Lil and Shen - February 19

Lil brings Shen a gift, but after Lil's absence from the Q&A Shen's in no mood to accept it.

Lil had checked Shen's room, the gym, the library, and still hadn't managed to track her down. It wasn't absolutely essential that she found her right now, but Lil had just gotten back from Salem Center and was eager to pass along the thank you she'd picked up. Plus, there were ideas jumping around in her head, fueled by some of the books and sites the other girl had recommended that she had to share with someone. Even if Shen wasn't exactly a friend, hopefully she'd have the patience for a bit of excited chatter.

But maybe that wouldn't be happening today since Shen was off in some corner of the school Lil couldn't find. Ah well, she'd stick the gift in the fridge and track her down in a bit. No problem. Lil pushed open the door to the kitchen.

"Speak of the devil."There was Shen, grabbing a snack or quick meal at the counter. "I was looking for you all over!"

Shen's wings rustled at the initial phrase, and she looked over at her with a frown. "What's up?" she asked, as neutrally as she could manage.

Lil held up the bag she was carrying. "I got you something. I was in town today and picked up cupcakes which... I'm not sure if you like them, but I thought I'd bring 'em back anyway. Just a thank you for all the stuff you recommended."

"I'm vegan," Shen answered evenly. "So unless they are too - thanks for the thought. You didn't have to do that."

"Vegan Teddy said something about that but I couldn't remember." Lil took out three boxes and set them on the counter, then tapped the tops of them in turn. "Regular, gluten-free, and vegan. I bought all three so I'd be guaranteed to get the right one. And yeah, I did have to. I haven't stopped reading since we talked last."

Shen washed the apple she'd grabbed in the sink, then turned back to Lil, still frowning. "Great. Is that what you were doing instead of attending the Q&A? Reading?"

Oh. Of course this would be an issue with Shen, and she'd been an idiot not to see it, especially since she'd had Kurt at her door over the matter. All Lil had been thinking about today was cupcakes! and gushing about books and gratitude that Shen had opened a door for her. But she'd decided to skip the meeting and that was having all kinds of consequences.

"Yeah, I was."

"Awesome," Shen stated, although her tone didn't support the sentiment. "Thanks for the cupcakes." She bit into her apple instead, though.

Lil nodded and dropped her gaze to the counter. She wanted nothing more than to simply drop into the floor and disappear. "Look, I know this probably won't fly with you, but I thought I was doing the right thing. I messed up way back at the first forum thing, and I didn't want to do that again. I'm trying to get myself sorted out but with my temper... I don't know. Maybe I would have been okay or maybe I would have started a bunch of drama that got in the way of everything." God, this sucked. It felt sooo much better to just get angry at shit like this, except that if she did, she'd be right back into exactly what she'd been trying to avoid by not going to that stupid meeting. Better to try to swallow her pride now and not spend months paying for one dumb outburst. She picked up the other two boxes. "Anyhow, I heard you guys did a good job with the meeting, so I'll say thanks for that too and leave it there, eh?"

"That's not something for you to thank us for," Shen remarked, still distantly. They hadn't done it for her specifically - and they hadn't even done it for her as a random student of Xavier's either, since she hadn't shown up. But she wasn't picking a fight, and she'd be happy to leave it here.

"Yeah, it is. You guys did something to help the students, including friends of mine, so thank you." Okay, that had a bit of an edge on it that probably didn't exactly help the thank you, but Shen was pretty fucking intent on making this as humiliating as she could. A little edge could be expected.

"Well, I don't want your thanks," Shen replied with raised eyebrows, holding Lil's gaze for a beat, before she made to leave the kitchen.

Lil let her go. What was the point of saying anything else if Shen had decided she wasn't worth the effort of listening to? She glanced at the box of cupcakes Shen had left behind, then tossed the other two back down beside it. Someone else could have them. She just wanted to go back to her room, get into bed, and pull a blanket over her head to block out all the shit she'd managed to stir up just by doing nothing.
