Bucky and Illyana meet up at Kitty's party. They still neglect to exchange names.

Bucky didn't expect to enjoy himself at this party, but since this wasn't a status event Stark required less babysitting. Also, he knew people here, so it was difficult to escape being social. Dancing happened, because TJ knew he could dance and there was no way getting out of it. But honestly? Bucky wasn't opposed.

Just as long as no one tried to make him sing karaoke, all was fine. He was avoiding such a fate when he bumped into Illyana. "Hey there. Long time no see."

Illyana'd left Vex talking with someone with the excuse of going to find Billy, and had been scanning the crowd distractedly, looking for him, when she felt someone bump into her. "Oh, hey," she replied with a smile when she turned to see the guy she'd met outside the Institute when she'd slept over at Vex's treehouse. The one Vex had insisted was named Bucky, but honestly, she still wasn't entirely sure her friend wasn't messing with her on that one. It sounded more like the name of some team mascot than it did that of a person. Her smile turned a bit mischievous as she gestured towards his chest. "Left the guinea pig home?"

Because okay, it was a dog. Technically. But she still had a hard time believing dogs came that small.

His lips quirked. “Didn’t think this was the greatest place for her. Shoes, today?”

"Shoes," Illyana assured him, lifting her foot to show off her sandal. "Or, y'know, footwear, at least." She grinned impishly. "Just so you wouldn't have to worry about me getting frostbite."

"They make the outfit," he said with amusement.

"You think?" Slowly, Illyana did a full turn to show off the whole thing, then raised her eyebrows as she turned back to look at him. "Better than pajamas?"

He grinned. “Yeah. You look good.”

Grin softening to a smile, Illyana smiled. "Thanks. You don't look so bad yourself, without the parka."

Bucky was in his usual all black, but he’d switched to a button down for the occaision. His sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, not bothering to hide the metal arm while they were inside. “But with the parka it was questionable, huh? Good to know.”

"Well, you just said I didn't look good in my PJs, so I think it's only fair," she pointed out. Her eyes drifted to his arm and widened, her breath catching, but she clamped down on her reaction and looked back to his face. Prosthetic arms weren't a big deal, right? He didn't look a thing like Belasco, who'd never bothered with any kind of prosthetic anyway, and it wasn't even the same arm, and...yeah. She forced a grin that was only slightly shaky. "Besides, it's hard to tell what someone looks like in a parka in the middle of the night."

He didn’t miss the way her eyes caught on his arm. “That’s what you get for lurking on the woods at night.”

"I wasn't lurking," she objected. "I was walking. With a definite goal in mind. If anyone was lurking, it was you."

“Yeah, pretty much,” he agreed.

Illyana laughed. "Well, at least you admit it. What were you doing wandering around in the snow in the dark? I'm pretty sure it only counts as taking your dog for a walk when the dog's actually walking."

“That’s how it started,” he said with a shrug. “Getting to know the school.”

From the outside, in the dark. To her, that sounded less like getting to know the school than trying to get away from it. On the other hand, she'd spent a decent amount of time in the two cold for comfort lake right after she'd arrived, so she couldn't exactly talk. "Fair. Did you decide if you like it or not yet?"

Bucky’s lips quirked. “It’s fine. Little weird, but good people. I take it you’re friends with the birthday girl?”

"My old roommate." Illyana smiled. "Still my best friend. Now that she's talking to me again, anyway."

“Well, that’s good,” he commented.

"Yeah," she agreed. "How 'bout you? Do you know Kitty, or are you just here for the party?"

“Don’t really know her, but ended up coming out with Stark.” Bucky nodded his head toward Natasha. “Figured since it was mostly kids from school it wouldn’t hurt to get out.”

"Would it hurt if it wasn't?" Illyana asked, cocking her head as she looked up at him curiously. She wasn't sure who Stark was, other than apparently a friend of his, but that part really didn't matter anyway.

He raised the hand she’d stared at earlier. “If it wasn’t, I’d need to cover this up.”

"How come?" Illyana frowned, then shook her head. "Okay, sorry, that's probably a really rude question. But fake arms aren't that weird, are they?"

“I don’t need the attention,” Bucky answered.

"Is someone looking for you?" Illyana asked. It wasn't unheard of - she was pretty sure Vance's tendency to keep a low profile had something to do with just that, and while the Right was allegedly gone, she figured someone would step up to take their place sooner or later.

