Warren and Billy Backdated

Warren takes Billy out for his first true flying lesson outside.

Billy fussed with the draw string of his track pants, wondering if he was dressed appropriately for flying with his workout clothes. He wasn't really sure if flying was considered working out or just a normal activity. Ugh, when did his life get this complicated?

He shrugged and gave up, tugging the hem of his sweatshirt further down and glancing at the time in his phone. Alright, so Warren would be here soon and they would have their first flying lesson in the woods. Hopefully, the school wouldn't have to send his parents a letter saying, 'Our condolences on your son going splat in the forest'.

Warren touched down a few moments later, taking a few steps to slow down and then shaking out his wings. He had on an unfortunate t-shirt--way overpriced but soft as alpaca wool--and one of his five million pairs of thousand-dollar jeans, but still no shoes. Cold didn't bother him too much, thankfully, and this summer was lingering forever. "Hey, man. Ready to fly?"

"If you mean ready to probably die, yeah of course, why not?" Billy joked, even though in his head he was mentally screaming at himself for telling Warren his true feelings in joke form. He groaned and tugged on a chunk of his hair at he looked up at the tall trees. "Okay. So, how should we do this?"

Warren clapped Billy on one shoulder. "I promise not to let you die.

"So, you can either start from up high--which is what I did--or you can try and levitate slowly--which might make more sense in terms of learning control early on. What feels best to you?"

"Ha. I think we're going to try slow, cause unlike you I'm not that brave. Okay, let me just..." Billy clenched his firsts and focused on lifting himself up, grinning a little when he felt his feet leave the ground.

Admittedly, Warren was a little out of his depth when it came to non-winged fliers, but... this was awesome. "That looks so cool."

Billy took a deep breath in and let it out slowly as he body started to glow a brighter blue and he rose two more feet. "Okay, so here is where I start to get nervous. You swear you're going to catch me if I short out?"

"Come on, would a guy with wings this white and fluffy be a liar?" Warren grinned and held out his hands. "Hang on at first if it helps--but I swear, I'll catch you."

"Lucifer was just as pretty with white fluffy wings, buddy." Billy joked, but reached out his hands and took hold of Warren's as he tried rising a little higher. He did his best not to focus on the ground that was slowly getting further from his feet, looking up towards the very blue sky instead. "Tessa showed me these like bouncy house air mats in the Danger Room. I've been trying on that, but I figured I should get some real outside practice too."

That's right. Don't focus on what's below.

Warren chuckled at the Lucifer crack. "That should be my superhero name. Seriously, though, once you get high enough that you could actually get hurt, I'll be up there with you." He gave Billy's hands a squeeze.
He felt like a kindergartner, but the hand squeeze did help boost his confidence a little and he slowly went a little higher until he was at least twenty feet from the ground. "Phew. Okay. Not so bad. I guess I should also work on moving around instead of just up..."

He didn't quite remember how he did it with Tessa, but he tried to think about just moving, getting over to where he wanted. He slowly pulled Warren along with him over towards a large pine.

"All aboard the slow-ass express." He joked, reaching out to touch the pine needles.

"This is crazy!" Warren had never been off the ground by anyone's power but his own, so the levitation was... disorienting. But also for the best, since trying to fly this slow and hover would've been hard work this close to the ground. "You're killing it, dude--slow is just fine."

"Yeah, slow it will be for a while. I once tried to float in my backyard before I came here, I took off to fast and ended up higher than I wanted. Thank God I was next to a tree." Billy closed his eyes and the glow around his body grew brighter as they went higher, the tips of the pine tree just brushing the bottoms of their feet.

He let go of one of Warren's hand and pulled them to the side where there were less trees below them. Billy let his eyes open and glanced down with a quiet gulp. "Wow...this is high."

"Not for you and me, it's not." Warren tried to sound even more confident than he felt of that, which was saying a lot. Billy needed some boosting in that department, and Warren was just the guy. He had plenty to go around. "Slow is fine, but you've got me here now, so don't worry about pushing it a little."
Billy gave Warren a questioning look before nodding.

"Okay, I'm going to stop carrying you now, so be warned." Billy focused on only himself, the pull of magic moving away from Warren completely and boosting Billy much higher and at speed he had no real control of. He stopped when he was about a hundred feet from the ground and gaped at being able to see most of the woods and the mansion. "Wow..."

"Feel that breeze? It's fresher up here, I swear." Warren had found a current and was able, for the most part, to keep himself aloft by coasting on it. He dipped down and then up more than Billy, but it was a good workout. "Nothing like this view!"

Once Billy was able to keep himself level, his feet no longer trying to sabotage him by floating higher than his head, Billy closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The air was so clean and cold that it almost hurt if he took to deep a breath, making him grin as he opened his eyes back up. "Okay. This beats the Danger Room. By like a lot."

He glanced up to see Warren and smiled, making himself rise a little higher to meet the other, feeling safer cause Warren was experienced. Warren would catch him if something happened. "So, is flying like your favorite thing?"

