Inu-Yasha and Quatre talk about the joining Xavier's group and Inu-Yasha finally manages to get on Quatre's nerves.

Quatre bit at his bottom lip as he graded the last practice test he had given Inu-Yasha, it looking like the other hadn't even tried since most of the questions were left blank. "Did you not understand the test?"

He had gone over the material with Inu-Yasha twice, but he hadn't been too sure of the boy had even been paying attention.
Still staring out the window and basically willing time to pass faster, Inu-yasha didn’t bother turning to look at Quatre. “I dunno, something like that,” he replied gruffly. Failing tests? That was something he was totally used to. It wasn’t like he tried very hard - what would the be the point?

Quatre turned to frown at the white-haired boy next to him, the tone in his voice making it obvious that he didn't care at all if he passed or failed. "Were you even trying? More than half of these answers are blank. When we went over them in review you seemed to know it."

Granted, Quatre had spent thirty minutes just trying to convince Inu-Yasha to review, but he had thought the other had it.

Inu-yasha turned to glare at the paper in question. It’d be crumpled and shredded by now if it was in his hands, but Quatre hadn’t given it back. “It all gets jumbled, an’ I don’t get what the stupid questions want. I was gonna fail it anyway,” he pointed out, “so what’s it matter?”

"It gets jumbled." Quatre repeated quietly to himself. "Did you feel stressed while taking it? I'm sure the teachers would allow you more time if we asked and it does matter. Remember when we talked about you doing something after school?"

He kept his voice soft and gentle, making sure to let Inu-Yasha know he wasn't irritated or upset.

Inu-yasha snorted. "Just pissed off." More time on tests? Kami-sama, that'd just make it worse - like he needed more time to prove how stupid he was. "And yeah, what about it?"

Quatre hummed to himself as he tried to figure out what was giving Inu-Yasha the hardest time when it came to tests. "Well, I was wondering if you were thinking of joining the professor's group? Maybe it would turn into a long-term thing, but I'm pretty sure you would have to at least pass your classes first."

Brow furrowing, Inu-yasha asked skeptically, "What, the old guy's fighting squad?"

Quatre didn't bother trying to correct Inu-Yasha's phrasing of it and nodded with a small smile. "Yeah. I think you would like it. I was thinking of joining, so we could spend more time together if you joined as well."

He wasn't sure if Inu-Yasha even liked him, but he could try.

That startled Inu-yasha. "You?" he demanded, gaping. Was the kid out of his damn mind? "Are you stupid or just crazy?! The hell are you gonna do in a fight?"

Quatre pursed his lips a little at Inu-Yasha's disbelief, but didn't let it really bother him and shrugged. "I'm not completely defenseless. My body guard taught me a few things in self-defense and I could use my powers."

He didn't really want to, but he could do damage if he wished.

Inu-yasha snorted. "Use your powers how?" The kid clearly didn't have any strength or speed to speak of, though Inu-yasha didn't actually know what his powers were... but it'd have to be something really good to give him any kind of edge in a fight.

Quatre tugged at his gloves a little uneasily, clearing his throat as he tried to think of the best way to explain it. "I can manipulate others and how they feel. So, if someone is feeling hostile towards me I could make them feel more inclined not to attack me or if wanted to go further...help me."

"But you have to touch them?" Inu-yasha was eyeing Quatre's bared hand, mostly with curiosity. It was strange to see the kid without gloves, but he'd just assumed that was a weird rich-kid thing.

"Well, yes. I have to be able touch another person's skin in order for my powers to work." For the first time ever Quatre felt the need to defend his powers, but that was silly. He knew what he was capable of and that was all the mattered.

"So what're you gonna do," Inu-yasha asked skeptically, "hope they hold your hand before taking you out?"

"No." Quatre replied slowly. "I was thinking I would train in order to be able to get close enough."

He thought of Trowa and Tessa's agreement to teach him how to use a fire arm, but that seemed like a bit much for right now.

Inu-yasha was looking at Quatre like he was the stupid one here. "You're no fighter," he said dismissively, "you'll get your ass handed to you. Hell, you'll get yourself killed. What good'll that do??"

Quatre frowned at those words. "Why it's true that I would rather use words than violence, that doesn't mean that I can't defend myself. Why do you automatically assume I'm completely useless?"

“‘Cause I could throw you through that window without breaking a sweat!” Inu-yasha snapped back at him, jerking his chin toward the window on the other side of the room. “Look at you, you’re weak! No power, no resistance— the hell do you think you’ll be able to do??”

