In which Pietro becomes an author, the Adventures of Vance Astro, Cosmic Ranger are plotted, and many key terms are defined.
"So, anyway," Vance said, after swallowing his peanut butter crackers. "I had lunch with one of the girls from Xavier's? And she seemed pretty chill. Plus she liked my name, which I don't think has ever happened before."
"Oh yeah? Which one was it?" Wanda leaned back in her chair, her feet up on the one next to her, and eyed him curiously. "And what'd she like about your name? Not that there's anything wrong with it," she added, because yeah. It was a name. Nothing exciting.
"Uh, Lil. Guess she's, like, invincible or something? Which is pretty cool. But yeah! She said that it sounded like an old sci-fi name, like a cosmic ranger." Vance said, grinning. He leaned back too, propping his feet up on the edge of the table. "I said Vance Astro might be better. Like some kind of comic book character, right?"
Wanda laughed. "Comic books or old pulp fiction, I agree. Fuck, we should do something with that. There are online sci fi magazines that pay for pulp fiction shit."
"Ooooh, pulp fiction? Like what kind of pulp fiction?" Vance asked.
"Like, old science fiction type stuff. Space explorers with ray guns and shit, I think." Wanda pulled out her phone and went to pull up a website. "We just need to come up with an awesome idea."
In a gust of what seemed like wind, Pietro suddenly appeared, one hip leaning against the back of his sister's chair, arms crossed over his chest, hair wild from running. "Did someone say ray guns?"
"Pulp fiction," Vance explained, grinning. "Some one said my name sounded like it was out of a book."
"Vance Astro, Cosmic Ranger," Wanda contributed. She grinned up at her brother. "I can picture it. All he needs is one of those old space suits with the fishbowl helmets and a ray gun. And, y'know, someone to write it."
"Whaaaaat! And a literary genius is right here in the room with you!" Pietro struck a Peter Pan pose. "I can totally do pulp. I've read so much pulp." So much everything, honestly, but still.
Vance's eyebrows shot up, "You wanna write Vance Astro, Cosmic Ranger?"
"Uh, yeah," Pietro said as if nothing could be more obvious. He looked to his sister, 'duh' expression in place.
Wanda let out a snort of laughter, rapped her arm around Pietro's legs, and leaned into him in lieu of a better hug. "So? Do it." She smirked. "Make it a serial; it'll give you something to do for half an hour a week."
"Wandaaaaa." Pietro sighed. "I'll have to interview the Cosmic Ranger to get material first. And you too, don't think you're off the hook. You're co-creators.
"Vance. A few questions. For one, what's the first adventure? Fighting a bad guy? Simple. Escaping some organization you've been ranging for for the last ten years and are just now realizing it's evil? Even better. What are we looking for?"
"Hmmmmm," Vance hummed, tapping his chin absently as he thought. "I dunno, I hadn't thought real seriously about it. But that escaping an evil organization thing sounds pretty cool..."
Wanda paused as what Vance had said sank in. "Y'know...we know all kinds of shit about evil organizations," she pointed out, looking up at Pietro. "What do they say about writing, start with stuff you know?"
Pietro made finger guns at his sister. Then at Vance. "Evil organization it is. And then we need a B plot. Preferably with a romantic angle. What are you into? Girls? Boys? Polyamorous and/or open relationships?"
Vance blinked. "Uh.....what?" What was polyamorous? He'd never even heard of that.
"Pietro..." Wanda said in warning, then sighed and turned to Vance. "Multiple people at the same time," she explained. "Like Alex, Tommy, and Fatale." After all, they'd kicked the kid out of his room and sent him to share with Eileen. They got to get used as an example, even if she wasn't altogether sure that was what they were up to. It was a pretty safe assumption.
Pietro didn't want to think about what those three got up to. At least he knew for sure now that Tommy wasn't 2.0 new and improved; Pietro was clearly smarter than him. Completely ignoring his warnings, "I'm just saying it'd be good to set up the romantic thread. Or aromantic. Maybe Vance Astro, Space Ranger, wants a queerplatonic life partner. I don't know, up to you, man!"
Those were a lot of words and, based on context, orientations that Vance didn't think he'd ever even heard of. "I don't know? I guess....I'm into girls?" He he guessed, he was into girls, but he was still trying to sort through everything Pietro had just said.
"Well, that makes it simple," Wanda jumped in, with a roll of her eyes for Pietro and a smirk as a thought occurred to her. "Maybe one who's on the other side? That always makes for a fun twist. Y'know, who he knows he shouldn't be attracted to, but he is anyway."
Pietro looked mildly disappointed at the answer--he'd been hoping for some kind of queer angle--but it was just a flash across his face. He perked up at Wanda's suggestion. "And the question is always whether he'll manage to bring her over to the side of the hero, or if he'll have to fight her in the end! That's good. Really good."
"If you guys say so. Can't exactly say I've read a lot," Vance admitted. Well, other than comic books, anyway.
"You really don't want to admit that to us," Wanda offered, giving the newbie a sympathetic look. "We'll start handing you shit to read, seeing as you're not taking classes."
"Who needs classes when you've got us. We know all the important stuff," Pietro said, 100% certain it was true. "Like important literature and what a queerplatonic lifepartner is."
"I guess," Vance said. He cocked his head curiously, and asked, "What is a queerplatonic life partner?"
Wanda facepalmed. "Go ahead," she told Pietro, knowing he'd be dying to. It wasn't as if they were going to get any further with this until it was all covered, now.
Pietro launched into a long-winded explanation immediately, occasionally speeding up too much to be understood until his sister elbowed him. But eventually he got to the point: a partnership that is committed and emotionally deep but not romantic. "So that's what I mean."
Vance blinked, looking a little like he'd just been caught in a tornado. Which, admittedly, he kind of had been. A Pietro-tornado. But at least what the other boy had said mostly made sense? They were just words, and concepts, Vance hadn't been all that familiar with. "Huh. Cool."
"Does that mean we're going with a queer platonic life partner instead?" Wanda asked, more than a little amused by the shell shocked expression on the newbie's face. "Because I liked the potential conflict."
Pietro shook his head. "No, no, we'll go with the first idea. I like the potential for UST in this plot. But if Vance is my source material I wanna get as much authenticity as I can. So, okay, what would attract you to someone who was on the other side?"
"So, anyway," Vance said, after swallowing his peanut butter crackers. "I had lunch with one of the girls from Xavier's? And she seemed pretty chill. Plus she liked my name, which I don't think has ever happened before."
