Quatre finds a new kid napping on the couch and offers him use of his bed. Then remembers he has a roommate.
Quatre made his way down the hall, needing time away from their room when it seemed like Trowa was not going to be leaving anytime soon. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be around Trowa, quite the opposite, but learning that his inclinations toward his roommate were a little more than friendly worried Quatre. He made his escape to the rec room, where he figured he might find Jeanne-Marie or maybe another friend to hang out with, but what he found was a boy with a long dark braid asleep out on the couch. “Oh. That doesn't seem comfortable.”
They heard the words, but barely. There'd been other voices earlier that had threatened to pull him out of sleep, but Duo had stubbornly resisted. He hadn't had sleep in his own body for quite a while and there was no way anyone was going to give it up, not when he was finally here. Except this time, he felt that maybe it was time to wake up, see he cracked open one eye to take a look at who was talking. Another pretty blonde boy. This place seemed full of them.
"It is. Very."
Quatre jerked a little in surprise when it seemed the other was awake and gave the long-haired boy an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up. Why are you sleeping out here? There is so much noise, I would never be able to fall asleep.”
"Used to it," mumbled Duo, though before the big trek, it had been ages since he hadn't had a warm bed. He opened his other eye and slowly pushed himself up to sitting. "I got here, not too long ago. I think? I was tired" He looked around for a clock but didn't see one.
Quatre tilted his head at the way the other spoke, the soft accent making the boy’s words sounded very nice when he spoke. Quatre nodded and moved more towards the front of the couch, motioning to silently ask if he could sit. “Why not go to your room?”
Ah, something they hadn't seen to yet. "I would, if I had one. I only got here today and haven't talked to anyone but you, and another boy. Food and sleep first, evening else later."
“You don’t have one?” Quatre asked a little bit shocked, concern creeping easily into his tone and expression. “You can’t not have a room. You need somewhere to sleep and put your things.”
He purses his lips a little in thought. “You can put your things in my room, at least until everything gets settled, which I’m sure will be very soon.
Duo tilted his head and smiled. "That's very generous, and i think I'll take you up on that." He stuck his hand out. "My name is Duo."
Quatre smiled at the offer being accepted and reached his gloved hand out to shake Duo’s firmly. “Mine is Quatre. I like your hair by the way.”
"Thank you. It's been a long-term project." He grinned and stood, stretched arms up above him, then reached down for his bags. "We might as well move things now before people start tripping over them."
“Oh, sure.” Quatre quickly moved over towards the bags and picked up one of them. “Let me help you. I think you’ll like my roommate. He’s very nice, if a little straightforward.”
"Straightforward is good." Duo grabbed the other bag. "Not always the easiest to live with. You're very brave."
Quatre huffed a quiet laugh and shook his head. “No, living with him doesn’t require any bravery. You just have to know that he doesn’t mean anything negative by it. Come on, I’ll show you over.”
He turned and started to make his way out of the room.
Duo followed, keeping quiet because there was simply too much to take in as they traveled through the mansion. They'd gotten a bit of a glimpse at it earlier, but food and rest had been the top priority and it was only now that Duo was getting a hint at what this place might offer. It felt oppulant, at least to them. Of course, they'd spent half their lives in an underfunded orphanage that always seemed to be on the verge of crumbling. Had crumbled by now. How it could it still be standing without Father Maxwell and Sister Helen to hold it together?
Ugh, maybe needed more sleep. Duo's mood always threatened to dive when they'd gone too long without rest in their own body. More sleep as soon as possible then - maybe he borrow Quatre's bed for a bit.
Quatre lead to way to his room, giving a small knock on the door to signal to Trowa that he was there and would be coming in. He opened the door and glanced in, smiling when he saw the other boy. “Trowa? I have someone you should meet.”
He opened the door wider so that Dup could walk in ahead of him, moving in and closing it once Duo was inside. “Meet Duo. He has no room right now, so I offered my side of the room until they find a place for him.”
He hoped that wouldn’t upset his roommate since he hadn’t asked first, which now that he thought about it was a bad misstep, but he had already offered.
Trowa was settled cross-legged on his own bed, frowning at a new piece of sheet music. He glanced up at the new boy, who looked as if he'd dressed in a hurricane, and nodded a welcome. Then he looked over to Quatre.
"So you'll be sleeping with me until then?"