Quatre bit back the negative words that wanted to come out of his mouth at that moment and slowly exhaled through his mouth before replying. "That is what training is for. No one is born a fighter, they are made and molded into one. I would learn." He pursed his lips a little. "Even if I'm weak now, no one knows what the future holds."

“You got some kinda death wish?!” Inu-yasha demanded gruffly. “Or do you just think this is some kinda game? Have you ever even been hit?”

Quatre thought of the men who had taken him hostage, how he had been back-handed and pushed around. He shifted uncomfortably at the memory of their hate pounding in his head and picked at a cuticle. "I have, and it was not enjoyable, but if I can learn how to prevent it wouldn't that be for the best?"

That pulled Inu-yasha up short momentarily. He hadn't expected that answer. "Keh. Obviously. So why would you put yourself on some kinda fighting squad?"

Quatre didn't know how else to explain his choice, he had tried to tell Inu-Yasha some of his more physical reasoning, but that didn't seem to make a difference in the other's opinion. "I also would like to help with showing people that mutants aren't bad."

"And you think fighting's the way to do that?" Inu-yasha asked, dumbfounded. "Since when?" Usually Quatre was telling him violence wasn't the way or whatever.

This conversation was actually making Quatre want to pull on his hair, which was something he hadn't experienced in a long time so credit to Inu-Yasha. "No. No. If things can be solved without fighting that would be for the best, but on the chance that it wouldn't be then I would like to be prepared for it. Does that make sense? Just because I believe in pacifism, does not mean everyone else does."

Inu-yasha stared at the blond boy for a long moment, seriously considering it.

Then he shook his head. “Nope. I don’t get it.”

Quatre sighed quietly, not sure if they would get anywhere even if he tried to start again from the top. He bit at his bottom lip and wondered if maybe it was a bit of a foolish thing to do, since according to others it didn't seem like the right fit. "Never mind," Quatre continued a little quietly. "We should focus back on studies anyway, I don't think we have too much time left anyway."

"Guys like me, we fight," Inu-yasha said, not ready to let it go yet.

Quatre swallowed loudly, shifting in his seat as he could feel the very long line of his temper slowly starting to reach its end. "Yes, I understand. You have made that clear, Inu-Yasha."

Inu-yasha didn't think Quatre understood at all, and he frowned. "So why would you want that?"

Quatre took a moment to think about his answer, he could be truthful and then maybe get into another debate with the other or he could lie. "Because I'm tired of watching other mutants be hurt or condemned for just being genetically different. I want to help and that seems like the best option."

“...but won’t you just be a mutant getting hurt?” Inu-yasha was frowning intensely. Shit, this was more confusing than one of those wordy math problems.

Quatre opened his mouth and then shut it again, trying to figure out the best way to talk about this without going in a circle again. "If I get hurt fighting for a better cause, then I would see it as worth it."

"Huh." Inu-yasha didn't get it, at all. Still. In fact, he was even more convinced there were serious flaws in the guy's logic. "Well, if you wanna be a punching bag, I'm not gonna stop ya."

Quatre smiled a little bit at that, the frustration he had felt towards the other falling away when Inu-Yasha relented. "Thank you." He said quietly. "You still haven't answered my original question. Would you think of joining?"

It was the kind of smile that took Inu-yasha by surprise, and left him blushing a little even though he had no friggin’ idea why. Argh, whatever. “Why would I?”

"Because," Quatre replied, good mood slowly returning. "Like you said, you are a fighter and the team needs that. Plus, you would get the benefit of telling me you told me so when I get hit for the first time."

Inu-yasha snorted. "I don't fight for anyone else."

“Well,” Quatre started slowly. “It could be a way to practice your fighting without getting in trouble. Fighting in the Danger Room can only go so far.”

He wasn't sure on that, he had never even been to the room yet, but it seemed like a good way to get Inu-Yasha to consider it.

That gave Inu-yasha pause, and he frowned. That was why he was here. "Think it'd help me get stronger?"

Quatre couldn’t help the small satisfied smile that tugged at his lips when it seemed that worked. “I for sure think it would help you get stronger. The more you work on it the better you become after all, right?”

The wheels were (slowly) turning in Inu-yasha's head. "S'pose I'd get to do some actual fighting..."

“You would.” He agreed with a small nod. “I think it would be very beneficial.”

Inu-yasha frowned. "...maybe."

“Well,” Quatre started, turning a soft smile on the other. “If you do decide to join, let me know.”

Inu-yasha narrowed his eyes at his tutor, confused. "Why're you smiling like that?"

“Because, you made me happy.” Quatre answered simply, his smile growing a touch and pushed the paper they had been working on to the middle between them. “Now, I think I have an idea for helping you with tests.”