He smiled wryly. "Is that the case with half the kids here?"

"I don't know," Illyana admitted. "I don't know more than half the kids here. I'd guess some of them, though. And some of the others wish someone was, but they're not."

“We’ll save our bundle of tragic backstories until after the birthday,” Bucky suggested. “But yeah, I’ve been laying low.”

"Been there, done that," Illyana acknowledged, nodding her agreement to skip over any tragic backstories until later, though the fact he apparently had one intrigued her. "Though y'know," she mused, "I could probably get a glamour to cover your arm for a few hours, at least. If you ever wanted to lay low in public."

That sparked a warmer smile. “You want to spend time with me in public, huh? Or is that just a charitable offer?”

"Ummm..." Illyana felt her face warm. She hadn't meant anything except exactly what she'd said, and while she didn't have any objection to spending time with him in public, she wasn't sure how he meant spending time. Especially with him smiling at her like that. "Sure? I mean, we could. But I'm not sure I'm a great person to lay low with." She also wasn't sure how Pyro'd feel about her hanging out with yet another guy from the school. Especially a really cute one.

It was pretty amazing how easily flirting came back, when plenty of Bucky’s other reflexes were geared toward fight or flight responses. But Illyana was a beautiful girl, and it was easy to jest. He didn’t want to come across as sleaze though, because he did remember the mention of a boyfriend. Bucky shrugged, trying to ease off. “Thank you for the offer. I guess there’s also the image inducers. I got really used to gloves in winter and keep forgetting you all have these magical and technical solutions now.”

"Which are probably more reliable than anything magical or technical anyway," Illyana pointed out, forcing herself to relax. Obviously, he hadn't meant it the way it had sounded. "Still, you'd look kinda weird wearing a glove in the middle of summer. I'd be willing to give it a shot."

“You come up with something that sticks and doesn’t fry in water, we’ll start up a beach day field trip,” Bucky suggested. Because there was someplace he couldn’t hide the whole damn arm and enjoy.

Illyana grinned. "Challenge accepted. I'm a huge fan of the beach."

Bucky smiled. “Well, now I’m hopeful.”

"For the spell? Or the trip to the beach?" Illyana teased. Now that she was pretty sure he wasn't actually serious, she could hold her own. Being Pietro's newbie had inured her to being teased.

“Can’t it be both?” Bucky asked.

"Maybe. Is it both?" she countered.

Bucky considered and then smiled softly. “Shit. You really do have me thinking about the beach. It’s been forever.”

Illyana's eyebrows rose and a slow, mischievous grin spread. "Y'know...we could go find one. And be back with tans before anyone noticed we were gone."

“Is that an offer to kidnap right now? How accurate is your time jumping?” Bucky asked, both curious and a bit worried for her power.

"Kitty only has one sweet sixteen birthday party. I shouldn't have any trouble finding it," she assured him. "Worst case scenario, we miss half an hour or so." Or maybe an hour. In any case, they'd be back way before it ended.

No way was Bucky stepping through a portal and disappearing solo. Illyana probably wasn’t a Hydra assassin, but any idea that started with ‘before anyone knows we’re gone’ was a recipe for not coming back. Even with good intentions, he couldn’t take that risk.

Bucky played it off with a smile. “Let’s save it. One special occasion at a time. But summer’s coming, so let’s plan.” He nodded toward the friend she came in with. “Gather the crew and make our own beach party.”

"That does sound fun," Illyana conceded. Also way more practical, considering that she didn't even have a swimsuit at the school, though she could've taken care of that easily enough in Limbo. Still, she felt a need to sigh dramatically. And pout. "So much for spontaneity, though."

Bucky laughed. “Coming out tonight burned my spontaneity. I gotta recharge before I plunge into another new scene.”

"So is all spontaneity out? Or just spontaneity that involves leaving the party?" she teased.

He made a show if considering that. “Nothing that involves leaving or singing seems like a safe line.”

Illyana laughed. "What about dancing? Or does the singing line actually involve all things music related?"

“Dancing I can do.”

"Would you want to?"

Bucky offered her his hand. “Try me.”

Illyana felt her face warm as she took his hand and headed for area Kitty'd cleared out for dancing. Why, she wasn't entirely sure - it wasn't as if she hadn't already danced with several other people without facewarming-ness. It couldn't be the flirting; he'd made it pretty clear, she thought, that he was just goofing around with that, kind of like when Pietro called her Gorgeous. It didn't mean anything.