Duo raised an eyebrow, wondering what might be going on between the two of them. It wasn't an issue, but it was interesting. "Really, there's no need. As long as I have a blanket and pillow, I'm fine with the floor.
Quatre felt like his heart was going to explode when Trowa offered that and quickly turned to Duo so his roommate wouldn’t see the flushing his face as he answered Duo. “No, it’s fine. You need good rest in an actual bed.”
When he felt his face was under control he turned to Trowa with a smile. “I have no problem with the floor for a night or two, besides us squished in a bed I don’t think you’d get much sleep.”
I know I wouldn’t.
Trowa frowned a little. "You won't get much sleep on the floor either. You can use my bed. It's fine."
Duo hadn't missed Quatre's blush. Well, maybe nothing was going on between them after all, but with one insisting and the other turning red, it only seemed to be a matter of time. Who was he to stand by and ignore the opportunity to help push things along a little? Duo smiled. "If I'm going to make you sleep on the floor, I might as well just go back to the couch. I think Trowa's got the right of this."
Quatre turned back to Duo a little wide eyed, wondering how this had turned on him so quickly. If he said no, then they would just go around again and then Duo would probably just end up back on the couch. He took a quiet deep breath and relented, giving a small shake of his head. “No, no. I offered so you should stay here, Trowa and I will share.”
Trowa nodded once; so far as he was concerned, it was settled. "Good."
And he turned back to his music.
Well, that was hardly worth the meddling, even as small as it had been. Duo dropped his bag beside the empty bed. "It should just be one night any way? I can get up early tomorrow and see who ever it is I need to see about getting my own bed."
“Yes, hopefully.” Quatre replied and moved to take a desk chair since both beds were taken. He sat in the chair, crossing his legs as he turned to face Duo with smile, worry about Trowa pushed aside for now. “So, where are you from, Duo?”
"The great city of San Salvador. Not my parents of course, but I was born and raised there." Raised was a bit of a stretch, but Duo saw no need to elaborate. "You?"
“Oh! I’ve never been, but it looks beautiful.” Quatre replied with a nod. “I was born in Almaty, Kazakstan, but we moved around a lot. Trowa,” He turned to look at his roommate when he said his name. “He is from Ingushetia, right?”
"That's where I was found," Trowa agreed. Apparently, there was going to be extended conversation, so he put his music aside. "Where I'm from is anyone's guess."
"Russia?" It had taken Duo a few moments to recall that, but geography was one of the subjects Father Maxwell had insisted Duo have a firm foundation in. "So I'm the closest thing to local in this room!"
“I guess that’s true.” Quatre smiled at Duo’s statement, shifting in his chair a bit. “How did you hear about this place? I only knew because I contacted Mr. Xavier myself, but it seems the more popular method is being found by him.”
He glanced over at Trowa for only a second before looking back at Duo.
"You mean the voice-in-my-head thing? Yes, that's how I found out." It hadn't been the most welcome of invitations at first with Duo's world having crumbled around them, but it had worked. "Very strange stuff."
“Mmm.” Quatre agreed with a nod of his head, still unsure as to how Mr. Xavier was able to accomplish it, but that was questions for another day. “Could I ask what your mutation is?”
"You can, but I'll assume this is quid pro quo and you'll tell me yours?" Quatre wasn't like the angel boy after all. Wings were rather obvious; whatever this boy could do wasn't. "I possess people, take them over."
Quatre’s eyes widened at Duo’s words, the idea of being possessed had been something he only thought happened in horror stories. “That is quite the power. Just by thinking it or-?” He shook his head a bit. “I’m sorry, I didn’t answer you. I’m an empath, I can feel other’s emotions and influence them by touching skin to skin.”
Trowa looked up when he sensed expectant eyes on him.
"I can communicate with animals," he supplied. "And I have some enhanced senses."
Duo looked from Quatre to Trowa, their smile growing. "That is amazing. I feel like I've stepped into a fantasy book." Then they looked back to Quatre to answer his question. "I go inside them, step into them? Um, mezclo??Combino? There was a good word for it, but I can't remember it right now."
"'Phase'," Trowa supplied. "One of our classmates does something similar; she walks through things."
"Through anything? Like a ghost?" Duo's eyes widened.
Quatre smiled and nodded. “Yeah, at least I believe so. I haven’t of anything she can’t go through.”
"Phase," Duo repeated. "I'll have to meet her. I don't exactly go through people, but it would still be interesting to talk to her."
