Inu-Yasha and Shen - End of year party

Inu-yasha had wandered into the party just long enough to stuff his pockets with some snacks, and was headed back to the edge of things before anyone tried to talk to him or something. The loud music and all the people were messing with his senses, but from the edges he could keep an eye on things without getting too overwhelmed.
And yet he still managed to nearly run into Shen, and he blinked at her in surprise, like she'd just appeared out of thin air.
"Oh, hey!" Shen let out, clearly just as surprised. Inu-Yasha was... in the middle of the party. Not hanging out on the edges, judging people left and right. That was... new. "How are you doing?"
Blinking like he didn't understand the question, he replied, "Huh?" Then, flushing faintly, "M'fine."
Shen didn't let his manner deter her. It was just the way he was. "Having a good time?"
"Course not," Inu-yasha snorted. "How can anyone actually like all this noise and crap?"
Ah. Shen's lips set into a skeptical line. "What are you doing here, then?"
Inu-yasha flinched, almost imperceptibly, as she called him out. Admitting he'd come in just for the free food would just make him look pathetic, like the loser street kid he was, so no way he was doing that. "Nothin' better to do," he said instead.
Right. Same old same old. "Try not to accidentally enjoy yourself, then," Shen told him.
"Keh, enjoy what?" he replied, glancing around again. People laughing too loud, thumping music, weird light... He really didn't understand how anyone could want this.
"Yeah," Shen confirmed, more to herself than to him, before turning to go. "Well, I'll get back to it."
Inu-yasha couldn't help frowning. "What's wrong with you?"
Shen side-eyed him. "Because I'm enjoying myself?"
"Not gonna yell at me or try'n change my mind?" he asked, genuinely confused.
"I'm trying to learn to choose my battles," Shen replied. "You keep on doing you. I'll be having fun." And she turned to go again.
Inu-yasha's head tipped to one side, confused. This was totally different than when they used to talk. Not that he cared or anything. "Whatever."