Warren couldn't help being charmed by the experiences flashing their way across Billy's face just then. He was still working hard, but in a good way, and watched with a smile. "Oh yeah. By far and away. I mean, there are some other things that can come close, but--you know." His expression made it clear this was innuendo. "Not in a sustained way. Not like flying."

Billy turned to look at Warren with a smirk, a slight flush coming to his cheeks, but not nearly as bad as when he'd first met the guy. Thank god, he was getting use to Warren. "Well," he replied and did his best to do a weird floaty backflip, which turned out okay if not a little slow. "I wouldn't know about that, so this is the best thing ever. I never want to come down."

Warren chuckled at the slow mo flip and clapped for it, his wings keeping him aloft, so he bobbed a little in the air. "Even with what I do know about it, I feel the same. Coming down is for chumps. 100%. You're doing great, by the way. Look at you, all acrobatic and stuff."

Billy laughed, getting himself back into an upright position and turning the best he could towards Warren. "Yeah, I guess floating in uncoordinated circles count as acrobat stuff. Hey, if this whole school thing doesn't work, maybe I could join the circus or something...just gotta hide the glow stick thing."

He wiggles his phone out of his pocket and waved the other over. "Wanna take a selfie that I can send to my mom and cause her to have a heart attack with? I can try holding you again if you have trouble staying still."

“Oh, for sure,” Warren said with a grin. For one, he doubted Billy’s mom would recognize him, and even if she did, he doubted she’d run to the National Enquirer. He flapped nearer and held out a hand—Billy would have to levitate him again to keep them even long enough—or jump into his arms.
Billy focused, and it was weird being able to feel his power wrap around Warren, almost like a piece of himself moving over the other. Warren's body became outlined in blue like his own and seeing it made him feel like he had a better grasp.

"Okay...here. You take the camera." He instructed as he placed the camera in Warren's hand. He moved next to Warren's side and hoped he didn't look like he was trying to concentrate too hard. "Alright, let's do this."

Warren was a consummate selfie-taker, obviously, so he had no trouble with this one. It was weird to be in the air and not flap or coast, but also kind of fun. Dangerous-fun.

Warren slung an arm over Billy's shoulders and winked at the camera. "Say hi, Mom!"

Billy laughed, moving to smile all before he felt that familiar shift in his power and suddenly nothing was holding them up. Falling had weirdly become a sensation he had almost gotten used to now, the stomach dropping feeling as he headed towards the ground.

It didn't even register in his mind to scream.

"Whoa!" Warren's first reaction was to laugh, but he was already stuffing Billy's phone--still on camera mode--into his pocket. He grabbed Billy's nearest arm and his wings went out on instinct. Then he swung down so he wouldn't jerk the arm out of its socket and scooped Billy up with his free arm, holding him tight against his chest--only about fifteen feet off the ground. "Gotcha!"

He beat his wings hard and they went up again.

Going from a free fall one second to being up against Warren and going higher in the sky the next was something else, his mind having to catch up with the change. He let out a slow breath through his mouth, giving a weak laugh and patting Warren on the bicep. "Okay, so I'll be honest, I wasn't a hundred percent sure on your speed, but that was a good save."

"I was enjoying the drop," Warren said with a wink. With his usual landing grace, he lowered them again, this time controlled and easy. "But I do have some hero practice under my Versace couture belt, you know."

Billy let out a laugh, feeling a little better when he felt solid ground under his feet, pulling away from Warren to look at it. "Well, I have to say, it's quite an honor to saved by Central Parks own Avenging Angel."

"I gotta work on my hero pose for when people say shit like that," Warren said with his biggest and (he thought) most charming grin. "But you did great, seriously. I mean, this is why you brought me along, right? To hero it up?"

"Hero it up is one way to put it." Billy joked and glanced up to see just how high they had been. "Playing catch the malfunctioning mutant is another, but thanks. I think that's the highest I've ever been sans plane. What's the higher you've gone?"

"The air starts to get uncomfortably thin around, like... I guess 9k meters or so? I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that's the highest I've gone. I could've gone farther--my lungs are adapted to that kind of stuff--but I just figured, you know. Why?" Warren hadn't done exact measurements, but with his eyes, he could gauge things and... yeah.

"Wow, that's pretty impressive." Billy remarked and looked up at the blue sky dotted with white wisps. He wondered if he could do something with his magic to make breathing easier up high or if that was even possible. There was such a thing as science after all, magic could change everything right? "My goal is to be able to learn how to be mobile in the air. I'm jealous of all you fliers soaring like it's as easy as breathing."

"It was awkward at first, believe me," Warren said with a wry smile. "I must've looked like I just fell out of a nest. If the building hadn't been on fire, who knows how long it would've taken me to actually try it."

"Well, thank goodness for the fire and your heroics. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have my charming flying instructor with me today." Billy smiled and reached out to pat Warren on the shoulder. "Seriously, thanks for helping."

"Any time. I mean, like I need an excuse to fly?" Warren winked. "And seriously, you got this."
"Mmmm." Billy hummed with a smile. "I'm glad someone has faith in me. Can we try again?"

Warren clapped once, then held out his hand. "You kidding? We better try again. We're just getting started."