“So, you go into people?” Quatre asked gently, hoping his questioning wasn’t going to offend Duo. “And you can control them? Just like that?”
Duo nodded. "Their bodies at least. I'm not privy to their thoughts and such, which as far as I'm concerned is a good thing."
“Wow. Is there a time limit or can it just be...forever?” Quatre asked, wondering how it would feel to be in someone else’s body instead of his own.
"I'm only 15. I haven't been able to test 'forever' yet, but the longest I've stayed with someone is a few days. I really don't think I'd like to stay much longer." Duo yawned, smiled to cover it up, and looked over to Trowa. "He's very curious, isn't he?"
"He likes everyone, until he gets to know them better," Trowa offered, leaning back on his hands. "And most times, even then. You could do far worse than have Quatre as your friend. Which he will be, given a chance."
Quatre turned from Duo to look at Trowa with a raised eyebrow, but the amused twist of his lips showed he wasn’t actually annoyed. “I am here you know.”
"I know. But he asked about you. I offered my expertise."
At that Quatre couldn’t help but laugh, shaking his head. “Good to know you’re an expert when it comes to me.” He turned back to Duo with a happy smile. “I’ll stop with the questions then. I think you’ll like it here, everyone is very nice.”
Almost everyone.
As if reading Quatre's mind, Trowa voiced the unspoken thought.
"Not everyone. But most will be civil on a first meeting."
"That's as much as I hope for. Anything else, like how kind you two have been, is a bonus."
“It will be fine.” Quatre assured. “Do you have your class schedule yet? Though, if you don’t even have a room, I’d be surprised if you did.”
"I'll get that tomorrow. I arrived, I was given a tour by a ridiculously good-looking angel, and then I slept." The rest could all be handled when they had a little more rest. Some gentle introductory chit-chat was all Duo had in them right now.
“Ah, you’ve met Warren.” Quatre turned in his chair slightly to face more towards his desk. “He is very nice. Well, until they give you a bed of your own, enjoy. Have you eaten yet?”
He paused at then looked over at Trowa. “Have you?”
"I have," answered Duo. "It was the first thing I did when I arrived, but if you two want to go don't feel like you're abandoning me. I'll just get some more rest."
Trowa looked at the clock. "Not recently. But I'll eat before I go on patrol."
“Well, if neither of you wish to eat, then I will head down by myself.” Quatre tapped his knee with his hand and stood up. “It was nice to meet you, Duo. I’d say I hope to talk to you again soon, but you’ll be sleeping here so I know I will.”
"Just one night," promised Duo. They yawned again. The nap had helped, but they were going to need more than a few hours of sleep to catch up on the weeks they'd spent in the bodies of others. "I'll sort everything out tomorrow so that I'm out of your way."
“I hope you get some good rest and don’t worry about being in our way.” Quatre replied and moved to grab his phone, checking the time before sliding it into his pocket. “Trowa, what time are you going on patrol?”
"Around 1600, after classes," Trowa said. "Tessa will probably be with me. It will just be a standard review of the perimeter."
"A 'standard view of the perimeter'. That sounds very serious." Duo pulled off their boots, and laid down on the bed. "That sounds very serious for a school."
"We're an unusual school," Trowa pointed out. "And mutants have enemies."
"So I've heard." Warren had given them an outline of current troubles here, but Duo hadn't managed to ingest it all yet. It felt abstract compared to the more immediate dangers they'd faced in the last couple of months.
Quatre grew quiet at Trowa and Duo’s exchange, the ever present threat against mutants was something that he tried not to think about for too long.
“Unfortunately.” He muttered quietly, taking in a deep breath before letting it out to dismiss the frightening thoughts and turned to look at Trowa. “Tell Tessa I said hi for me please? I feel like I haven’t seen her in awhile.”
"I will." Trowa put his flute away and stood. "I think I will go with you to the cafeteria, though. If Duo is going to rest here, I don't believe my flute playing will do him much good."
The thought alone with Trowa made Quatre feel a mix of happy and anxious, putting on a smile as he nodded. “Of course. Unless you find flute music relaxing.” He half-heartedly joked looking at Duo.
"I'm not sure, but I think I could probably sleep through it right now." Duo pulled the top blanket over themself and watched them leave before closing their eyes. This would be the first time they slept in a bed as themself for a long time, and Quatre could probably send a marching band through it in about 15 minutes and Duo wouldn't wake.
