Gar spots a kitten on campus, and is even willing to put up with one of her cranky caretakers for some playtime.

Soaring over the school grounds, Gar was enjoying the first hints of spring air as a red-tail hawk (and yeah, okay, he liked to joke and call it a 'green-tail' when he was one). He settled down in one of the trees outside the boys' dorms, wondering if it was still too chilly to open the windows. At least it was sunny out.

His hawk's gaze swept over the windows, wondering if Remy was in for him to ask. Except... which window was his again? He didn't want to be a snoop, but in a tree like this, it wasn't like he could see much. He'd probably be able to tell if one of these rooms was his. How had he not memorized this before? He didn't recognize any of the clothes on that floor, and that room had a kitten sunbathing on the floor, so that wasn't his--hold up, kitten?

Kitten?

Either there was another animal shapeshifter, or someone had a kitten on campus. And if someone did, Gar was determined to do something about it. Namely, play with the kitten, because kitten. He swooped from his perch and his form melted as he got close to the ground, transforming into a friendly-looking green tabby, hopping up onto the windowsill, green eyes peering through curiously at the kitten. He wasn't going to try to open the window from outside, yet. He wanted to see if anyone was in, first of all.

Inu-yasha was reading. Sort of. Sitting on his bed with his back to the wall and a large book in his lap, he was flipping through and mostly looking at the pictures, reading the little bits of information that appeared next to them or beside them. It definitely wasn’t studying, just passing the time.

He looked up when the little cat stirred from where she’d been sound asleep in a sunbeam, then they both peered at the window and the strange cat there.

Inu-yasha frowned. “The hell?”

The kitten, for her part, took immediate interest, springing up onto Tommy’s desk to get a better view of the green cat.

Gar was far more interested in the kitten than Inu-yasha, who he vaguely remembered as being kind of rude before. He heard him swear, which was just, well, crass around such young ears (except those young ears were kitten ears, and couldn't understand English probably, so... he needed to stop thinking of animals as people as he often did). Whatever. He had a kitten, and part of him was hoping the little thing was helping him become less of a grump.

He pawed the window, as if asking for entry to the room, and let out a trilling little inquisitive meow.

Inu-yasha frowned for a moment, but the kitten was pawing at the window, too dumb to understand glass. Fine. Tossing the book aside, he stood and pulled the window open enough for the green ‘cat’ to come in - and catching the little gray tabby under her belly and airlifting her to his side, holding on to the squirming thing until the window was closed again and she wasn't gonna fall out the window.

He scowled at the green cat. “What?”

The green tabby didn't waste any time getting in, melting into Gar's form sitting on the floor, looking up at Inu-yasha and the kitten. "You have a kitten!" he said, excitedly, though he was keeping his voice down. It was obviously supposed to be a secret, otherwise he'd heard about it.

The kitten abruptly stopped squirming as the other ‘cat’ became human, her eyes wide and focused on him, one paw still shoved into Inu-yasha’s side from her previous escape attempt.

Inu-yasha seemed to have forgotten about her for the moment. “Yeah. So?”

"Well, cats... they're cute. And they need playmates. And I just so happen to be the best animal playmate," Gar said. "And I know animals. Really really well. Like, when I'm a cat, I get cats. So I can tell if the kitten's hungry, or sad, or lonely, or bored, or whatever." Okay, he was exaggerating a bit, but still. Inu-yasha didn't need to know.

Giving the green kid a suspicious look, Inu-yasha plopped the kitten back on his desk. She seemed used to this and entirely unphased, just moved to the edge of the desk, looked a little daunted by the drop but crouched and wiggled her butt for a second before leaping to the ground. Upon finding herself there, she moved toward the new human, sniffing curiously.

“She’s fine,” Inu-yasha replied, not sure what Gar was getting at.

"Well yeah," Gar said, looking away from the kitten and offering his hand nonchalantly for the kitten to sniff. "But she could be great," Gar said. "Does she have a name?" he asked, curiously.

“No,” Inu-yasha replied before really thinking about it. Wait, wasn’t there something Tommy called her sometimes? “Dunno. She’s Tommy’s cat.” He frowned, watching the kitten sniff intently at Gar’s hand. “Pita?”

