Jean and Laura (backdated)

Laura decides to apologize to Jean, and winds up with an unexpected invitation.

Laura sat cross-legged on the floor in the library, hidden in the far back behind the map section where hardly anyone went. She pulled her hair over one shoulder and tugged at it as she frowned down at the math book she was studying, not liking how the book explained the problem.

She pulled her notebook closer and was ready to practice when she caught the scent of someone familar. Laura glanced up, even though she knew she would not be able to see Jean’s familar red hair through aisles of books and thought for a second why she would want to. Her last meeting with the telepath had not gone well, Jean had left immediately because of something Laura had said and they had not spoken since.

Laura sighed softly at the twinge of guilt she felt, disliking how it was making her feel the need to apologize and stood up. She left her book and notebook where they were as she sought out the other girl, following her scent until she was in front of her. “Hello, Jean.”

Jean looked up and offered her a smile. "Hi, Laura. What's up?"

Jean was smiling, so that meant that she was not upset with Laura, correct? Or maybe she was only smiling because she disliked conflict. People were very confusing and Laura pressed her lips together tightly as she thought of the best strategy for apologizing. “I was wondering if I could offer you an...apology.”

There she had said it.

Jean blinked a moment, trying to think of what Laura was referring to and coming up blank.

"I'm sorry, but I can't think why you would need to."

Laura bit the inside of her cheek as she watched Jean, had the girl not been as offended or upset as she had thought? Maybe it had been such an insignificant thing that Jean had forgotten almost immediately. Either way, Laura has come to make the effort and she would see it through till the end. “For our last meeting. It seemed as if I had said something that bothered you. You left very quickly.”

"Oh." Jean nodded as the reminder pulled the memory to the surface of her mind. "Talking about certain aspects of my past does bother me," she said, "but I didn't hold it against you. You weren't trying to be mean or anything. But thank you. For the apology."

Laura blink and had to take a moment because this was all going easier than she thought it would. Most media portrayed teenage girls as manipulative harpies, so she had gone into this expecting a little bit of that, but Jean showed none of it. It was uncomfortable to be thrown off, but she was glad for it. “Good. I mean, you’re welcome.”

She gave a small uncertain nod and turned away.

Jean watched her turn away. "Was there anything else you wanted?"

Laura hesitated, looking over her shoulder back at Jean. “No? I came to apologize and you accepted it. I did not have any more pressing matters to discuss.”

She turned around to face the redhead again. “Did you want me to?”

"Well, I did have a question for you," Jean admitted. "I saw some of the animal carvings you made, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in doing a piece for an art exhibition. Teddy and I were thinking of organizing one for the spring."

“A piece?” She repeated quietly, trying to think back to anything she has read about art and exhibits. “I am not a real artist. I only looked up photos and used that as a base for the animals, altering a few things if I wanted something different.”

"That doesn't make a difference," Jean protested. "Lots of artists use references."

Laura hummed quietly at Jean’s words and shrugged her shoulders a bit. “I would need to have it ready by spring? Is there a theme to the exhibit I would need to follow?”

Jean shook her head. "Not that we've decided. I think we're probably just going to let everyone go with what they think best represents them."

Laura tried to think about what best represented her, but she could not come up with anything really on the spot, so instead she just nodded. “Yes, I would like to try. You will let me know once things have been settled? Times, due dates and such?”

Jean nodded, smiling brightly. "We'll post it on the public forums as soon as we have something nailed down. Thanks, Laura!"

“You are welcome.” She replied quietly, pleased that this interaction had gone better than the last. “Are you doing anything for it? The show? You take pictures, yes?”

Jean nodded. "I'll have to ask permission from the students if I'm going to display any portraits. And I have a few pieces that aren't on the school grounds. But I do suspect a lot of what I wind up showing will be dealing with this place."

“That seems perfect for the show to be here then.” She did not know if Jean was even good at the art, but if her work was positive sort than it could help others see the good in the school.
