafeteria?"

Vax gave a nod, a small smile on his lips. "I'm fucking starved. Let's ditch the tour, yeah?"

"Ditching, thank you." Illyana held out her hand to tug him up. "Just tell the Prof you were too jet-lagged if you see him, okay?" She grinned. "But you're welcome to reschedule."

"You took me to Limbo," Vax grinned, tugging her gently close to his side. "It was an awesome tour."

"You have a very interesting definition of awesome." Illyana did nothing to resist his tug, and settled in against his side to peer up at him and grin. "I think I like it."