"Like the bread?" Gar asked, tilting his head a little, curiously.

Inu-yasha’s brow furrowed in confusion, watching as the kitten batted experimentally at Gar’s hand. Figured. She thought everything was a toy lately. (Including his ears, but he was never going to tell anyone that, ever.) “What bread?”

Gar waggled his fingers at the kitten, trying to provoke it to play more. He grinned briefly at the small fuzzy creature, and then turned his attention back to Inu-yasha. "It's like, a... it's a kind of bread," Gar said, not knowing how to better describe it.

Inu-yasha just stared at him like he might be stupid.

"It's... it's like a flat bread, I think," Gar said, still wiggling his fingers at the kitten. "Look it up. You have a cell phone, right? Pita bread," he said. He didn't carry his around, even though he probably could but he didn't know how electronics might react to his shapeshifting. His keys were always fine, but they were pretty simple. He wasn't sure how a cell phone might hold up to being shunted to, well, wherever he shunted mass when he changed. "It's totally a thing. I'm not joking."

“Why would Speedy name her after a flat bread?” Inu-yasha asked quizzically, making no move to pull out his phone.

For her part, the kitten pounced on Gar’s hand, sinking sharp little teeth into one finger and using her paws to wrestle down the others.

He was about to answer when the kitten bit him. "Ow, ow," Gar exclaimed, trying to keep calm as he shook the kitten off, gently. "No biting. Not when my skin's this flimsy, at least." When he was a cat, it'd be easier for her to be rough with him and get away with it.

"And I dunno. Maybe she looks like pita bread to him," Gar said, looking at the kitten. Though... that seemed quite unlikely. "Or ... maybe it means something in another language?"

A smirk flickered across Inu-yasha’s face when the kitten bit him. She rolled onto her side, waiting for Gar to play with her again. Inu-yasha would play with her like that sometimes, but he wasn’t so fragile. “Beats me,” he said with a shrug.

"Well, whatever, Pita's a cute name. Anyway, playtime?" he asked, asking Inu-yasha as much as the kitten, wiggling his hand at her again, though this time being careful to watch for teeth.

“...what?” If Inu-yasha looked confused, he was. The kitten pounced on Gar’s hand again, wrestling it and trying to get her teeth into him again.

Whatever, it wasn't like changing shapes took much effort. He jerked his hand back away from the kitten before she could bite it, and then his form melted into that of the green tabby once more; Gar made sure his posture wasn't threatening, with his tail up and his stance relaxed, so that the kitten would be alarmed as little as possible.

The kitten popped up and then fell backwards in an awkward tangle of limbs, eyes wide, tiny mind completely blown by the transformation she’d just witnessed.

“Oy, what the hell?” Inu-yasha griped at the green cat. What, he was just planning to roll around on the floor? Who’d invited him?! His frown only deepened as the kitten scampered around his legs, leaning her body against his ankle as she peered at the tabby, clearly trying to balance caution and curiosity.

Cat-Gar tilted his head, looking up at Inu-yasha with what appeared to be a slightly amused expression. He meowed, inquisitively, trilling slightly, at the kitten, trying to invite her over to play. Man, this room... smelled strongly of Inu-yasha and Tommy. Sensitive noses were hard to get used to sometimes. Still, it seemed like Pita had a litterbox, from what he could smell, or rather, by what he couldn't so much smell. Which was good.

Seeming to find her courage, Pita lunged forward in a play-tackle that came up a little short, waiting to see how the other cat responded.

Inu-yasha snorted. Couldn’t she tell a fake cat from a real one? “Who said you could stay?” he demanded irritably.

Whatever, if Inu-yasha wanted to be a grump bucket and get offended that someone wanted to play with his pet, he'd be a grump bucket. Gar was more focused on the kitten. He was a bit surprised by the faltering play-tackle, and Cat-Gar reached out a paw to playfully swat at the kitten.

