Ororo & Vex (Halloween Shindig)

Vex and Ororo at the Halloween party.

Ororo watched fondly as Jean drew Scott on the dance floor for a slow dance, then turned away to go and get herself something to drink. Her outfit certainly didn't keep her warm, between the tank top and the short shorts (and even if it had, her mutation was great to solve those kinds of issues), but she had danced to a few songs, and she was thirsty.

She pondered her options when she reached the drinks table, ignoring the faint itch of the elaborate make-up on her face. With the top hat perched on her head, and the black and white striped choker, belt and arm warmers she had on, she looked like the love child of Baron Samedi and Harley Quinn, and she was digging the result. After a few seconds, she reached for some fruit juice, idly wishing she had something to spike her drink with. She didn't drink much alcohol, but she would welcome a small buzz right now. It was a good party, and she felt relaxed and happy.

She turned around from pouring her drink to see Vex approaching, and she broke into a smile. "Hello, witch."

Vex felt like she was walking around half numb, and half her effort tonight was spent trying to keep a somber expression off her face. She wasn’t spreading word about the incident with Saundor the weekend prior. Vox Machina knew, and maybe she’d talk about it more over time, but for now she intended to pretend everything was normal. The pretense was an effort, at least until she caught sight of Ororo. She did a genuine double-take and then fought to keep her gaze above the waist.

“Damn,” Vex said. “Wow. Um. You look great.”

Ororo looked amused; it wasn't every day she managed to make Vex sound less than eloquent. "Thank you." Her smile went up a notch, all friendly teasing. "I like your hat."

“It’s a very ostentatious hat.” Vex’s whole effort was very minimal effort tonight. “I had some other ideas, but when it came down to it I didn’t feel like slipping into a dress tonight. Sometimes you want to feel like a cake, sometimes you’d rather mobility.”

Ororo chuckled at the cake comment. "I think I'll always favor mobility."

“If you favor this form of mobility more often I’m afraid I might be very distracted.” Vex smiled softly. “Did you want to grab a drink?”

Ororo raised her drink to show that she was all set, but they were only a step away from the drinks table. "And don't worry. The - laces?" She wasn't sure what to call the straps that crossed her legs. "Aren't that practical."

Vex's lips curved further. "I'm not sure how to take that. I'm going to behave and not comment." She reached into the bag at her hip, pulling out a flask.

"And I'll forever wonder what you could have said," Ororo remarked.

"It was wildly inappropriate, I promise." Vex toasted her with the flask before taking a sip. "Would you like some? Not sure what they've done to the drinks on offer already."

"What is it?" Ororo asked, even as she held out her cup for a drop. She couldn't think of much that wouldn't go well with fruit juice.

"Rum." Vex tipped some into her cup. "There's always a birthday happening around here. If a bottle doesn't get finished it finds its way into my closet."

"Thank you. Alcohol hoarder," Ororo commented, amused. "Where do you find space for your clothes?" She lifted a finger of the hand holding her cup. "No, I know. Your closet is like your bag."

“There’s really not that much in the closet.” Vex considered. “Although now that you mention it I’m pretty sure most of it is in my bag. I know I’ve tucked it away when cleaning up, but I’m not sure I can remember how much has ended up in here... I may need to inventory at some point.”

"We really do live in wonderful times," Ororo remarked with a smile. "How do you even find anything in there?"

“You have to know what you’re reaching for,” Vex said. “I could dump the whole thing out... might take a while, but generally I have to know what I want and I can grab it immediately. I really need to make a bigger bag one of these days for getting things into it.”

Vex's mutation truly was amazing, and Ororo's eyes shone with it. "How tiring is it? Enchanting things?"

"I guess it depends on how much I'm doing. Decorating the entire gym wiped me out, but general enchanting isn't really an exhaustion thing." She smiled. "I run the risk of making something unexpected if I don't concentrate, which you've seen. So it's not a good multitasking power."

"It had to have one drawback, I guess," Ororo offered.

"I can't claim to be perfect." Vex took another sip from the flask and then tucked it back into the bag.

"No, that would be too boring," Ororo agreed, and took a sip from her doctored drink. She liked rum; it added that wonderful extra flavor to the juice. "Are you having a good evening?"

Vex shrugged. “I’m a bit run down tonight,” she admitted. “It’s a good party, but I may crash early. How about you?”

"I have more dancing in me yet," Ororo replied with a smile, which faded into a sympathetic impression. "Did you catch something?" Which, come to think of it, would make Ororo rethink accepting that alcohol from the flask Vex drank from.

“Nothing like that,” Vex reassured. They’d managed not to run into anyone when they got home previous weekend, and Vex wasn’t advertising the incident with Saundor. Pike healed all of the cuts and bruises. Looking at her, there was no way to tell she’d fought off a deadly tree. “Just girl stuff.”

Sort of. It wasn’t the worst lie she’d ever told.

Ororo made a sympathetic grimace. Whether Vex meant 'romantic stuff' or 'hellish cramps', it sucked. "Sorry about that," she said, and took another drink. "No tempting you onto the dancefloor tonight, then?"

Vex’s gaze flickered to Ororo’s outfit again and she smiled. “I think I can manage one dance.”

Ororo grinned, and held a hand out to Vex. "Come on, then."

Vex slipped her hand into Ororo’s. It was good to know that no matter how she closed her heart, her pulse still jumped for a beautiful girl. She wasn’t broken. She was playing it safe until she could think ahead.

Vex tugged Ororo toward the dance area. “I’ll blame you for wearing me out later.”

"I can live with that," Ororo assured Vex, and started dancing, careful not to spill her drink.