Her face warmed, anyway. "I'm not all that good at this," she admitted with a crooked grin as they reached the improvised dance floor. "I pretty much just copy what the person I'm with is doing."

Bucky wasn’t familiar with half the music they played, but the tempo was upbeat and rhythm easy to feel.

“There’s no right way, no wrong way,” he said. He gave Illyana a small tug and spun her easily, certain she was underselling herself. Bucky grinned. “Well just sway and bob up and down like everyone else.” He nodded toward Ororo and T’Challa. “And no taking lessons from those two unless you want your boyfriend going for my kneecaps.”

Laughing with surprise, Illyana spun - like Pietro, this guy knew how to dance - and glanced over at the pair he indicated. She felt a pang of unease as she always did at the sight of the girl who looked so much like Ashake, but covered it and looked up at her partner instead, forcing a grin. "Honestly? He'd probably just be relieved he didn't have to dance with me. He's really not a fan."

“Well, guess that’s what friends are for then.” Bucky smiled. “Some people are way too self conscious.”

"I'm not sure self conscious is exactly the words I'd use to describe Pyro." She pretended to give it serious consideration, then shrugged and grinned. "But otherwise? Yeah, definitely."

Bucky flipped that name over in his head. Pyro. Seriously, what kind of name was that? "Want in on a poorly kept secret?"

"Definitely. I love secrets. Even poorly kept ones," she assured him.

"Dance is probably my favorite class at Xavier's. It's the most random thing, but it's the highlight of the week."

Illyana laughed. "I'm not about to argue that," she assured him. "It was my favorite, too. I don't think I even ever skipped it." She paused to consider that. "Well, okay, once or twice. But never intentionally."

Bucky grinned. "You don't seem too pro classroom."

"Oh, definitely not," Illyana admitted, grinning back. "Though it's weird, I actually kinda miss it sometimes. Even if most of it didn't make any sense."

"It's a good ritual," Bucky commented. "Socializing, learning something pretty harmless, just some normal day to day activity. What do you all get up to every day over at Brotherhood headquarters?"

"Nothing all that exciting. Illyana wrinkled her nose and shrugged. "Everyone shares the cleaning and cooking - well, mostly everyone, Wanda's not allowed to use the kitchen and if we let Freddy cook the food, it'd be gone before anyone else got any, but they do other stuff. Powers training. TV watching." She grinned. "The new season of Game of Thrones is starting, so we had to do a marathon of the previous seasons. That didn't suck."

“I haven’t caught any episodes yet, but it seems really popular,” Bucky commented. “If you had one show to recommend for sleepless nights, what would it be?”

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer," she answered without hesitation. "Seven seasons and a spin-off series. It's on Hulu."

He grinned. “That sounds like a solid endorsement. I’ll have to scope it out.”

Illyana grinned back. "It's pretty awesome. Nico and I marathon it sometimes. How about you, though? Got a favorite?"

“No favorites, really,” he answered. “Didn’t have television growing up, and I am catching up on too many things to pick one thing.”

Cocking her head, Illyana looked up at him with interest. "No TV, and you were home schooled. And not by religious nuts, because you didn't freak over the demon sorceress thing. You've definitely got me interested in the whole story." She grinned. "Which I'm guessing is what you're going for?"

Bucky arched a brow and gave Illyana another spin. When he tugged her in he pulled her back against him. “Nah. I’m not much of a storyteller. Suffice to say, I’m a guy with a metal arm that’s seen some shit. And now I get to make up for lost time.”

"By dancing, going to the beach, and watching Buffy on late night TV?" she teased as she pressed back against him, moving with the music. Actually, those didn't sound like bad places to start, and this was nice - dancing with someone who enjoyed it and was good at it (and who wasn't Pietro) seemed like an entirely different thing from dancing with someone who didn't and wasn't. "I'd throw in working your way through Ben and Jerry's flavors too. If you like ice cream." She grinned and she tilted her head to peer up at him. "Maybe a few other things, too."

He smiled over her shoulder. “Multiple flavors of ice cream? That sounds like a great idea.”

Illyana laughed and wrinkled her nose at him. "Yep. That's exactly what I meant. Mix them together, add hot fudge and sprinkles, and see what you get."

"This is an experiment that I can get behind." He rocked her to the music.