He was smelling something weird, again. Was it... dog? Whatever, maybe they'd had a puppy in here or something, too. If they did, he wanted to play with it. He'd ask later, maybe. More importantly, he wanted to play with the kitten. Maybe he'd turn into a ferret or something, and see how she reacted to something a bit closer to her size.

Seeming to decide that the green boy-cat was safe enough, Pita play-tackled him, standing on her hind legs to reach his ear and tug. Inu-yasha glared at the little traitor. "Keh, whatever," he growled, turning to hop onto his bed with a surprisingly graceful leap, crossing his legs and sitting back in his usual surly way. "But if you use the litterbox I'll kick your ass."

Whatever. Sure, he was an animal but he wasn't an animal. Gar flopped onto his side, glad his cat skin was a touch thicker than his own human skin, gently swiping at Pita and playfully trying to wrestle her off. Even like this, he was stronger than she was, but he didn't want to discourage play by shutting her down entirely. After all, this was a part of her learning how to, well, be a cat.

Inu-yasha glared at the green kid as he played with the kitten. Pita was more than capable of teaching him a lesson if she needed to - she knew how to use her teeth and claws - but she seemed happy to have a playmate her own size.

But if that changed, he'd toss the green kid out by the scruff of his neck, no matter what body he was in.

When Pita got tuckered out, which wasn't too terribly long, Gar sat cross-legged on the floor as a human again, grinning widely. "She's so fun," he said, affectionately. "She seems so happy, too. Which is great, that means you guys are doing a great job with her."

Inu-yasha snorted softly, not returning the green kid’s smile. “Course she’s happy - she’s warm and fed. And not in a dumpster.”

As if purposely aiming to undermine his tough guy approach, the kitten leapt onto his bed (struggling briefly when her sleepy jump came up a little short, but managing to scrabble up) and climbing directly into his lap, flopping over to lay mostly on one leg, head propped comfortably on his knee..

"Yeah, but see," Gar said, gesturing to the kitten in question. "She seeks you out. She feels safe with you, and that's super important. I can't really talk to her, not really, but I kinda understand cats better when I'm a cat," Gar explained. "She doesn't feel like she needs to watch her back all the time. It's kinda... cats are a bit weird. They're sort of a mix of solitary and social. She kinda... feels like you're family, I guess. And that's really important."

Inu-yasha looked down at the kitten, blinking in surprise.  Family? Then he scowled, first and her and then at the green kid. "Bullshit. I'm just warm."

"There's plenty of warm spots around," Gar said, gesturing around. "Napping in the sun is one thing, but settling down for a good post-play sleep? She chose you," Gar said. "She could've easily gone back into the sun spot and been just as warm, or warmer."

Scowling still, Inu-yasha considered. “So I put up with her. So what?”

"It isn't about you," Gar said. "It's about her. She likes you." Goodness knew why; he was such a grouch with him, every time, it seemed. "I'm just saying. That's... something you should be happy about, that she's gotten this attached to you."

Giving the green kid a glare, Inu-yasha just muttered, “Whatever.”

"Anyway," Gar said, ignoring Inu-yasha's grumpiness. "Secret's safe with me. As long as I get to come by and play sometimes," he said, grinning just a little. "I'm kidding. I won't drop in unannounced. She's just so much fun, and I'd hate for this to be the only time she and I got to play."

“...fine, I guess,” Inu-yasha agreed reluctantly.

"Great!" That was kind of like making friends with Inu-yasha. "I'm sure I'll see you around, then," he said, moving to the window he'd entered and opening it. "I'll see you around," he said, and without further ado, he lurched forward and his form melted into that of a lemur, and he climbed out the window, his little monkey hands just strong enough to mostly close the window behind him. He was at least trying to be polite.
Pita looked up curiously as the green animal-boy left, then settled happily against Inu-yasha’s leg, little claws flexing to start kneading into him. Inu-yasha frowned, then started scratching her head the way she liked, coaxing a happy purr from her. Family, the green kid said. How could a cat be family? Not like Inu-yasha was an expert on the subject, but that had to be BS.

Whatever. Looked like he was stuck here for a bit, since the little cat showed no signs of getting up. Closing his eyes, Inu-yasha settled in for a nap of his own.
